The diagnosis of carotid artery stenosis is usually made by the doctor hearing a bruit in the neck or when an ultrasound is performed to evaluate for possible causes of stroke. Carotid artery stenosis is a narrowing that affects one of the main arteries of the brain and is responsible for a large number of strokes. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of disability in adults. The purpose of treatment of carotid artery stenosis is to reduce the risk of future stroke.

I was diagnosed because of hearing a thumping sound in my left ear. It sounded like a real fast heart beat. It would last hours sometime and 20 minutes other times. I told my Dr and I got an ultrasound of my neck and sure enough I had 50-69% stenosis. So I would definitely talk to your Dr! He told me if it’s only heard in one ear it more significant. It could also be high blood pressure causing it. I didn’t have high blood pressure so we did ultrasound! Hope this helps!

Hi where are you based. Had my carotid surgery done in March this year in South Africa and it was successful
