Learn German with our street interviews: This episode is about Germany's dependence on Russian gas. The war against Ukraine has shown that the gas supply in Germany is by no means secure. We ask people on the street if they are afraid of gas shortages, expensive energy prices and a cold winter without heating.

I am surprised to see the reaction of most people here. I am working for a major German energy company which is also one of the largest gas supplier in Europe. We are in a major crisis now. These people have no idea what they are talking about. The gas prices are increasing 4-5 times compared to past and they have to pay it next year. I am sure they will start complaining once they see the bill.

Most people don't think about the big picture though, they weren't taught to do so. And also most people don't know details in areas outside their field, so in this case regular people on the streets probably don't know where gas is even used, outside some basic surface knowledge.

to be honest I don't understand from where "4-5 times" more goes. 1. Oil prices have +20% more comparing to 2021. No "times" and they will go down as Saud Arabi increase production as greed. 2. Gas prices on TTF (liquid gas in Netherlands terminal), yes make 2 times from September 2021(but not 4-5). But we should understand that Germany and most of the EU countries buys gas mostly with fixed long term contracts. So these price of course exist in whole gas delivering structure, but are not 100%.

Gas prices affect electricity prices also. The energy companies that control the renewables only slightly outbid the gas generated electricity to rake huge profits regardless of the way lower cost of production. It also creates a perverse incentive for undersuplying to keep the prices high by shutting down some wind generation when there is oversupply to keep the prices high. Renewables implementation is flawed unreliable and highly dependent on gas. Oil prices and weak Euro is also a big driver to the current Inflation. Yes you can use a bicycle but you can't plow the fields or transport goods with it.

Wow...just wow...it's not just gas prices, people! The whole supply chain relies on transportation and fuel, rising gas prices means everything rises - everything from groceries to building supplies and non food item and services. People can't afford the gas it takes to get to work, so they quit their job for something closer. Businesses can't handle the rising costs, so they jack up their prices just to be able to survive. Many won't be able to survive, which means more jobs lost, fewer people able to afford the skyrocketing prices. And not everyone is able to work, even a minimum wage job. Some people are on a fixed, minimum income, or have very little at all to live off. Who will step up and help them out? Somehow I doubt most of the unconcerned people interviewed will.

Let's also remember that 40 to 50 % of the Nitrogen atoms in a human body has been pulled out from the N2 molecules in the air using what is known as Haber-Bosch-process, which uses natural gas to produce Nitrogen fertilizer (simplified explanation, there are multiple steps). So each time you see a group of Germans, you can imagine which ones would survive if we could only produce half as much food. Maybe half would survive, maybe two thirds. But the overall point is this: Food you buy at the shop is a consequence of natural gas.

Pretty logical, you first worry if you are going to be ok and if you are, then you can see if there is capacity for others. It is also how the question was phrased. I am not super scared of gas prices. We anyway usually dont heat up much during the winter (about 14´to 16C) and we are frugal, young and healthy. So I dont expect I will be comfortable or that I will save as much as I normally would but I will probably live. But I can also understand that people with low incomes or wiht small kids, elderly, sick people...they will need help and if I can I will. But of course I first worry about my own household

People like the guy in the white tanktop have moral culpability for all the aggression happening against Ukraine currently, since so many people in Germany think the way he thinks, and by using their strategy called Ritt durch die Instanzen since the 1970 onwards, they have managed to turn these delusions into government policy.

Also höhere Gaspreise bedeuten höhere Strompreise, höhere Lebensmittelpreise. Everybody sells diamonds. There are diamonds everywhere."

I moved to Europe from Canada and one of my hopes was to see a lot more economic/social/international literacy and understanding among people. For example, I expected after this war began, that people would question how come their governments had left the entire gas infrastructure to a Russian a supplier (Gazprom) all this time, and how come despite the ongoing crisis between Ukraine and Russia prior to the war, these governments didn't think twice about going on with whatever the Russian influenced businesses told them to about gas. Instead, all I have seen among my EU peeps is thinking NATO is the savior (!!) and, then this type of ignorant thinking "Oh I don't use gas so I'm not worried", "Oh I don't care about Russians". Yes, it's been more than 7 decades since WWII was over but, I assume people are taught some history lessons in primary school!!!? They heard stories from their parents/grandparents? NA JA!!!

I disagree very strongly with what he said. I had already written a comment directly on the video when I came across your comment, so I hope it is OK that I also paste what I wrote here: The guy in the white tanktop is completely delusional in what he says from 2:42 onwards. If Germany had not been implementing their atomausstieg, Germany and the rest of Europe would not have been dependent on Russia for energy, and Russia would have not started their illegal war of aggression against Ukraine. People like the guy in the white tanktop have moral culpability for all the aggression happening against Ukraine currently, since so many people in Germany think the way he thinks, and by using their strategy called Ritt durch die Instanzen since the 1970 onwards, they have managed to turn these delusions into government policy.
That was without a doubt one of the most bizarre things I've ever watched on KZread. The complete apathy and lack of understanding of consequences of high gas prices was simply unbelievable. Dear people. Gazprom has been cutting gas supplies to Europe since forever. Look up what´s been happening in other years. It´s not because the Russian owners of the gas industry (which are NOT common Russian folk) decided to "punish" someone, are you insane? We´re talking billions of dollars. It doesn´t work this way. Profit is above all, otherwise you lose competition. No. Cuts in energy, and cuts in any other industry happen for one reason only - RELATIVE OVERPRODUCTION. More gas has been produced than can be bought by the main consumers, the masses. Also, you have to take into account factory closures - production sector is a massive consumer of energy. All of these things led to the formation of "surpluses" of energy. So now the standard measure comes - cutting the production of energy. Gazprom is reducing production of gas atm. In June they cut it 30%. There are no shortages. They are just compensating their losses by raising the price.

@EasyGerman

What about tankless water heaters? Was surprised nobody brought these up. They're electric and you only pay for water you use. They do come at an upfront cost, but it might be cheaper for the government to create an incentive for landlords and homeowners to install those now than to wait for the winter and have to pay higher prices to help people out and/or deal with the costs of gas shut offs. Plus, at least in theory, electrifying water heating could help prepare the infrastructure for a more sustainable electricity-focused future. Thank you for these timely videos!!

They are lucky russia still holding back its counter sanction with regards to gas supply. If russia really retaliated with sanction since march, i dont know where germany will get its energy. @@easyhobo That is a myth. Used nuclear fuel decays rapidly in radioactivity. In reality, you can handle it without shielding after about 300 years. The regulations around handling material, however, requires it to be stored for longer than this. The reason for this is that the main source of radioactivity in the interval _from_ around 300 years _until_ around 245,000 years is Plutonium. Plutonium does not exist naturally on Earth, except in trace amounts. After about 245,000 years, unconsumed Uranium takes over as the main source of radioactivity. At this point the material has a similar level of radioactivity as the Uranium mine from which the Uranium was originally obtained, so it essentially becomes part of the natural background radiation after this length of time. There has been a scientific debate about whether one should worry about the more intense, yet shorter-lasting, radiation that comes from Plutonium (compared to Uranium). In the early days of studies of nuclear toxicity, a model called LNT was developed. This stands for "Linear, No Threshold". It basically says that the biological damage from radiation is _proportional_ to the amount of radiation. This seems intuitive, but we must try to _prove_ it or _disprove_ it. It is now clear that the LNT model is _falsified_ and there are in fact thresholds for safe radiation. However, regulators still base their requirements on the LNT model, because of an extreme interpretation of the "precautionary principle" (Vorsorgeprinzip): Since the LNT leads to stricter requirements, we keep using the LNT, even though the model itself is false. But the scientific fact is that Plutonium is not particularly dangerous. You can handle Plutonium with your bare hands, as indeed some people have. One man in the US has even carried some Plutonium in his body his whole life, and managed to live to an old age with no ill effects. The thing that _is_ dangerous is the more intense, more short-lived isotopes. The longest-lived isotopes that still are sufficiently radioactive to be really harmful are Strontium-90 and Caesium-137, which both decay away after around 300 years. This is the reason why I mentioned 300 years in the first paragraph.
These people are delusional
We need more permaculture, diverse trees, green walls and roofs, catch rain in rain gardens and swales everywhere. Berms and swales on contour needs to be done everywhere to catch rain. Forests need to be diversified. Homes need to be super-insulated with hempcrete and straw bale techniques. More bikeways, bike highways bridges and tunnels. Less food waste from grocery stores. They are always throwing out good food at the end of the day. It should be put on discount at the end of the day or given away. We have to help other countries be more efficient and self-sufficient and to prevent a refugee crisis and future wars. Help your brother and neighbour, otherwise you're slitting your own throat.
