ROAD TRIP OFF THE RAILS! - Things Go A Little Sideways | Monument Valley to Colorado

We've explored the Monument Valley area and head off to make our way towards Colorado. Unfortunately, fortune had its own mind and we had to change plans here and there. Get a look how the Cactus Atlas adapts and works behind the scenes.
We're setting off and start by heading to the River House Ruins for some interesting and varied history. Unfortunately, water was flowing through a wash and passing through was questionable without a guide or some help.
Abandoning that idea, we head off north towards Moab where a second dilemma still awaits to be solved. Luckily on the way, an opportunity presents itself for making up for lost content - Hovenweep National Monument! We've wanted to film here for some time so today is the day! Keep an eye out for that video in the future.
After a stop at Hovenweep, we continue on towards Moab weaving between Utah and Colorado while the landscape changes from red rock, to flat land and farms, back to red rocks. We check into our hotel and set off to solve a power issue. Cameras need to be kept topped up on this week long road trip!
The next morning, we fuel up with some coffee and continue north with Colorado National Monument as the goal. But not before a quick stroll over the Colorado River on a bridge in Lions Park. A great way to wake up!
Music guides our way and eventually we reach Fruta, check into our campground, film some more content before taking in some evening light over Otto's Trail at Colorado National Monument and getting rest for the rest of the trip!

I've been holding my breath more often since you got that new truck Glenn. So very glad you didn't drive over those river crossings. But I'm a 69 year old retired female, lol. I really feel like we are riding along with you in the passenger seat. You have been a little more "chatty" these past few videos. Thank you both for the huge amount of time you put into your content. 😊

Thank you so very much! Thankfully Glenn isn't too much of a risk taker with the truck. 👍 He's definitely a chatty guy and I know talking to everyone via video keeps him sane on longer trips. I've been trying to balance the adventure and scenery here and there with a bit more of a personal touch. 😅

While I rarely comment, I greatly enjoy all of the content you put out on KZread. I'm really looking forward to your Hovenweep video. I visited 25 national parks and monuments over 10 weeks last summer, and always surprise people when I place Hovenweep near the top of my list of favorites. I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed it, to the point where I was sad I had only allocated a few hours to it. There's so many other places to see, but I definitely hope to get back there some day. Anyway, I really enjoyed watching this. Thanks for all the informative content you put out!

We had a good bit of snow and rain in Arizona too. I'm STILL getting flood watch notifications on my weather app here and there so I can only imagine what Utah has been experiencing with the snow melt. Wish the tent bit a bit better lit in daylight but I know Glenn had an extremely busy day filming multiple episodes. 😅

Getting stuck in one of those washes wouldn't be fun. A quick story I have, is in 2020 no one was renting cars so the rental companies had some good deals. I decided I'd rent a car with 4 wheel drive to go film a video out in the desert. I get to the rental place and they say "we upgraded you to a Mercedes" and I was like "I'm not sure you want to do that." I ended up taking it, began this long dirt road into the desert, about 15 miles or so in there is a chain across the road with a sign saying the Anza Borrego Desert Park was closed because of the pandemic. I ended up going somewhere else and doing a different video. A great reason you should never buy a used rental though.

  • @CactusAtlas

Ah yes. We're familiar with those rental days a couple years back as well. Both our cars at the time were small two door vehicles not capable of carrying much. Definitely had an experience or two taking a rental in what turned out to be some questionable places. 😂

There is never a bad time for Iron Maiden on any road trip. (80s Maiden, specifically). I am, however, quite amused at you not quite realizing you were at the Colorado River, though. Incidentally, on a future trip, you should keep following that state highway along the Colorado River. It'll eventually lead you back to I-70 but it's incredibly beautiful and fun to drive.

When traveling alone you really have to be good at risk assessment. Many of the areas in southern Utah have no cell signal so if you get stuck you only have yourself to rely on. Which is why you should always take gallons of water and a weeks worth of food. I got stuck in the snow recently in Northern Arizona. There was no one around. Fortunately I had a shovel and kitty litter. Took awhile but dug myself out. Just gotta keep a cool head and have heaps of patience. Try to prepare for all scenarios. Shovels, traction boards, tire repair kit, inflator, straps, snow chains, tools.

You want stories? I got stories! lol I think I may have already commented about it but I'll keep it simple...I went on major roadtrips...one to Utah from Phoenix and one from Phoenix, to Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, LA and San Francisco...on BOTH of these trips, at the end, my cars broke down on me! And BOTH times it was something major, couldn't afford to fix. I hope it's not God's way of telling me to stop taking major trips because I want to possibly do van life or at least part-time van trips. As a fellow creator, I have trouble actually being on camera and I think that's why my channel hasn't grown more, but I just am NOT COMFORTABLE AT ALL being on camera! I'm not comfortable w/my weight and I'm not funny or anything...but one day...I think I'm just gonna have to try and see how it goes...I've tried a couple of times and I just don't even know what to say sometimes! lol I just love taking photos and making videos with music that tell a story of my trip...no one needs to see me...I'm not the center of the universe! lol (not saying others feel that way)

I've always hated photos taken or video. I feel awkward, I've no idea what to say. I tried a couple times but it's just not natural at all. 🤣 I suppose with practice it might get easier? As for the broken down cars... DANG. That's some craziness. I'd be taking my vehicle in beforehand and watch an inspection if I could just to make sure with that kind of luck. Thank you for posting these videos! That part of our USA is gorgeous, I love going over to Utah and exploring. Just got back from the San Rafael Swell area just north of I-70 and west of Green River! Anyway, I too stay in a ground tent. I also have found that the ground almost everywhere is too hard to stake through, so I bring a little help for that. I bought 4 each 8 to 10 Inch Lag Bolts from a hardware store. Mine are 1/2" with 3/4" hex nut on top. I use a 3/8" Battery Powered Impact Driver with 3/4" socket to turn these lag bolts. I also use 4 each 3" Flat Washers on these lag bolts. Then I use the Impact driver to screw into the soil/rocky ground to hold down the four corners of the tent! Use the Impact Driver to remove these Lag Bolts when tearing down my tent and camp area. Easy Peasy!!! Good luck with your adventure's and keep up the great videos!

If you had more road trip to post, I think you should have waited to post your Bradshaw adventure video. I kind feel like it was an interruption of the story.

Totally understand. We discussed whether to release it when we did. A lot of the trips we took in the past got split up as well as to not have things be too fatiguing or concentrated in one state or one subject matter (ghost towns vs scenic parks, etc). We know not every video will be someone's cup of tea subject-wise so we try to keep it varied. I'll keep your thoughts in mind in the future. Thanks for the feedback. 😊

I'm Glenn's wife. I'm 1/2 of this channel - I edit all the videos, respond to comments, and handle all the social media. Basically everything aside from filming and travel though I join in sometimes like our previous week's video. 😊👍
