@@naw. In short, (since I could write an essay) as someone that grew up in this time, I saw a lot of myself in this film. It triggered an attitude in me to get things done. It made me finally start working on my debut film, that I am still working on now, instead of just saying & thinking, "Man, I want to make movies! I'll get to it eventually". It triggered movement in me. It triggered the thought of not letting trauma & the abuse I went through define me or get to me. That I need to keep moving. That what I've been around can affect me in both the positive & the negative. That I need to keep creating. @@user-im1yw2jv4n worst thing is telling someone to watch it and they are not suddenly obsessed with the search of the ethereal beauty in dramatic scenes of life
I went to a theater to watch this work when I was a University student. The story was so tragically outstanding, beautiful, and cruel so I couldn't stop crying while watching. I desired two things simultaneously during watching, one is "Finish quickly, it's so painful to watch" and "Don't stop eternally, because it has beautiful catharsis".
The more I think about this film the more brilliant I believe it to be. It's amazing how different this movie is from Edward Yang's masterpiece A Brighter Summer Day (made 10 years earlier), which shares a similar vision of youthful alienation, yet both are essential. In his empathetic view of youth, Shunji Iwai is the Nicholas Ray of the 21st Century.
