Road salt is destroying our environment. Fish could help. | Monika Bleszynski | TEDxMileHigh

You’ve probably heard that plastics are bad. Only 5% of plastic is recycled. 12 million tons of plastic enter the oceans every year. And one study found microplastics in 100% of the water and marine organisms they tested. But materials scientist Monika Bleszynski believes plastic isn’t inherently bad. Instead, we can engineer plastics for good - plastics that are not only better for the environment but plastics that solve environmental problems. That was the idea behind her newest invention: an ecofriendly road salt alternative made of plastics inspired by fish!
Dr. Monika Bleszynski received her Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Denver, specializing in polymer materials. Her academic research focuses on assessing the effects of polymer and plastic damage on various products and the environment and finding sustainable polymer alternatives. She has taught classes at the University of Denver and recently joined a Silicon Valley-backed startup to develop solutions to address global plastic pollution and resource scarcity. In her spare time, she enjoys woodworking and traveling to far-flung locations with her husband. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I think an alternative tittle should be: "Plastics by itself are not a problem for the environment, it's the type of plastics":

2 question if everyone replaced road salt with your new anti-freeze wouldn't the warter end up get saturated with it like it dose. if your raw materails do come from oil or gas both where do you get the petrolium product from once drilling stops. i do not thin wee could possibly farm enough cod to get it naturally.

Having lived in Colorado were salt is necessary aspect of winter driving and that the chemical version used to melt the roads actually has a higher environmental damage than the salt. There's one thing people actually forget is that the road salt itself kills or stunts plants on the side of the road so that less chemicals and less mowing actually has to happen on the direct apron. Have a feeling that the speaker did not talk to a road maintenance person

Take a look at that one task which casts the tallest shadow on your to-do list. You know the one. That monster, that ghoul of a task that looms larger than life. Today is the day you turn the tables and shine a light on it. See that it was all just an optical illusion. Watch the shadow shrink. That one task is far less scary than fear would have you believe. It will be an ironic moment when you simply set your mind to accomplish it. And now... do it. Do that one thing today. Break the spell. Even if it’s just the first tiny steps - take them. You are more powerful than you know.

0:55 starting with a lie won't please me. The phrase implies that 95% of plastics go tp ocean. Nope. A huge part is burnt for heating buildings ( not recycled but reused ) and an other part is birried.
