Road Rash 32-Bit Review : 3DO, Playstation, Saturn & PC Versions!

Ойындар

I take a look at Road Rash 32-Bit, the next generation sequel that started on the 3DO Interactive Multi Player. It also came out on the Playstation, Saturn and PC, and I give a few opinions on all of them.

Episode Notes:
1. All captures from real hardware.
2. There is a Japanese version of the 3DO FZ-1 that has a native 240P switch on the back. It helps clean up the image for the S-Video output.
3. The 3DO original is still one of my favorite games of all time. While other versions improved on some things, it's still a blast to play.
4. The FMV of the available ports are all similar. The PS1 does full screen while the Saturn opts for a smaller window. They are have heavy compression artifacts.
5. There is a 2 player mode in Road Rash. Turning it on in the options allows you and a friend to take turns racing. It keeps track of your money, qualifications, and level as you trade off.
6. The PC version is easy to find online. It's considered abandonware.
7. The simple control scheme means it works great on pretty much any controller.
8. The L and R triggers allow you to lean the bike into turns. It helps negotiate the harder areas. I forgot to mention that in the video.

The PC version of Road Rash was my first job in the industry. My entire Summer in 1995 was spent creating a single 256-color super palette from the original 3DO 16-bit textures. I sat around and ran all the game's textures through Debabelizer on a Mac Quadra all day (it would literally take 8 hours). Then I'd look at every single texture using that new VGA palette and fix problematic textures by replacing colors that matched better with the originals. By the end of the project I could tell you the file name of each sprite that flew by you as you played the game. FUN FACT: The rider model they photographed for the player sprite is actually a woman. We had the source images from the photo session used to create the digitized sprites and could see who the real people were. Pretty neat. I'm in the credits as "Artist", but I don't know if that counts as art!

The 3DO had some incredible games in 1994. Many haven't aged well, but Shockwave, Road Rash, FIFA, Twisted, Need For Speed, and Wing Commander 3 were all incredible. Most were on other platforms, but the 3DO versions were the arguably best versions of these games (or were the first 32 bit versions). Way of the Warrior (by Naughty Dog!) was great as well, and though the controls were a bit stiff, it was hilarious and the digitized were the best on a home fighting game at the time.

I had this on Sega CD and Saturn (and 1-3 on genesis before it). I don't know if it's just some weird bias since it was the first version I played but I actually had more fun with the Sega CD version. Having the real music during the race helped A LOT and the fighting just seemed more fun. I liked the visuals on the saturn but it just seemed so sanitized and "different" than the other RR games. It's probably been 15 years since I've played any of them though.

Running over pedestrians cracked me up in this game, with some screaming "DUDE!". I think overall, this game perfectly captured the feel of Road Rash through both the characters and the tracks. It was also thanks to this game that I got into groups like Soundgarden and PAW; the FMV music videos which played in the game when left alone were amazing! Just too many memories. Without a doubt the best Road Rash game ever, no contest imo. Great video as always!

It's like he said, it fit like a glove. Everything just came together. Many a time, a storyline seems fake. They have a story for the sake of it. But the bike buying, upgrading to newer ones, getting wrecked, busted felt very real due to the artwork, music and videos. We feel like an actual protagonist of a story. And also, Mike's character just felt like the lead. Maybe because we start to play with him. It's like Ash cannot give up on Pikachu even though other better and stronger Pokemons might come his way.

He would bring the console "back home" when he would visit for a weekend and we played this and Solar Eclipse. The music was of course awesome, from a time when getting license to use it didn;t cost half a game's dev. budget. That "bonk" sound, I still here it lol.

Road Rash on the 3DO is a game beaten medal I wear with honor. It took me over a decade. When you get to level five and especially the last few races its near impossible. You have the fastest bike which makes the race a moving BLUR. By the time you get there all the other racers hate and target you. Your flying through the race twitching in every turn, trying not to get hit by racers, run into the back of cars, your bike sometimes jumping higher than the buildings , avoiding granny's with walkers, and you can't fall down because the pack flies past and you lose. The utter perfection your final lvl 5 race has to be is no short then being Neo and seeing the Matrix. When I won it, I swore I had stopped time.

Jesse, you’re a good dog such a good dog… We really need a proper remake to this game. It was such an incredibly fun time. The 3DO was so ahead of its time. This, Escape From Monster Manor, Twisted, Out Of This World, Shockwave, The Horde, Theme Park, Way Of The Warrior, PGA Tour, Advanced D&D, Total Eclipse, Killing Time, Gex, Need For Speed, Wing Commander, Star Control, Etc… There were so many great original games for it. I think many people forget just how incredible it was at the time. It’s just a shame that it’s cost not only prohibited the consumer from getting it, but because of that… It inhibited third-party developers from spending the money to develop for it. A definite recipe for disaster. While it lasted, it was some of the best gaming I ever had. Still to this day, I would put it in the top three systems I’ve ever owned. And I’ve pretty much owned them all.

I mean, it *could* be really cool - graphics have come a long way since the mid 90s. Online multiplayer could be awesome too. But the reality is, it would just be filled with day 1 patches, paid DLC, DRM, maybe even ads. And old games were too hard, so they’d have to make it easier, ruining the original feel and gameplay. It’s unlikely they’d be able to secure the rights to the music, hell you can’t even put a clip of it on KZread with being hit with a copyright ban. So the end result would just fall short of our memories of the originals. Better to just enjoy them as they are, imperfect but still extremely fun - graphics aren’t everything.

It's my favourite to play, but it's the one I played back in the day so I'm biased. A minor point, but somehow it's one everybody in gaming has been getting wrong for decades - MIDI has nothing to do with sound. It's just a standard manufacturers set for how electronic instruments could send data to each other. For instance a drum machine sending timing to a sequenced synthesizer, or a digital piano keyboard controlling music software on a PC. Somewhere in the late 90s game magazine people started confusing MIDI with cheesy sampled instruments or on-board synth engines in consoles & PC sound cards, but it's been used to integrate top flight instruments by professionals for decades.

One thing to note, all versions of the game use a midi soundtrack, it's just the console versions can load custom instruments to make the music sound a little better. The PC was stuck with General Midi, which had a preloaded selection of instruments that could not be modified in any way. Still, if you run the game on a high-end midi module it'll give the console versions a run for their money for sure! Great video, sir!
