Ok ok I got it the guy he lost his friends cuz they changed and he’s scared that he’s going to loose everything until he meets the woman and in the relationships she finds out that she’s destined for the screen like she’s gonna be an actress so he keeps trying to hold on and him pulling her back is her getting yanked in the music video and she keeps trying to run to the “riptide”/ her career And now that he’s lost everyone he’s running from himself now because he’s realized that his fears are hurting her but he doesn’t want her to be taken away by the dark side which is money, greed, and all the stuff in the world of a famous person.

I thought that this line was in reference to their jealousy. The first lines tell us about his fears any references "pretty girls". (Like maybe he was shy and his friends we're more active on the dating scene.) Then he says all his friends are turning green and "Your The Magician's assistant in their dreams" like he's found this beautiful girl and hooked up with her and they seem to be a great fit. He wants to marry her... "I wanna be your left-handed man". His desire to marry her is a testament to her beauty and class and all those things characteristic of the girl you want to take home to Mom. So all of the sudden he has this great girl And his friends are jealous

The funny thing is that Vance actually said he knows “Riptide” is a confusing combination of words and images, and that’s it’s a hard to follow the meaning lol
