Rita Shane - Rossini: THE SIEGE OF CORINTH, Si ferite, New York 1976, High E-flat

Музыка

THE SONGBIRD: Rita Shane (1936 - 2014) was an American dramatic coloratura from the Bronx. She sang primarily in the United States with many appearances at the New York City Opera (1965 debut as Donna Elvira) and eight seasons at The Met (1973 debut as Queen of the Night). She actually started there as a secretary with the Metropolitan National Council’s fundraising department in the 1960s. Shane made international guest appearances in many top classical opera cities and festivals. She studied with legendary teacher Beverley Peck Johnson.
THE MUSIC: This history of Rossini's "The Siege of Corinth" is a complicated one. "Le siège de Corinthe" was his first French opera (he had recently moved to Paris). However, the work was essentially a reworking of his 1820 Italian opera for Naples, "Maometto II" with reused music and a similar plot and characters -- though with a new French libretto. This French version premiered in Paris in 1826 and was a success. It was performed in opera houses until the 1860s, sometimes in an Italian translation as "L'assedio di Corinto." The work fell into obscurity until it was revived (in French) in 1949 with Renata Tebaldi. La Scala chose it for the Rossini centennial -- Beverly Sills and Marilyn Horne starred, with Thomas Schippers conducting a new performing edition by musicologist Randolph Mickelson that made use of insertion arias from the original Naples and Venice versions as well as from other obscure Rossini operas (as was Rossini's practice). This amalgamated version was produced by The Met in 1975 and Sills recreated the role of Pamira in her long-awaited house debut.

Very impressive, especially considering she was subbing for an indisposed Sills. The slow cadenza up to and descending from the top E flat was quite fine. This production was, indeed, quite an amalgamation. Parts of Maometto II, the cabaletta here from a revision of Mose which had an even earlier predecessor. And for the final scene, Schippers added a cabaletta to “ Giusto ciel” that perplexed the great critic Andrew Porter who could not figure out where it came from. Apparently it was the cabaletta finale to Pacini’s AMAZILLI and it had been inserted into that scene by Giulia Grisi when she sang Pamira. So a hodgepodge indeed. But a vastly entertaining one.

Sorry, autocorrect substituted Giulia for Giuditta. It was Giuditta Grisi who inserted the cabaletta in Venice in 1829.

Sills was indisposed and Shane filled in as Pamira and as Violetta for Sills. As a cover she may have been granted a performance, but I don’t know

Only 100x better than, say, Nadine Sierra. But as a "second" to Sills, she's quite close to that diva in most respects. Actually, in certain areas of her voice, especially on the "ee" and modified "ee" vowels, her timbre is remarkably similar to Sills. Wonderful.

The conductor should have slowed the tempo down in “Si ferrite” so Rita Shane wouldn’t have such a tough time with those florid passages since she wasn’t as nimble as Sills. But except for that, this is a strong and passionate performance. It must have been an ordeal trying to fill Sills’ shoes that night and she acquits herself very well.

Second cast. Rita Shane and Joanne Grillo had one performance replacing Sills and Verrett.
