RMIS’s mobile handling facility

Around 40-50% of South Africa’s national cattle herd is owned by communal and smallholder farmers. As part of the Inclusive Growth initiative, the Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS) aims to increase production by 35% by 2030. RMIS has identified 1.4 million hectares to support medium- to large-scale black producers. They plan to provide production support to help 250 000 additional weaners enter the formal market over the next decade. The goal is to establish adequate animal handling facilities in areas with the highest production and animal health risks. African Farming editor Peter Lebogang Mashala spoke to Khomotjo Mashiloane, RMIS’ livestock technical advisor, at this year’s Nampo Harvest Day to learn more about the mobile handling facility they use for this purpose.
