I should have pointed out that washing and reusing your RO membrane should never be done. The stuff you see is just the dirt on the surface. What you don't see is the heavy metals, and environmental toxins that are still trapped in the filter layers. When you attempt to wash the filter, you end up loosening some of those toxins, so you can drink them later. OH, and I forgot to say, thank you for the video!

There are actually research papers that highlight that cleaning with bleech is acceptable a few times ;-)

Very educative video. Clear directions for not reusing / cleaning fouled membranes. Sure , it is waste of time good job dear. You are rocking.❤❤

Even though this video doesn't show how to effectively clean the filter so it can be reused. it effectively shows you how the membrane works so the understanding that if you took off the inlet and outlet to the filter and swap them over you would have reverse the cycle and would possibly be able to push out any dirt in the opposite direction. Side note some filters have a 420mb flow valve on the waste outlet so you would have to connect after that. You can't miss it it's a 4 inch long plastic cylindrical tube that is about 20mm diameter with miller bar rating on it.

Thanks for your tutorial for cleand RO membrane that is very good idea.

Good job,👍. U hv invested good time & effort to show "what is inside" & saved my time & efforts, 😊, thanks. Few notes: v need a proper working space for this job. -after a wash leave the sheets for drying be reassembly. -u will also need plain surface some stretching arrangement while rolling back/ assembling back. Last but not the least, ur kid is nearby & a new surgeon is in process, b careful next time one of ur gadget may b on ur dissection table under his expert hands😊. Bless u.

good job. the initial TDS will be high because that will be the DS that has remained in the media and not washed out. if u kept water flow through the filter, u would find the TDS value drop. if done well, it should go lower... i suspect after half hour, u will see the TDS drop.

Fascinating. I would try a 2 stage cleaning process. First would be an acidic cleaner like what you get at the home store for cleaning masonry surfaces or, just straight to hydrochloric acid, also known as muriatic acid and watered down some, then poured into one of the open ends. If there is an inlet end I would put it there with the other end closed off and let it soak for several hours or even a day. Next I do a forced water rinse and then put in a lye solution and let that soak for a prolonged period followed by another forced water rinse. If any of the filter components dissolve, experiment over. If you see stuff come out that is not the filter materials themselves you just might have a reusable filter. I have well water with minerals and would love one of these at my kitchen sink, at the least. If re cleaning can actually work then maybe a whole house unit ? RO units I see in the trash and at the used construction materials store is testament to the expense of maintaining such a system. A lady who works at a local hardware store told me she had an RO system at their home but gave it up due to the expense of maintenance. One kind of chemical or the other may be all that is needed for cleaning your filters for reuse thus saving time and expense of using two kinds of chems. . I have carbon block cartridge filters for my water which helps somewhat and I DO soak in an acid environment; Hydrogen peroxide and a little muriatic mixed in. There is plenty of bubbling as for what they do capture breaks down and then the cartridges go into a spare cartridge container and are flushed with a garden hose hooked up onto an adapter fitting (hose to 3/4 pipe) and run backward. The rinse water goes into the hole in the middle, from where it normally comes out of, to the outer circumference, where it normally comes in from the well. . I may look into buying an RO replacement filter to experiment on just to see what effect my scheme would have before buying a system. I am getting many reuses on my carbon block filters which cost $14 apiece, last time I bought them. I knew THAT expense could not go on. It helps to have two sets of filters to make for a quick swap which reduces down time to mere minutes while you can clean what came out at leisure. Last bit: if you have 1 micron or less filtering it will help to go with the 4" x 9" filter set up and do two in parallel. That should preserve an unfiltered flow rate.

Sirji, i think following steps will useful to clean ro membrane 1) flow pure water + citric acid (or other chemical which will helpfull e.g. vinegar ) in the membrane for few minutes 2) keep membrane as it is (after first step ) for some hour 3) close waste water outlet. And then flow ro water with pressure in the pure water outlet of membrane for some hour. In this water comeout from inlet of membrane. Please reply is it helpful or not I

This was a great video! Thank you!! I actually stumbled on to this video because I was looking up how to dispose of ro membranes. I wanted to know if I could send them somewhere to be recycled in some other way such as just reusing the plastic. But this was very educational as well. Not only did you say "this wont work" but you PROVED IT. Very important. The replacements for ro systems are so expensive, it makes me sad to throw them out when they are no longer good. If anyone knows of a place I could send them to be recycled, even back to the manufacturer, please let me know!!

मैंने अपने ro की मेम्ब्रेन इसी तरह से साफ की ओर उसको हाउसिंग में लगा कर ro में फिट कर दिया पर जब ro को ऑन किया तो सिंगल साइड से पानी लीक करने लगा और जब कुछ सेकंड ro को चलाया तो दूसरी तरफ से भी पानी बोहत तेजी से लीक करने लगा जिधर दी कनेक्टर होते है जब कि मेम्ब्रेन को इस तरह से साफ करने से पहले ऐसे पानी लीक नही हो रहा था ऐसा किस लिए हुए

I too opened up my filter just to know what's inside. At first I allowed it dry. A lot of flakes came out. Must be the calcium carbonate and other salts. Then washed it. Let it dry. Then roll it and seal it as you did. It should work. I am using the flakes to see if there is a better growth.

I suggest you use REALLY clean water, if you're going to attempt to clean your RO filter. You should be cleaning the water at every step of the process and at no time should the filter be sitting in water that is brown.
