I was searching for DSP 9632 info and came across this. Good video and yes, @ £650 the 56 was a budget interface. Mind you, not a bad one. Firewire (support) is alive and well on Linux, surprisingly.

Well... I finally learnt something today, good video! ADAT has always confused and you've made sense of that now! In theory could I use my old Edirol UA-1000 as an I/O for the RayDAT? Haven't fire is up in years but hope it could still serve that one function maybe? My main research leading to PCI initially came from MIDI issues but I'm loving the idea of trying RME, sounds like the way to go.

Soundcraft lx7ii 24ch into a couple of synced behringer ada8200s converters via adat into an rme raydat 36i/o. I make hip-hop tunes so i use the ins and outs mainly at line level, not as much mic usage/rec as band recording. Thanks, G

I’m presently inquiring about changing my big analog mixer for a more compact digital mixer. Most have AES XLR type connector outputs, how do you connect this with a RME card with AES/EBU ? My studio setup is hybrid, a ton of analog gear plugged in to a big analog mixer with the subgroups routed in 2 MOTU 2408mk3.

Lol I just watched the whole video and I’ve owned a Raydat pcie for a year. I’m just on the floor rearranging some things and installing another m.2 drive. Wondered what speed slot the RME should go in and somehow this popped up and o watched the whole thing despite living the video everyday. RME PCIE ftw! Also, don’t forget!! RME implemented their own midi handling through the RAYDAT pcie and other pcie interfaces. THIS MEANS ITS NOT SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE SHORTCOMINGS OF USB MIDI JITTER. So all those external midi boxes people sell to fix those issues that cost $200-400... just buy one of these and you’re set with so many other features. It’s also a relatively cheap upgrade for the TCO option to go word clock, and with the aes or spdif options you’ll be flying 192khz in no time (for what reason I do not not know, but hey, sometimes you just gotta flex on 44khz.) I personally got mine when I realized that Mac pcs were not the cutting edge anymore for audio and too overpriced. But I had an apogee symphony MK1... doesn’t work with Windows. Except it does work as a stand-alone converter. Again, Raydat for the win. Didn’t have to sell a $2500 converter at a huge loss just for a format change. It’s absofuckinglutely heaven. I just wish RME had more of a reputation for mastering. I’d take the plunge since their gear is so stable. I’ve never had an interface just. Plain. Work. Like this one. Over a year and not a single headache ever. But the snobby clients that know want to see a big name box they can gush over... show them 2-3U of shiny metal and Alps switches and they lose their minds... I’ve done null tests with my akai mpc live and the apogee symphony. Not much of a different at 24 bit 48khz. Nothing anyone would seriously notice except with straight square wave synths or stuff pushing the limits of any converters slew rate. Preamps make much more of a difference.

I installed the RME Raydat Driver, for windows 10. Now, RME Raydat is not communicating with the Apogee AD16, DA16 converters. I do not understand. Is there something missing to install? Does it not work correctly with windows 10? If you can give me a light, I appreciate it. Cheers.

I'm digging your videos, man. I too am trying to get away from Firewire right now. My issue is that I'm running a decked out 5,1 cheesegrater Mac with 2x3.46Ghz 6 core processors with 64G of RAM, which is awesome for the video work I do. I would get the trashcan Mac, but Apple is supposed to be releasing something modular next year and I'd rather wait to see what direction they go. All in all, the computer I have is fine except for the fact that it doesn't have Thunderbolt. Apple had the technology, but they didn't include it because they wanted everyone to upgrade to the trashcan. Anyway, I digress. The new Apollos just barely came out, and I think they are smokin'. I've been considering the 1st Gen Apollos which are FireWire with a Thunderbolt 2 or 3 option card, so they're kind of future proof, but I wouldn't mind picking up one of the brand new ones that would last me years and years. I also have a Macbook pro that I use for remote stuff, and having an all in one interface is very useful for it. Anyway, what I'm getting at is that I want to upgrade my interface, the Apollos seem like great interfaces, from what I hear their converters are top notch, better than what would come in the ProTools HD systems that ran you $10,000. I'd probably just want to run ADAT from the Apollo to the RayDAT to achieve faster transfer speeds and that way I wouldn't have to go out and get a set of separate converters. What do you think? Do you have any suggestions on converters or a good setup for me?

  • @adamsteelproducer

Hi Ray! Yes I do monitor through reaper, but I’m careful not to use any plugins whilst tracking that add any extra latency. I track at 128 sample latency and drummers can’t hear it, but if I add a VST anywhere with PDC (like for example Slate’s Virtual Tape Machine) that can add its own latency and cause but delay problems. You can find out which tracks have extra latency in reaper’s performance window (ctrl Alt P)

+Paul Farnell hi Paul, it sounds like you've got the makings of a great setup there. Unfortunately you don't have anything with a DAC, so as of now no way to play anything back, you will need to add outputs to the system. What could you spend? A behringer ada8200 would to the job in the short term giving you 8 outputs (maybe not use the preamps as they're pants, but useful as extras) but something like a Mytek DAC would work well if you have some more budget.

Hey! Yes that’s right, with 8 channels per Adat port that’s 32 in, 32 out (at 44 or 48) then 16 at 96 and 8 at 192, although you also need external devices that support 96 or 192kHz over ADAT (personally I don’t use 192 ever). And yes, you can use more than one Raydat card together in a system, you just have to get an internal sync cable which usually comes with them so they work perfectly at the same time

The RayDat has lower latency performance because it’s connected directly to the PCIe bus with no middle man- the fire face is considered a flagship because it has all the different elements (dac, preamps etc) in one box but the RayDat is better for what I do- it’s just a far more specialist niche since you need all the preamps/ADC separately as well

Frankly, my personal experience with Focusrite interfaces is, that their drivers are almost complete garbage. They're not stable, they get buffer underruns when you look at them wrong and their driver updates can make things worse as well as better... I never recommend their interfacces to anyone who wants something that works :) I've had MOTU 828MKII for some years now, bough it used for cheap and despite some issues with their drivers when it comes to sample rate changes and how it (doesn't) deals with them, the drivers worked on Windows 7 nicely and they're stable. But RME drivers are completely different class, they always have been and RME is proud of their engineering teams for making the best drivers out there for a reason. So the crackling and other issues you had with liquid sapphire might be because their drivers are utter bull, not necessarily because of the FireWire itself :) But anyway, you've moved on so it doesn't really matter anymore :)
