Love the nostalgia. Great to have this history preserved for good.

Excellent........the first ship at the beginning of your clip is the Queen Mary II, a Clyde ferry. It was originally named just Queen Mary, but in 1934 Cunard requested this name for their new super liner, thus this Clyde work horse was renamed, and did not get it's proper name back until the Liner was taken out of service in the late 60's and preserved in the U.S.

Your probably aware, but if not, the Queen Mary is once again docked on the Clyde at Govan undergoing restoration. 👍🏻

One of the coal wagons was marked LMS. British Railways took over in 1948. Apart from the music, a great video. Now we import railway locomotives from Spain and Canada! The last British locos were the class 60, built in the early 90's. So sad.

Agree with you about the music. All about Scotland's great river and they play English patriotic tunes like "Land of Hope and Glory"

Wonderful program Ships and Yards. I would love to see more about those who worked in those yards Men and Women . Billy Connelly put the spark of the Arch 😁 Welder in my ? Possibly a Bible pun in the Arch .All about and aboard 2 by 2 who let the snake in. Boot them off . Noah forgot they swim and become polatition's. I do love Ships and Glasgow. I just want to make people feel better while learning.

Some of this film might have been late 1940s. However the shots of the Athenia must have been before 3rd September 1939.

yes. By U30 if I'm not mistaken. So if this is taken after the war it can't be her. But it seems like the ship launched at 4:35 (ca) is SS Canton? If that is the case case, this must be pre-war since Canton was launched in 1938. And then the other ship might be Athenia. I'm not qualified to distinguish between her and Letita, but it might say Athenia in the bow picture at 3:30? In that case this must be taken somewhere between 1938 and WWII

This is most definitely the ATHENIA and the prewar CANTON being launched. I can read ATHENIA on her bows.

I really enjoyed this - the ship at the end is either the Athenia or the Letitia - can anyone positively identify her? My grandparents sailed to the US in 1939 on the Athenia and returned on her just before the outbreak of war; my cousin came back from Christmas Island on the Letitia in the 1950s when she was a troopship under the name - I think - of Captain Cook.
