    Unfortunately Rise is one of those shows where it was publicly dislike for trying things differently. Which is ridiculous considering people liked the 1980s show which is more kid appealing then this show will ever be. Therfore leading people to neglect the really great aspects that Rise really did have to offer. Thankfully we have the movie now which is now critically and publicly liked, while amplifying what the show offered 10x in every aspect.

    Honestly, I was never much of a TMNT fan until this came out. Something about the animation, relationships, aesthetics, and goofiness just really brought out what TMNT was missing. Splinter I believe has improved the most, since in this version, he is both a father and a sensei.

    You wanna know why people seem to love the original serie and hate rottmnt? It's because of a power that can be a blessing and a curse. Nostalgia. Most people saw the 80's ninja turtles as a kid, and let's be honest here, a kid can be relatively pretty fucking dumb and like everything without having a proper and defined opinion on it. Nowadays, if those fans watched the series again this nostalgia power would probably fade out after a season or two and then they'll probably give a second chance to rottmnt, admit it is not that bad, even pretty good. Or maybe they'll just stay stuck in their childhood, refusing to let go of that idolized past they had, and telling that rottmnt sucks for no fucking reason. If you don't like rottmnt, it's fine, just don't hate it because it's different from what you saw before.

    @@TheOddMan1997 exactly. I at first wasn't a fan of Rise because of the nostalgia of the 2012 version, but now after re-watching both I can say that Rise is far superior under many aspects. I like the fact that they decided to change a few of the characters' traits, like Splinter not being very present and a parental figure that you know it's there but almost never interacts with his kids. He cares about them but at the same time sort of neglects them too and I think it also makes it more realistic

    Not to be pretentious, but I’m in my senior year of college after studying Art/Animation for about 5 years. And I will tell you right now that this animation is by no means bad. It may not be your personal preference, which is valid, but it isn’t bad. This is honestly some of the most dynamic and expressive animation I’ve seen in a TV cartoon in a long time. And the character designs, while different from the original designs by quite a lot, fit the characters’ personalities, add a creative spin on them by basing them off of specific turtle breeds, and create distinctions between them apart from just the color of their masks or very slight skin color variations. Like…if you want to look at it from a purely technical standpoint it checks all the boxes. 1. Fluid expressive animation - yes 2. Easily readable art style - yes 3. Character designs that tell something about who a character is and are simple enough to be easily animated but also complex enough to be appealing to look at - yes

    Thank you for acknowledging that people can have opinions on animation too. Perception differs from person to person, right? Personally, I can see it's obviously really good animation because of course it is, but there are certain choices in animation that are also up to one's preference and I don't necessarily like some of the stylistic choices in this show. Example: the transitions in fast movements (such as flips) where the character is supposed to look like a blob/ball/whatever deformed shape fits are kind of too obvious (I haven't checked but maybe it's just that the exposition is slightly too long? or it could be the spacing being so far in between that it doesn't work as an illusion anymore) which creates an unnatural effect that in my opinion looks unflattering in martial art scenes. Another example: to me, some of the action scenes are hard to follow at times, a little too fast (some of the spacing is pretty wild, making the movement less legible than I would like) and flashy. All of this is purely subjective, therefore people may have different opinions on this subject. That being said, let me reiterate that I don't think the animation is bad at all, it's just that the style doesn't always fit what I think a show about ninjas (or any martial artists) should look like. I suppose overall it goes pretty well with this art style though and also character acting is very expressive which is nice and, again, works well with this fun, cartoony style.

    This is what happens when people don't understand the difference between animation and character design. They likely mean "this show has bad character design" (which I whole heartedly disagree with). These designs provide personality into the characters. No other iteration does good with this. The closest we got was raph having rips in his mask and a crack on his shell. And Mikey having large blue eyes and freckles to represent his youth and purity. Tha's the closest we've got. This iteration expresses the characters through their character designs alone.

    As a long time fan of TMNT I feel like Rise is probably one of the better interpretations, albeit they swapped Leo and Raph since in the series Raph is the leader but it makes sense in that version as Raph is the oldest and one of the most responsible (More or less not including Donnie). In the series, Raph doesn’t have anger issues or at least aren’t as bad. He shows genuine love for them all and he overall seems like a good pick for leader in this iteration. Leo taking a more careless fun role yet also still getting to be the main character is different from most other versions as usually he is depicted as the more responsible one of the group as well as being the oldest. It’s nice to see the series flips this and takes a new route. Donnie. Yeah, He’s still himself. Maybe a little more confident than other versions but it definitely feels like him. Now Mikey, he didn’t change much. He’s still the youngest, loves pizza and is always the more light-hearted one. One thing I love about Mikey in rise is Doctor Delicate touch. I find it hilarious how he acts like an angel but when Doctor Delicate Touch arrive he isn’t holding back on giving you the raw and hurtful truth. Casey’s lore is a little changed, I can’t remember this very well but if I remember correctly, at least in the 2012 version, He always knew the turtles, in rise he doesn’t come in till the movie, after being sent back in time by future Mikey, he had to stop the Krang to save everyone. Now, I haven’t finished the series yet but from what happened in the movie I suppose he was left in that timeline, so, yeah- April O Neil. Yeah, she’s a lot more badass in Rise, I love her as a character and she’s just all around epic. Splinter is different as well, you kinda start hating him but he grows on you the more you watch the show. I love Rise and the new take it has on TMNT and their family dynamic.

The show also came way too soon after the end of the beloved 2012 series, which ended a year before that. I agree though, the animation is STELLAR and the character designs are off the damn charts. I love it so much! :D❤

I remember watching the first episode and actually getting a laugh from it, so I decided to check out the rest. While I personally prefer other variations of Leo and Splinter specifically, they still work really well and Leo had some amazing lines. If there's ever another series, I hope it combines a couple elements from rise and the classics. And like everyone else is saying, THESE SCENES HAVE NO REASON BEING SO GOOD BUT I LOVE IT.

    I mean, I can tell they use “cheats” that are a little more obvious than other shows but they use those cheats to their advantage in their style. GREAT Animation isn’t cheap or easy, so it’s interesting when companies find an appealing way to get around it.

    @@aniisammy not smear frames. Like I noticed in the early episodes they would hold a lot of key poses for characters for fast movement. It’s less fluid, but barely noticeable because the animation is so fast. I’m not condoning it, just something I noticed.

  • @Kiku91

    Another example is in mystic library when characters were taken away by the bats they would just be in a frozen position with just lip flap animation, and bobbing the image like a flash animation. Though I think that was done for comedy and it made me laugh

  • @Kiku91

    @Kiku91

    Жыл бұрын

    @@phlpcockrell also man, I missed your comment for ages. Like aniissami said, smear frames are essential and make animation more fluid. In 3-D they use an effect called motion blur which has a similar effect. I actually find myself slowing down clips on KZread to really capture some movement. There are lots of moments where animation is reused for a sequence or characters holding key poses, designs super simplified from distance or perspective shots, or there is possibly some 3-D rigging with the images. But the animation is so fast, you don’t really pick up on it, or rather you aren’t supposed to. Animation works like an optical illusion, you are supposed to see these images moving so quickly and vividly, they look like they are alive. Animation teams, especially for tv work have insanely crunched working hours so they have to make everything work. They can’t take the same amount of time for super fluid movement like movies (the rottmnt movie is so smooth by comparison) but still want to sell you the illusion of living characters. The series also has a lot of anime influence, not just by the references but some of the way the characters move as well. Cheats aren’t bad if supplemented with other factors, and in tv departments they are needed.

    Really wish that I never shrugged this series off tbh. I never hated it or thought it was bad per say, I was just a fan of the 2012 and 2012 only so I thought I wouldn't like it nearly as much and I had a bunch of other series on my watchlist. People said the movie was good, so I decided to watch the series first and OH MY GOD. I love the turtle's personalities? I love that they're so visually distinct??? I love how instead of starting at the baseline of what we expect their personalities to be, they slowly evolve into the turtles we expect! While still never losing their charm. Leo apparently is seen to have to be the responsible stoic type so having him be a realistic kid whos annoying and giving him more flaws like his massive ego and laziness is peak character writing! Having Leo become Leader so suddenly and randomly forces him to own up to more responsibility and see things from Raph's point of view and how it pays off in the movie is just *chefs kiss* Raph changed SO MUCH from the 2012 version (and what people expect of him ig) But making him his own character because of the different circumstances he's been placed within the brother dynamic is kinda amazing. Of course the older brother to these chaos children would end up feeling like he needed to be so responsible and almost like a mother hen. His Hotheaded nature rears it's head in the movie too, fighting with Leo about how he leads. EXCEPT WE ACTUALLY FEEL FOR HIM? AND IT DOESNT COME OFF AS ANNOYING BECAUSE RAPH IS RIGHT? Unfortunately I have less to say about Mikey and Donny, but that's not a bad thing. They really leveled out into their ultimate forms I think. Both of them are insanely hilarious and hilariously insane. Donnie is by far my fav, but that is just not even an original take. Mikey is like the ultimate mikey, here for a good time but still the heart of their team. (when raph isn't trying to steal that title at least lmao.) Sorry for rambling I am just so in love with this series it's crazy how its already surpassed 2012. (in my freshly cut onion at least.) I really hope nick doesn't let this die because idiots like me didn't give it a fair chance.
