Road Test - Reich 1500kg CWC Caravan Weight Control Scales for 4WD, cars and trailers

Reich CWC (Caravan Weight Control).
Weight is the one of the major decision criteria of my 6 guiding principles to designing your ideal 4WD adventure vehicle.
So how are you going to measure the weight of your vehicle as you start to load it up with stuff. Going to the weigh station is an option, however, that can be a recurring cost and/or inconvenience. Having something small and convenient to use would be great. Well, the Reich CWC could be the answer and solution to this dilemma.
This video goes through some basic operations of the Reich CWC portable vehicle, caravan, trailer scales.
The capacity of the model tested is up to 1500kg per wheel.
Purchased online, via eBay for $350 AUD in August 2020.
www.ebay.com.au/itm/Reich-Car...
Conclusion, its accuracy is around +/- 3%. On a 3000kg vehicle, that is +/- 90kg. Something to consider, when trying to measure your total load carrying capacity is somewhere around 1000kg.
It’s a useful tool for me. I will continue to use it and recommend it, until I find something more accurate and just as convenient. How you found something else that works better. Let me know.

I live in the States and I just bought one of these. I had to buy it on eBay from everything caravans in Australia because no one sells them here. My primary use is for my RAM 2500 Diesel truck and Airstream trailer. I think it's a good "guide" to make sure you're not overloading things when you get ready for a trip. Going to the public scales (CAT Scales) here in Florida is not as convenient as I'd like, so this is a great thing to carry around. Looking at my truck, the CAT scales tell me the total weight was 8280 pounds and the Caravan scale gave me 8346 pounds (sorry, I need to work in English units or my brain shuts down. BTW, this unit only works in Kg so I have to do the conversion). So the Caravan scale reads 66 pounds higher, but I think I may have had more fuel than when I used the CAT scale. I also tried weighing myself by standing on it and it had me around 245 pounds when my bathroom scale says 200. It would not be surprising for this thing to be less accurate at lower ranges. One other thing. The instructions say to make sure both sides of the axel are at the same height. They suggest using boards cut to the height of the scale. I have not tried that. For me I think this is useful despite the small inaccuracies when compared to commercial scales. When I'm towing my trailer with a combined vehicle weight of over 15,000 pounds, one hundred pounds here or there doesn't mean much. I'm hoping this will let me consistently change the weight distribution hitch for a better ride. Better than just measuring fender heights.

Good summary. Yes, these scales are a good guide but not the most accurate. Putting a board the same thickness as the scales on the adjacent wheel improves accuracy.

Cheers for the review. I'm often taking vegetarian to the tip in my box trailer and it's only free under 300kg. Every time I'm over it costs me $80+ so this puppy will pay for itself in no time 👍

Good review, I have purchased one of these to weigh my new Defender. The results were between 200 and 300kg above the specifications and the attachments I have factored in on the vehicle. Even after taking the averages of a number of weighing's and being generous with the added attachment weights there is at the very least 180 kg unaccounted for. I have written to Landrover to find out where they have put the lead weights in my vehicle :) I may have to go and pay a weighing company to find the real weight as there are no free weigh stations here.

Yes, its probably worth paying a weigh station, it will also help calibrate the Reich to give you confidence in the readings.

I bought one of those and had a sleepless night after I weighed my van because it was way heavier than I expected so I took my van to a registerd weigh bridge and found the scales to be weighing 28% heavier than the weigh bridge, I sent them back.

Good review. What is the variability from reading to reading? If you weighed your vehicle 10 times, what is the variance of the measures. If I am concerned about weight distribution among 4 tires on a travel vice actual weight, will this provide a reasonable characterization of the weight on one tire relative to the other three. ccuracy and precision are two measures of observational error. Accuracy is how close a given set of measurements are to their true value, while precision is how close the measurements are to each other.

  • @Adventure8

The scales claim a 3% accuracy. They are also temperature sensitive. The scales like any tool need to be used in a skilled manner. If not, variances could be much higher 10%+. I found with practise, I got a consistent result within 5%. Hope that helps. Cheers

  • @Steven_Rowe
    @Steven_Rowe Жыл бұрын

+/-3% is not to bad. You mention the weighbridge had an accuracy of 30kg, well that is just weight, sure that would depend on what was on the weighbridge. In essence what is the accuracy of the weighbridge???? I hope how the Reich scales are like speedometers in cars, they normally say you are travelling slower than the Speedo reading.

Either your lucky or I am unlucky as my scales 1500kg are around 30% to 25% reading too high these are brand new I used exact weight to test 40Kg reads 52Kg its less inaccurate at 500kg plus but still no better than guessing. All the reviews I have seen on line say they are good, this is certainly contradictory to my experience. $450. not happy.
