I will forever sadly associate the beautiful Lola T70 and Road America with the death of Donny Skogmo. The old pit wall was a hard ended concrete wall. I will spare you the details. On a more personal note my attendance at the 1965 500 was cut short by a near fatal asthma attack. Darn it, Jim Hall and Hap Sharp were there in the 2-Cs and I wanted to see them win.. instead I was hauled away mid race... and only heroic medical intervention prevented my death.

We like to think the driver plays a part. The two coupe are running 410 motors, versus the 305 in the spyder. The spyder is also using a period fiberglass body, in comparison to what I think is carbon fibre bodies on the coupes. None of my literature shows spyders and coupes together. Love the question, and the reference to Elkhart...thats what I call it too :)

Absolutely fantastic, proper racing cars ! Amazing how short the throw is from third to fourth. Also, I notice you aren't using the clutch when going up through the gears - is that quite normal on these Can-Am beasts ? And when changing down, if going from fifth straight into second, do you only need to blip the clutch once when selecting the lower gear ?
@smiley19912
7 жыл бұрын
The Hewland gear box uses a dog ring for engagement, only need the clutch for starting and stopping. You use the throttle to get the engine into the range of the next gear, blip the throttle to break torque for the down-shift and lift slightly to break torque on the up-shift.
@ryangarritty9761

Given the Hewland box was also standard in Grand Prix racing, I assume the same was true there too. Thanks for the info'.

I'd like to have seen a Mk.IIIb coupe with an alloy 427, for the 1967 Endurance races The Lola-Aston Martin was a disaster. Should have been a winner with the 427. Why is this car faster than the other Lolas on the straight stretches?
@JimPaceMotorsports
5 жыл бұрын
Dyshof TV this Lola has a smaller (correct) engine than most of the others on track however by applying power sooner in the corner and exiting the turn with more speed that "exit speed" is carried down the straight allowing the more powerful Lolas to be overtaken. The final lap pass from 3rd to 2nd was done with exit speed and a drafting component both assisting the lower powered car to pass the more powerful one. Thanks for watching. JP

Is he not using the clutch during the upshifts? Why?
@JimPaceMotorsports
9 жыл бұрын
This is a non-synchronized gearbox and does not require the use of the clutch. It shifts faster and lasts longer when not using the clutch. The clutch can be used of course but often the clutch fails from the constant use/heat generated every time it slips (Clutch is designed to slip). Same true on downshifting.Shift into N, rev the engine to match the rpm needed for the next lower gear and select the lower gear. All falls into place. This was the first time to drive this particular Lola T70 and I was learning the gearbox along the way. Often I used the clutch on the downshift until I had a better feel of the gear ratios, linkage, throttle response. Thanks for watching. JP

The Coupes have a lot of stuff mandated by the FIA for Sports 25 or 50, whatever. Grp. 7 rules do away with most of that.. So it's not just the top that makes them heavier. A couple T-70s were at Sebring, 1965. They, and the Gurney 19J that had been SO fast at Daytona, made no impression. Le Deluge had something to do with THAT. A Sprite was in the top 10… on ground clearance! Open cars became bathtubs on wheels… Tires and coolers floating in flotillas…. Ferrari electrics thought it the Fourth Of July! What Ferrari's there WERE!.. Private entries only.. NOTHING like '64, my first..

No clutch on upshift??
@JimPaceMotorsports
5 жыл бұрын
@GP...most racing transmissions (compared to production based street cars) of the era were non-synchronized gear boxes and shifted perfected well up and down without the clutch. The down shift required a "blip" of the throttle to match the rpms to minimize wear. The technique was part of "heel/toe" downshifting. The clutch was not needed and the clutch lasted much longer as the only time the clutch slipped was leaving the pitlane. Thanks for watching. JP

This driver doesn't use the clutch on upward gear changes .... he lifts off a little and grabs the next gear while the engine revs are dying. Bit he does use the clutch on downward shifts and blips the throttle to match road speed. Nice.
out fing standing!!!!!!!!!
Predator Performance!
Wow interesting on the shifting. I have myself a V8 Stock Car for road racing and the Jerrico is just messing with me. That is the first time I have herd the double clutching explained. Oh and thanks for the great vidios. Chris Gill
Very good driver.
awesome.......
Balls of Steel...
Yes family-friendly please :) No Ferrari's in this field. All Lola race, the 2 Lola T-70 Coupes look a lot like many 70's Ferrari's.
Just little of those days
Real racing

The Hewland gear box uses a dog ring for engagement, only need the clutch for starting and stopping. You use the throttle to get the engine into the range of the next gear, blip the throttle to break torque for the down-shift and lift slightly to break torque on the up-shift.

Maybe Jim Hall had a lock on that motor, from GM? I attended Sebring 12 and Daytona 24 1964 - 1972. The Golden Years. Forza Ferrari! 330P4
Holy Smokes Batman 😎😎🙂😎😎
Makes me giggle like a little kid listening to a MFI big block
Sweet JP
How does shifting work on this car? I don't see him using a clutch.
Clearly the T70 spIder outpaces the coupe version at Elkhart. Did the two versions ever race together in the 1960's? I can't think of any series where they did that.
Good eye!!!

is that thing faster than the orange one?

In some corners, you would only downshift once but the revs would be really high, what were you doing?

4th to 1st. Watch him then go 2nd, 3rd 4th
Good driving and race. I liked it! It would be nice to drive this Lola. I personally would push less the throttle in some heel toe but yes in a race I think it's hard... Good job!
Hello racers,is this the car,which won the 1966 can-am series? Thank you!

The Lola T70 did. Don't know, but doubt this particular T70 was in the '66 CanAm.

How many T70s were in that race? Seems like you only passed 1 McLaren and about 10 other Lolas
Why is this car faster than the other Lolas on the straight stretches?
@JimPaceMotorsports
Why?
@JimPaceMotorsports

JP

How could I not watch? Fantastic stuff, such iconic cars and driven the way they were meant to be! I raced in the SCCA for 10 years, ITE, PCA2, SPM, with good success...But was raised watching the Trans Am and Can Am races that came through Kent Pacific Raceways in the 60's and early 70's. Always wanted to drive a V-8 Can AM car, never quite got there, though...
Whatever Lola wants ...
keeping the rotos cool with heavy braking technology wasn't available yet...........ceramics etc was coming
Nope about 6 seconds per lap slower. I was curious myself.
Just Fluid
@JimPaceMotorsports
JP
Is this a real Lola or a reproduction or a replica?

Its an interesting car, it is a real Lola, made by Lola but is not period. The owner restored/refreshed and found the Gurney Lola T70, as a gift Lola made this car for the owner.
Q. What would be your dream job Jim? A. I already have it
How do you concentrate with that gorgeous young woman on your mind? GREAT video, THANKS

Antonis Petrou...thanks for watching. I feel the same emotions every lap. Wonderful car of a forgotten era around one of the USA's classic circuits.
Those downshifts though....mmmmmm
this video should be tagged 'Parental Guidance' ! too pornographic !
Jim Pace died of COVID?
Thanks for cutting out half of the lap with your mindless editing. I was hoping to ride around the entire circuit and hear the sound of the engine and transmission and the beautiful exhaust notes....damn. It's always more exciting in the car when you can see the closing speeds.
