My journey, how did I get here?
Over 30 years ago I started taking notice of music cards, and when everyone else was collecting sports cards and other non-sports cards, I was enamored with this very specialized segment of the non-sports card market. This all started before the internet was a thing. Computers only started to become usable for the average person with the release of Windows 95. eBay and Facebook weren’t even a thing yet.
Most of my collecting was done at local card shows, flea markets and garage sales, with a few very small lucky finds along the way. I enjoyed this hobby pretty much on a solo basis, since none of my collector friends ever recognized music cards as “a thing.” Nonetheless, the fire was always in my belly.
Years later as Craigslist and eBay came into play, I was able to gain a bit more access to illusive finds both nationally and internationally. This opened up a whole new way of collecting that was not available to me prior, and I dove in.
For over 30 years this growing collection has been hibernating in boxes with very little interaction from me. Always a buyer, never a seller. The collection grew.
Things changed for me a little in 2021 / 2022, when in an effort to interact more with my collection and collecting in general, I decided to start bringing some of my music card collection out of hibernation and start buying, selling and trading at local and not so local shows. I can’t tell you how many times I have watched someone stare at my showcases full of music cards and either say to themselves, to me or to the person they are with, “I didn’t even know this was a thing!”
I’m excited to bring you all along as I step up my collecting and learn how to navigate the world of KZread at the same time. Thank you for being here with me for my Collecting Music Cards video series, I truly hope you get something out of it and I hope it inspires you to start a collection of your own.
I have no idea what the future holds for my collecting hobby, I only know what has already happened. Sit back and enjoy Collecting Music Cards and all the in between!

Right when I first got heavily into Kiss around my 12th birthday September '78. Buying these over the counter at the town stationary store was like copping crack cocaine! Kiss stuff was taboo contraband back then. "Omg, he has Kiss cards! Ship him off to reform school!"

Aucoin was Bill Aucoin. Original Kiss Manager. Him and his boyfriend Sean Delaney were the masterminds behind a lot of the early Kiss marketing and stage shows. He single handedly funded the Kiss machine early on when they were not making money, at least his American Express did.

As a young KISS fanatic, I was psyched to collect these cards when they hit the shelves. But it soon became apparent that it was really a crappy collection - they would literally use what appeared to be the same shots (with maybe a slight difference) on multiple cards. So you'd have Paul playing guitar, then another one with the same pose but his head tilted a little differently. This is bc practically the entire set of photos look like they came from the same concert/photo shoot. You'd think they could have thrown in some shots of them in a limo, at an appearance, etc. Anything to mix it up and make it interesting. It was a cheap cash grab, like much of their merchandising at the time.

I agree with your point on the photos. The images for this particular Kiss set could have been a lot better. Nonetheless, the whole bubble gum card experience of your favorite band doesn't get diminished by the photos. There are phenomenal shots of Kiss throughout the years. I agree with you, Aucoin just didn't get real creative with the photos here. Many sets are like this. Often when the cards aren't solely beautiful for their art and photography, they are beautiful for what they represent... That band, that time, the smell of the gum. Spending paper route money to get a few more packs and hiding them in the shoebox when you got home. I look forward to ripping boxes and packs of many products as time goes on, so people can experience these sets without having to hunt down boxes and packs themself. I appreciate your comments not only about what the cards represent to you personally, but also on the cards themself from a collectability standpoint. This is a channel dedicated to collecting music cards, so card condition and finding these cards comes into play here, just as much as our love for the artists and groups.

@@cardboardportfolio Sounds good! Enjoy. PS - I realize the "similar image on multiple cards" thing is not unique to this set. It was common in entertainment cards I collected. I remember collecting Charlie's Angels cards, and it felt like all 60 cards in the set were taken from 2 episodes. But, I didn't mind, because, hey . . . Charlie's Angels! 😄

Cool video. I remember my parents purchasing these cards for me when I was 8 years old in 1978. I remember opening them and the smell of that gum. I ended up with a lot of duplicate cards. I'm surprised you didn't have any doubles out of those 3 packs.

I have the complete first and second series. I remember when I got them in the 80's the cards had a strong waxy scent to them. I had no KISS concert videos back then, so when I would listen to the Alive albums I would stare at those cards and the images seemed to come alive with the music.

I remember buying an unopened wax box of KISS cards back in 1978. My girlfriend at the time got mad at me for getting them instead of spending the money on weed. I was able to make 2 complete sets out of the box. I do still have them, but I did open them the same day I bought them. I'm sure glad I didn't listen to my girlfriend.

Ah, yes. The late seventies… Buster Brown shoes, navy blue corduroy pants, mustard yellow long-sleeved turtleneck and a massive hair helmet that would make 2012 Justin Bieber blush. I can still remember putting the KISS puzzle together on my school desk. I kept my cards in a Star Wars lunchbox. They were always stacked in order and secured with a rubber band. In my fourth grade class, there was a kid named Mike who had all four of the KISS dolls. He used to pop off their heads, stick them onto the tips of his fingers and sing “Rock N Roll All Nite”. Good times, indeed.

Back in 4th grade a classmate knew I was kiss krazy so one day he brought a pack of kiss cards to school. Back then the convenience stores only had partial boxes, but eventually I completed both sets back then. A few years ago I bought 4 complete boxes of series 1 and 2 complete boxes of series 2. It took me 35 out of 36 packs to make a set from series 1 and 28 packs from series 2.

Donruss was notroious with the miscuts... mainly the outer edge of the puzzle namely the cards with print on the back of them, not the actual puzzle pieces, would almost always be miscut. If you can find anything even close to high 7 then good luck. in all my years collecting, I have 1 9.5 peter criss info card. I have yet to see a 10 graded. Centering was not a priority for these cards. Okay, this was the 70's but still. I have the original set still that i opened in the 70's... beat all to hell, but still the actual set i put together as a kid spending my allowance and lawn mowing money to buy thepacks. Bought the marvel blood comic at the same store as the cards.... good times.

The pack price is somewhat out of whack, but that's OK. There are a lot of products like this one, none of the cards are really chase cards, they are all about the same value unless you are dealing with the variations. And although the break on the pack isn't actually worth the cost of the pack, I'll still rip a pack like this just for the thrill of tearing into a pack that should have been opened back when I was a teenager. It is also always my best shot at getting pristine cards. It doesn't always have to make sense for me to do it!

I saw these in a comic store in Guelph, Ontario in the late 80s or early 90s when my dad took me there. I thought they were a new set so I bought a handful of packets. On the way out of the store I opened one up and popped the gum into my mouth and started chewing. That's when I realized that they were at least a decade old! I spat that dried, stale crumbly gum out on the sidewalk and we had a good laugh about it. Blech 🤢!

Thanks for the input. A friend of mine in Australia recently provided me with an image of a "NEW SERIES" box that features the 21 "Corrected Version" cards that have the Eric Carr's. A few details for those interested... The 1st series box had red sides and the pack price was 15¢. The pack wrappers are blue. The 2nd Series box has blue sides, the pack price is 15¢ and the box says "2nd Series" in big pink and white letters across the top of the front. The pack wrappers on 2nd Series are red. The "NEW SERIES" box has red sides, the pack price is 20¢ and the box says "NEW SERIES" in big yellow block letters across the bottom of the front. I'm fairly certain the pack wrapper is blue, but is a bit darker than series 1 blue wrappers. I will show the "NEW SERIES" box image in the video I post for my 2nd Series Kiss Rip.

I don't know of any instances where the factory boxes came out of the cases sealed. They were usually stacked 16 per case and had no cellophane seal to them. I am assuming yours was sealed later by BBCE or someone else that certified the box before shrink wrapping it. Currently, USA 1st series boxes sell in the $600 range.
