Riverside Walk along the Beverley Brook: A Scenic Stroll in London (4K)
To celebrate London Rivers Week I took a walk along the Beverley Brook from New Malden to its confluence with the Thames at Barnes.
www.thames21.org.uk/event/lon...
Beverley Brook is also an important character in Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London / Peter Grant series of novels. This fantastic walk took us from an underpass beneath the A3 road across Wimbledon Common, Richmond Park, Palewell Common and Barnes Common to the wide reaches of the Thames near Putney. This is one of the most beautiful London rivers walks.

❤❤Thank you so much. Love the Rivers books. So nice to see what this really looks like.
Magical! Thank you.
Magical! Thank you, John!😽
Thanks for this video, I loved to watch my beautiful neighborhood featured in such a lovely walk across Beverley Brook ❤
Wow, that was wonderful, and brought back many personal memories. Thank you John!
Thanks John!
Magical!
No one else has noticed you've 'ad yer 'air coot! Next will be the beard and we won't even recognize you Looking great. Lovely video as always. You really keep me in touch with England my home country. I left it 50 years ago.
Love this walk, I used to take my forest school children to Barnes common, visit the cemetery with them and play pooh sticks off of the bridge into Beverly Brook, this film was like visiting an old friend 💚
A total voyage discovery of a gentle, elegant, ambling waterway drifting towards the Thames. Loved it.
What can I say? One of your best walks, loved every minute, especially the Hawthorn blossom and cow parsley. ❤

Another absolutely smashing walk, thanks John. Actually, I have a confession to make. When I was a callow, unregarding schoolboy of 16, in1964, I blew up Beverly Brook. Our school, on Brixton Hill, had no playing field, so we were often taken to Wimbledon Common to engage in 'Cross-country Running'. The reality was that we jogged the length of a football field into the tree-line, mucked about for an hour or so, then jogged back. This often consisted off the setting of of 'explosive devices', fashioned out of lengths of pipe, or round brass doorknobs, made out of a weedkiller (which you could buy over the counter at hardware stores), mixed with sugar. Some of the 'chemists amongst us fashioned a fuse that burned underwater. We used to toss these into Beverly Brook; thay exploded with a satisfying 'whump', and an eruption of water. How we were not maimed, or killed is still a mystery to me. If anyon e walks that length of the Brook, I would be grateful if they could, possibly throw a votive offering, on my behalf, into her waters. A broken sword, or a spear head, or, more prosaically, a 2 penny coin. This may form an appeasement, and, hopefully, an expiation for my youthful misdeeds. My apologies to Beverly Brook.
My request has finally been answered thank you. The Beverly brook is a jewel in south west london.
Beverly Brook, sounds like a dinner lady at my primary school. Thanks John
Great video. You walked past my place - You should have stopped for a coffee break. Thanks for sharing the walk.
Once again, thankyou John.
A lovely walk, John, thank you. My wife was also admiring your haircut - you could be in Blur! 👍🏼
A lovely sunny Sunday walk along a water way following my auntie Beverly Brooks who used to live around there.
I walked the Orwell and Stour estuaries, this bank holiday weekend , was blown away with the beauty!
Really enjoyed that walk, thank you. It must be in our DNA to be drawn towards the wet stuff, can't beat it.
Thank you for this walk, the Beverley brook was my youthful playground and place to learn. the last part where the dam is and the "wider bit" was where barges were push in to the council vestry to take away putney's waste. that river has a big part in my life.
Thank you for this walk it's the area I live
Many happy memories walking through Richmond Park and along the Beverly Brook whilst visiting our Nan who lived in Sherfield Gardens just around the corner. Thanks John for a magical walk
Oh John, that is a cracking walk. Thank you for sharing. ( it's made my bank holiday). 😊
That was just what I needed, thanks John. Loved seeing the heron. Cheers.
Beautiful. I grew up in Barnes right next to the brook. Spent many happy days playing in the brook as a kid.
A beautiful walk thank you😍

Lovely walk today, past some of my old stomping grounds. Thank you as always.
Yet another inspirational walk, John. I live fairly near the Beverley Brook but have never taken the time to wander along her banks, the Wandle being my usual stroll of choice. Thanks to this lovely film, I will be visiting beautiful Bev as soon as possible.
A delightful river walk enhanced by the pretty flowering trees.
Thank you John for an entertaining, informative and thoroughly excellent meander in London beside Beverley Brook. 5🌠
A beautiful confluence indeed.
A loverly walk .Thanks
Those herons were beautiful and wonderful to see so close to a major city. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you John. Did this walk at the weekend and every bit as good as you said … even saw the Heron up the tree! Cheers.
South London is where I would want to live
Outstanding chat and cinematography John. Thank you🖤😎👌
Great walk - lovely views - thank you!
Oh what a smashing walk. The Beverly Brook walk is. I would love to walk it after watching your film for the fifth time. I used to walk footpaths for miles and miles, but nowadays as I have got old, I cant walk much anymore. It dose wind me up that I cant walk to much anymore, as I get out of breath very quickly, but I love going on your walks on my computer, and this walk must be one of your best ever made by you. I used to do so many walks and lead rambles too. years ago. Thank you so much for what you've done, giving me so much pleaser going on walks with you in my minds eye. Keep up the great work. And I'll see you on your next walk "WHERE EVER THAT MIGHT BE" Jim Varney
Unbelievable - we did the exact same walk yesterday; only in the opposite direction!
Wonderful walk. I am always amazed how little I really know about areas that I think I knew well. Always a joy to watch.
Hear the lark and harken to the dog fox, gone to ground, see the splashing of the kingfisher, flashing through the water and a river of green is sliding unseen beneath the trees, laughing as it passes through the endless summer, making for the seas ( Grantchester Meadows - Pink Floyd)
Just the tonic I needed. In the middle of a slightly off/odd feeling day, a river walk was just the ticket to calm my nerves. Thank you for all the work you put into your videos. Cheers from Florida's Nature Coast!
Gorgeous film John, thanks.
Yay! What a wonderful start to Monday morning 😊

Loved the Heron, a beautiful walk indeed 😊❤
What a fantastic walk, one of your best, I think. Full of arresting images, such as that statue-like Heron, and engaging narrative, making Beverley Brook, come alive with meaning and significance. Thank you!
Despite living in Richmond, I've never followed the whole Beverley Brook walk. I always assumed that it included long road stretches, which put me off. Along the section in Richmond Park, you often see egrets (pure white birds like small herons) and even kingfishers (if you're lucky). The Tamsin Trail is a well-maintained wide trail all round the park. It was created by stringing together and improving various small footpaths, paid for by a wealthy local man who asked for it to be named after his daughter.

Enchanting.....especially Richmond Park. .........and did you know there is a level crossing at Enfield Lock Station.
Love your river walks. Even though I've never been to London, I feel connected in some way. Perhaps because Vermont has 800 rivers and it's one of the smallest states in the USA. Where we live in Barre, we are surrounded by rivers and brooks. Like London and parts of England, they use to use the waterways to transport goods and services, especially granite, from the queries. I think the waterway gives a feeling of tranquility and peace. I used to live by a waterfall, and it was lovely, it would lull me to sleep.

Loved it. Loved your insightful commentary, nature photography, musical acommliment, and the watery procession. Not to be to philosophical....but life is much like a watery confluence. Start small and stream-like...and end up in the mother of all rivers to be taken away to the sea. God bless the cow-parsley
That was great. Used to be my stomping ground (Wimbledon, Raynes Park, New Malden), Brought back good memories. Thank you.
I first heard of this walk in your Putney to Richmond walk so glad you have got round to do it, it's on my list to do.
Great walk , thanks , weirdly I've just downloaded the latest Rivers book , looking forward to reading it ! Cheers John 🌸☮️☯️🌈
Lovey walks John I live in the Lincolnshire countryside and I wish we had some walks like you have in London
I like the sight and smell of those alleyways paths at this time of year with 'urban' wildflowers. Cow parsley is also known as queen anns lace. It is an essential pollination plant. London is home to large no. of ring-necked parakeets.

The nearby Hogsmill river ( Ewell to Kingston and a similar distance) is even better John. A very rare example of a Chalk stream, sourced from a spring at the foot of Epsom downs. You’d love it!

Greetings John. Great river walk in another of my old stomping grounds - I used to go to school in Raynes Park and remember the brook being close by. The Pyl brook is a tributary of it which runs close to where my Mum is buried in Merton & Sutton cemetery. Will have to do this walk one time.
I'm not sure who is madder; You, who describes these scruffy old ditches as beautiful and magnificent; Or me, who spends hours watching every one of your videos. 😄

I've felt that at times. Some of the rivers are pretty manky. I think that what unites them, is that, despite what humankind has done to them to them, they, like the Dude, ABIDE.

I walked the Hogsmill from the Thames at Kingston, then across Nonsuch Park to pick up the Beverley, but there was only a small section of the Pyl Brook (one of the main tributaries) that was walkable. Had to be content with clues in street names down to Raynes Park and the footpath that follows the railway back to New Malden. Have done the Bev walk as published a couple of times.
A wonderful walk. I have been a devotee of your channel for a few years now. A Hackney boy, I grew up very near the River Lea and was able to visit Springfield Park by climbing over my garden wall. I am now many miles away, living in Thailand. However, I spent several months last year, dividing my time between Cambridgeshire and New Malden. A favourite stroll was from New Malden to Raynes Park, if only I knew about the Beverley Brook at that time.
Fabulous walk John.

Thank you, John, for another marvellous walk. What a delight it was to see how well the Beverley and her immediate environment are being cared for by humankind. Once again I am reminded that my native London can be quite beautiful, and in many ways has far more wildlife and wonderful wild spaces than the dustbowl of farmed North Cornwall where I currently reside. And yes, South London has many common spaces, still so valuable for ordinary people to access. Maybe one day you might take a trip to Mitcham Common, which was a much loved haunt when I was a child. I hope that families still go there to pick blackberries. P.S. Thank you for the recommendation of Feral, George Monbiot's book about rewilding.

seeing the heron & Ducks makes me think must be fish... that gives hope the river is not so polluted .:-)
It seems only natural that river would be seen as magical with as this walk shows so many plants that can be used growing alongside them and crossing without the aid of a bridge requiring a degree of good fortue to find a good crossing point. Offering a devotion to the river deity for favour would not have hurt as you commit to crossing.
What a lovely way to spend a Bank Holiday afternoon having just got back from a 13 km walk from Eltham to Woolwich. Always a joy to walk with you John and parts of this one I know well. Thank you!
Loved the walk John, especially the plants and trees plus the birds. You should get a four legged mate to go with you. Might help out with the nav.
Nice one, John! ❤
Nice one, I walked this a few years ago mid winter during the pandemic, I had it all to myself but struggled in many parts because of deep mud, perhaps it's time to give it a go mid summer , great video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙏🏼
Fantastic walk. Maybe add The Norbury brook to your list? Starts in Croydon then Selhurst, Thornton Heath, Norbury and enters the Wandle after becoming the river Graveney. Look forward to the next one wherever that may be 😊

Thanks for the reminder - I passed the Graveney as I walked over Streatham Common on my Capital Ring walk
Been to Richmond park more times than I can remember, been all over it since I was a kid and never knew there was a river going through it!
You could have popped into the London Wetland Centre, there is a nice nice little pond near the entrance, with a statue of Sir Peter Scott, and that part is free. The main part you have to pay.
Bushey park is recommended next to Hampton court near the Thames Kingston bridge and Hampton hill and teddington
Super little river. No wonder the first heron looked grumpy. I couldn't spot any fish either!
