So many considerations, like what you are going to be using it for Road, Gravel, Touring, your personal fitness regarding positioning, plus budget, and not forgetting how it looks. So so many choices out there, great when you meet people who say its just a bike! A bike is a very personal thing and if you take your time and get it right you could have it for many years and cover many happy miles. Good luck, happy peddling and all the best thanks for the video Andy

Buy what you need and have a critical mind about the options. Carbon is a racing material, not ideal for the recreational cyclist as it's more expensive, depreciates quickly (nobody buys used carbon frames) and depending on the design, if it's a very stiff formulation, it will lose more momentum than a steel frame if ridden in poor/real roads due to vibrations. A couple of kg will make very little difference to recreational cyclists. Stick to standard parts that you can replace easily and cheaply. Avoid pressfit bottom brackets. Avoid disc brakes on road bikes, they're good in MTBs and cross bikes, but a good pair of callipers is still the best, cheapest and simplest option on the road. When it rains, your braking will be limited by tyre-road grip, not by your type of brakes, and I find it easier to avoid skidding with calliper brakes, as in the wet the braking performance sort of matches the available grip quite nicely (but you can still lock them if you brake hard enough).

Actually its a even harder because there are even more options than just "race" or "endurance" bikes. Between Mountain and road bikes you have a whole range of hybrids. My front suspension flat bar bike with carrying rack and mudguards and 38mm tires, could be described as "urban goat", goes any where and unbreakable. My friend has a hybrid similar bike without suspension and lighter with 32mm tyres that's better for touring. I recently bought a cyclocross bike - drop handlebars, slightly more outright frame than endurance but really rugged with 35mm tires and disk brakes. Reasonably quick on the road and quite quick on really bad roads, gravel or mud. Yep.... Tough choices. Personally I can't see myself riding hundreds of miles of dead flat road without an occasional whoo-hoo moment, but a lot of clubs exist purely for how far/how fast and its easier to compare your performance on those numbers. You're the boss and its your ride. :-)

Seriously, I think a Camry might be a decent aluminum frame with Shimano 105 components (like a Cannondale CAAD 12). A Civic (or Corolla) would be a step down in components (still good, however). Carbon fiber and upgrades to components move you up the ladder.

,so I am a 61 year old, marathons I run slowly, but I want to do Sprint Triathlons! I used to bike to work when I was 15. And I had a ten speed I road in San Diego while in the Navy, yes ours meaning the USA! So I have been watching numerous videos on modern bikes and I want to make a good choice. Tomorrow the Ragbri will pass four miles from my home, along the Mississippi River! I will be there to cheer on people who have riden across Iowa this week. Just seven miles from the finish, I doubt if the will stop to give advice....... I sure can use your's.

I find this very helpful. Thank you for making this video and keep up the good work! However, while considering the first bike, I have a hard time choosing from between endurance bike (GIANT TCR SLR2 2017) and aerodynamic bike (GIANT Propel Advanced 3 2017). The confusion comes with not knowing what kind of riding experience I am going to have.(endurance ride or..speedy on road ride..) Maybe casual riding and triathlon in the future. In addition, both of them come with SHIMANO 105 Groupset; nevertheless, a friend claims that the aerodynamic frame was originally designed for electronic shifting system, and was not good when using traditional mechanical shifting system. Can you give me some advice on choosing and a little comment on this aero frame design issue? Thank you so much! Jimmy

What's the learning curve for a road bike? Was looking to get a bike for fun, fitness and potentially ride back and forth to work. Not a big mountain bike fan as there is just a bunch of open road around here and a 50 mile paved trail.

I ended up buying a Specialized Diverge this weekend. Love it so far. Now if I can get away from work to get some good use to it before the rain comes this week.

7:16 I would also add that I think clipless pedals are far safer as in an emergency as you can unclip both feet simultaneously and throw yourself clear.

Wonder if this would be a good idea for a 10km ride to college, all road. Very sloped road though.

Joel Hernández good, but make sure the cassette on the back wheel is 11-36t, or even 11-40t. Many road bikes are 11-28t, just be careful

disc brakes prolong your carbon wheels because caliper brakes eventually wear out carbon wheels. Also, clipless can also improve pace as its works like a double drivetrain. As you push down on the front pedal you are also pulling up the rear pedal, this helps a lot on hills.

No, you're not pulling up. You're just taking the weight off of the pedal on the upstroke. The human leg is incredibly bad at pulling.

I am just a regular cyclist. Single leg drill on trainer set with resistance to simulate climbing, each of my two legs can pull 100 watt for a minute. So human legs are quite ok at pulling.

golferchin76 100 watts for a minute is an incredibly low amount of power, considering any fat dumbass can push over 200 for an indefinite amount of time.
