York is the place where I was brought up and where I had my first experience in the world of radio at BBC Radio York, spent a lot of time sending American tourists in the wrong direction when they asked where something was. It was fun at the time and I was very young. I do however hope your visit is painless. Walk the walls it's free and visit the Sam Smiths pub by the river. It constantly floods - The Kings Arms. Enjoy.

When hiring a car in England, the damage you're liable for is always limited to a maximum excess amount. You can pay to reduce the excess, but you can't totally remove the insurance and be liable for everything, so that minimum insurance is always included in the price

Car insurance in Europe is always mandatory. What you may have declined in the past is what I think Americans call a 'damage waiver' where you can pay about £10 a day more to reduce the amount payable for damaging the car from (for example) £600 to £0 - that's optional. The car rental company usually have a damage deposit process, if you did not have a card they could accept where they could charge the deposit on collection and then refund it on return, they sometimes make you pay the extra damage waiver instead. Happened to me in Spain a couple of years ago.

Okay it's a little late for me to tell you now, certainly after the fact anyway. Motorway service stations are nice and all but they charge a premium because of their location. If you come off the motorway at a town or city you'll almost always find a supermarket within a mile or so of the junction where you can get more choice of food at regular prices. The motorway services tend to be advantageous in that they are on the motorway, often have a choice of fast food outlets and a communal sitting area. Also re:- Guinness. If you want to try something a little nostalgic. Try the Guinness Original XX, it's what Guinness used to be between 1821 and 1971 before to went over to a new recipe and then the widget draught variety. If you want something a little more refreshing try a Guinness Hop House 13 Lager of a Guinness Golden Ale, all the refreshment of a lager with the taste of a light golden ale.
