Road Racing Legend - Joey Dunlop

Спорт

Check out the new Joey Dunlop t-shirt: bitly.ws/Z6dM
A tribute video to the ‘King of the Roads’ Joey Dunlop OBE MBE. Joey first saw the course in 1976 as he set off for his first practice - he went home with two replicas. The first of his record breaking 26 wins came in the 1977 Jubilee Classic Race.
He won the TT Formula 1 Race six years in a row between 1983 and 1988 and was Formula 1 World Champion five times.
He is the only rider to have three hat-tricks to his name - 1985 F1, Senior and Junior, 1988 F1, Senior and Junior and in 2000 the Formula One, Lightweight and Ultra Lightweight.
He has lapped the course at over 110 mph in races 256 times and has more 120mph plus laps to his credit than any other rider in the history of the races. He started in 100 races on the TT course, 98 TT and two Classic MGP Junior Races.
His astounding record of successes speak for themselves. Altogether Joey’s 26 TT wins include 7 Formula 1, 4 Senior, 3 Junior, 5 Lightweight and 5 UltraLightweight Races, plus the 1977 Jubilee Race and the 1980 Classic 1000.
During TT2000, at the age of 48, Joey counted the magnificent win in the Duke Formula One as one of his most rewarding. In his final lap of the TT circuit - the sixth lap of the Senior Race - he set his fastest ever lap at 123.87mph to become joint fourth fastest man around the course.
Joey was killed in a racing accident in Estonia in July 2000 and the world mourned the passing of one of the greatest motorcycling legends of all time.
He will be remembered for his skill and determination to win, his humility and kindness, and his warmth and sense of fun. The flash of that famous yellow helmet as he raced by is gone but the legend of Joey Dunlop will live forever.

He'd be 70 this year. I don't care what anyone says, we will never see his like again. Born to race the roads. Humble and not seeking fame, he was the smoothest , most consistent rider ever. Talent beyond words, and a true gentleman.

I went to TT in the mid 90's and after about 20 bikes had passed I said to the couple of blokes standing next to me ," He was definitely faster than the others" .... to which one of the guys replied,"Aye that was Joey Dunlop". .... that was the first time I had ever heard the name and over years has researched and watched videos and what a remarkable man he was. His legacy will live forever.

From a 250 2 stroke, to the 500 2 stroke, to the 1000 4 stroke, he owned the roads, he owned the competition,he was the master. HE WAS THE KING of the road courses. Balls the size of a whale, the HEART that was even bigger. RIP JOEY we miss men like you, they just do not make them like you anymore, they lost the die to cast men like you today. DUNLOP FOREVER

Joey was unique in sport. He went to the top of his sport and remained the same quiet humble man he had been from the beginning. He was as happy testing a bike on the roads around Armoy as he was standing on the TT rostrum. Unfortunately, we will never see his like again.

So sadly missed. 14 Years ago still seems like yesterday. Was always a privilege to watch him race. Didn't matter what he raced or what position he was in, if you saw that yellow helmet flash by, you somehow cheered more for him than the race leader. Feeling those tiny little butterflies in your stomach every time..

Joe Dunlop, what a guy. He's still talked about all over the world, I was talking to an old buddy of mine at Road America back in June and Joe's name cropped up. Boy you sure didn't ever know how many lives you touched and continue to influence. RIP 3 Tim Port Angeles WA

You might want to check out Robert, William and Michael as well... None of them, or anyone else has surpassed him - but I would like to think they have/had the same drive, and once someone like Joey set the standard, it would be hard to beat, both on and off the circuit. His family has been going strong ever since, though, so I would like to think that the mould is not completely broken after all. I think of all the Dunlops as top class racers, and top class guys otherwise - just normal, down to earth lads giving it all they've got.

joey Dunlop was a legend in every sense of the word, a very quiet man but when he was racing he had a skill that was extraordinary, I was fortunate to see him race at the skerries road races like many other people not forgetting Robert Dunlop either, when the 125 race was on both joey and Robert would be battling it out, it is good to see the legacy continue with William and Michael Dunlop and joeys son Gary taking up racing as well,

Joey Dunlop was killed in 2000 at the Kalevi Grand Prix in Tallinn, racing against a tree in the last corner of the Pirita-Kose-Kloostrimets circuit on a wet and slippery road, as a result of which he also died immediately [2]. He was in third position in the 125 cm³ machine class, driven by Hanno Velt and Lembit Teesalu. It is possible that he wanted to improve his position and was wrong. The road was broken in this bend, otherwise the champion would hardly have been lost. A quarter of an hour earlier, Dunlop had won the superbike race. Before the second start, it started to rain, then the motorcycles had rain tires. As an experienced racer, Dunlop changed a rain tire on the front of his "barrel", but not the rear. This decision could be fatal for him. In the second lap of the race, the rain intensified, and when Kose was racing from the corner to the starting straight, his fast and light Honda lost contact with the road in the water flowing over the track and drove off the track. Dunlop crashed into the pine trees growing on the side of the track and the death of the motorcycle legend was instantaneous. The red Honda motorcycle broke in half while flying into the trees The website of the Estonian government paid tribute to Dunlop on the same day. In Ireland, 50,000 mourners accompanied Dunlop on his final journey across the British Isles. Northern Ireland television broadcast the funeral live. The funeral service was held at Garryduff Presbyterian Church and Dunlop is also buried in the garden of this church. A year later, before Kalevi's 40th Grand Prix, a Dunlop memorial stone was opened in the last corner of the Pirita-Kose-Kloostrimets circuit.
