Road Layout Tutorial and Inspiration - Traffic Fix
Ойындар
Let's imagine a growing city. Cims are moving in and traffic is flowing fine. The population hits 10,000, 15,000, 20,000, and then it hits. Traffic grinds to a halt. Services can't get through, and buildings start dying. Most problems in Cities: Skylines are caused by bad traffic due to lack of a planned road layout using "Road Hierarchy". This video explores road connection concepts to help your citizens move freely and without backup.

"You should never put a roundabout on a highway." *angry Dutch noises*
@decnet100
Ай бұрын
I'm currently experimenting with a magic-roundabout-style system of single-direction (all traffic on the highway is going clockwise) hexa-/octagonal highway rings around neighbourhood cells, with two or three internal arteries for quick connection and a roundabout at the center. I'm sure it would drive real people insane having to do slight detours and constantly having to turn right, but the game population seems to like it and it makes for a very space-efficient highspeed road network.
One thing that I've noticed in real life is that local roads are often connected to arterial roads but with only right turns being allowed. That way, the arterial isn't disturbed, but there's also more connections and pedestrians have more mobility.

traffic always kills me and makes me wanna quit a city, and this was the first video that actually helped me understand how to deal with it. lots of videos show you how to fix it once it’s happened, but this preplanning is really attractive. thank you!!

Best video on road hierarchy right here. We all know that the bigger are for more volume (that's how other videos usually explain them), but this one actually shows us how you're supposed to set them up and connect them with a very nice example that you could actually copy for your own city. I would like to have seen the next step, and that's the squares filled up and see it in action, but I guess we can do that ourselves. Your point has been made!
This was so helpful in understanding basic rules of road hierarchy, and the visuals of your road you made were intuitive to understand! I'm excited to get back into City Skylines again, thanks!
this is awesome. exactly the type of planning guide i was looking for. I was watching some of Biffa's guides but his solution to city planning is "lets put a roundabout here, leading to another roundabout here, and another roundabout over here." i liked this better
@YUMBL

Thanks a lot! The right answer is always very situational and, for me at least, rarely involves a roundabout. Good network planning and traffic lights are more fun :)
Ive started watching multiple road videos, but fall off to fast. This one kept me listening for 15 minutes straight. Perfect👌
Amazing video. Tough me a lot that i did not know yet and all make sence. This video show something that is way underestimated. I love all your tutorials who are very wel and very clear explained. Thank you for putting your time in teaching us
Of all of the videos about road hierarchy, this is the only one that I have actually been able to understand. Thank you, and good job!
Thank you for being straight forward. No gimmicks or cringe! Def subbing.
I tried what you said after I watched over 20 tutorials and yours actually helped a lot. The at you break it down was better and getting a scale thank you
The highway system connector vs off ramp thing is so obvious that I never thought of it lol but I've definitely had problems with it and it never even occurred to me to change what the game gives you to start with. Thanks for this great information. I'm going to pass this on to a city skylines player called city planner plays who is a city planner by profession and I'm surprised he hasn't already done this.
great video about road hierarchy and a video all newbies should watch and derive their cities from. I used to play SimCity ALL THE TIME and got so used to the grid system, because that really was the limiting factor. So I got really good at these types of city layouts and it is the best way to start learning about efficient traffic systems. From this point on you can experiment around and make beautiful layouts, less effective for cars, but more interesting visually and for pedestrians. The one thing I always like to add is an elevated 4 lane road, then highway, perpendicular to the ground level highway, spanning the entire length of the city, often with a bend to the corners. This allows for extremely fast one way connections when ESPECIALLY industry related traffic wants to go from one end to the other. Once you add pedestrian overpasses to the roads, your traffic will stay above 90% consistently, with the help of metros later in the development. The most crucial information in this video: "Have the least amount of intersections as possible"
I understand this video more than I have with any of the other youtubers that has talked about how they do this! YUMBLE, this is great!
This is so beautiful, I can't wait to attempt implementation. Thank you.

Best explanation of road hierarchy I have ever heard. The city looks great.
Also, about service interchanges. You can harmlessly add a couple right-hand turns outside your main interchange. Like, say, looking on the last minute of the video. The cars moving from the right bridge to the "upper" city could make a right-hand turn right away from the bridge without driving all the way to the service interchange, thus freeing it from 12.5% of the traffic. Also, you can make an outcoming right-hand turn on that spot from the "lower" city to the bridge (for example, I'd upgrade the road next to the forest to arterial and make an exit from it), and that's additional 12.5% of the interchange traffic. In my experience of playing CS such separate right-hand turns (and sometimes even left-hand turns, if you go crazy) can spare you A LOT of traffic problems.
Ive been looking for a road layout tutorial! This was perfect for what I was looking for. Thank you and great video!

Great explainer! One detail: City Planner Plays shared, at some point, that safety rules require two connections to Collectors from neighbourhoods. Because otherwise they become giant cul de sacs. And if there’s a problem at one entrance, then the whole area gets cut off.
@YUMBL

The neighborhoods are connected to all roads on all sides. In total both neighborhoods have around 8 external connections. Did you finish the video?
@burmanphd
3 жыл бұрын
@@YUMBL When you started adding paths? Yes. Those are great. But also not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about a second connection that a firetruck could use. Some of those neighborhoods have two connections, but some don't. Those are big cul de sacs. This isn't my specialty, though. I'm just sharing something I learned from someone in the profession you cited as having relevant expertise.
Honestly.. of all videos I've watched... This is the very most helpful. Simple yet so concise... Good job man... Definitely earned a sub..😎
Love that service interchange, we have some of those around the Copenhagen area and it makes sense, so comuters only make right turns and help decrease traffic. Having watched a few times, I notice now that one of my mistakes is making the arterial span too long. These quadrants look like they might offer better flowing traffic instead of forcing everyone down the same one or two roads.
I was watching this while downloading mod on the workshop And I just realized I accidentally download THIS man and THAT interchange without realising lmao
Inspiration is right! Got here from a Biffa vid, and glad I did. And YES, I put down lots of bike and pedestrian paths and overpasses! I've gotten into riding a bike around my locale, and boy, do I appreciate the bike paths! (We have a citizen's group that lobbies the city for better bikeways.) Makes watching the Cims biking extra fun.
Hey man, love your videos. And even bigger thanks for always including the important Steam-Links in the description! It helped me out many times already. Keep up the awesome work!

Thanks for explaining this. Through hilarious trial and error, ended up with a road hierarchy layout without knowing there was a formal name to it. Very exciting.
I often watch Biffa videos and just today I discovers yours, I enjoy watching even if stop playng Sim City and Cities: Skylines since a while because I find it unmanageable and complicated I suspect too much randomness and bugs that lead to too much unpredictable behavior then I can't plan anything. Whatever, what I can say is that you have here the best video to explain something never explained before (to me) and I find it satisfying, plus your road system looks beautiful, organic.
