As for the voice actor of the nameless hero: He died in fact in 2017 as result of a serious car crash. While the majority of Risen 3's story seems to be very much developed until that, they had to hastily rewrite the plot and even made it to give the original hero some farewell lines in Risen 3, as he was quite literally moving on from this life. Which for me, is the most beautiful, yet chilling moment in any Piranha Bytes game, for he seems to have recorded the lines from his deathbed.

Serves them right, I say. They had plenty of opportunity to term the ship around, but they kept making stupid decisions. All they really needed to do was remake Gothic 3 and move forward with a proper Gothic 4.

@@xenon333 Embracer (the owner of PB and of other companies) shut down several studios because it made stupid management decisions. They even closed a studio which was busy making a new Deus Ex game. Btw they couldn't make a remake of g3 because THQ was the one who took the wheel on the Gothic series. So while PB was busy with the Elex series, THQ Barcelona (which eventually became Alkimia Interactive) started the development of GR. It's similar with what Bethesda did with ID software's ips which were assigned to different studios. ID was put in charge of the Doom franchise, Saber on the Quake franchise, MachineGames on the wolfenstein series, and then Avalanche Studios on the Rage series.

​@@eldiablogmic6760 It wasn't Embracer's fault. Elex 2 was a flop in every way and that sunk the company. Pirahna Bytes was in a downward spiral arguably since Gothic 3 and certainly after Risen 1. Elex was something of a return to form, if barely and that was that. Gothic 1 & 2 were lightning in a bottle that I sincerely doubt even the original dev team could replicate today. It was a miracle PB lasted as long as they did.

I need to write a comment so I remember to check this video later on because you, REALLY *GET* Piranha Bytes' games, why some are greatness and some aren't in the same way I see them as that.

Congrats on finishing this PB journey! It was a great one. I watched all of the videos and even rewatched many of them. And yes, F for Piranha Bytes. Your games might be rough, but without some of those (Gothic 1/2 mainly) I won’t be the guy I am today.

You have this rare talent of expressing exactly how i feel about the games i played, even if i never fully grasped why certain things are annoying me or what it is, that´s bothering me. And the opposite as well. I just bought Stardew Valley because of your review, because i know that you basically appreciate the same aspects of a game as I do. Hello Nick, excellent review as always! But somehow sad considering the news heard about PB's fate the last few days.. In any way, I was curious if you ever feel like playing and reviewing Greedfall. 17th century fantasy RPG, exactly like second and third Risen. It does many things good, especially when it comes to RPG elements, story and voice acting. However, its combat and general mechanics are heavily limited by the low budget and restrictive engine. I would love to hear your thoughts about it.

It's disappointing that even Piranha Bytes can't make a good Gothic successor. Let's hope the remake isn't complete garbage and that other studios can manage to create something similar - after more than 20 years!!!

Yay! Another long video about these games. I barely remember anything about Risen 2 & 3. Only ever played them once or twice, prefer to replay the first instead. It's my favorite in the Risen series. The thing that made me sort of sad when it came to the series, is that they are more standalone games rather then an actual trilogy. Will be nice to refresh things with Risen 3 too.

Wish I could play Risen 3 Titan Lords on my Series X.

One of the main problems since Risen 1 for PB was (😭) that the team wanted to increase the size of the game just by increasing map size or adding more maps. This backfired starting with Risen 2 when you play a pirate themed game with no pirating. Risen 3 is the same in that regard.

Im a bit more favorable to risen3. I really enjoy the checklist type of design when everything is handcrafted and unique and finite. The Booze questline was pretty standout as it is like an alternate version of the Brogar questline from Risen which was that games best part imo. Worming your way into a community and sabotaging/usurping the imposing head figure is 100% what Piranha bytes accels at backed up by their generally gritty tone, npc reactivity and player disempowerment

I'm starting to think Risen 3 would benefit a lot from a non-completionist approach. Focus on one of the 3 main islands (based on chosen faction), skipping most of the content on the other 2. Should eliminate most of the tedium, maybe even help a little with the lack of difficulty. I'll try it next time I play.

you know i kinda wished piranha bytes did something different after the gothic games, the risen franchies for the most part seemed like retreading old ground. Elex did show some promies however it seems that Pirhana bytes was really only able to make one type of game.

I still managed to struggle a bit with the game, at least early on trying to explore everything anyways.

Its an easy game but its easy like castlevania SoTN is easy. All your options are fun to use and it always feels better to get stronger

Risen 3 is the only one that I haven’t finished. I would consider the 1st Risen game the only good game out of the 3

One of the most disappointing things about this game is how poorly handled were the islands from Risen 2. They just removed half of Tacarigua and almost entirety of Antigua territory.

This game just proved that this developer are hacks. Gothic 1 and 2 get weird amounts of praise and they are guilty of everything wrong with risen 3. Gothic 1 and 2 fans praise those games issues by calling it "design". PB are hack, this game is no better or worse than their previous titles. Pb fans are only second to fromsoft hardcore fans as far as being asshats

I would say that the expectations are so big because Gothic 1 and 2 are really good games. They have good stories, player progression, open worlds, quests and so on. They make you feel like you are a part of the game. So you would expect from PB to do games close to those Gothics or even better. Everytime, they started with an interesting game (Risen1, Elex 1) and then they fked up the sequels. I enjoyed Risen 1, but I didn't even try to play Risen 2 or 3. Starting with a medieval game and then continue with pirates? Elex 1 was good, but Elex 2 was boring. it felt like a Elex1+ game.
