You need to plant turnips or radishes, theyll help with breaking up the soil..for the summer ,id plant buckwheat..it'll save the soils moisture ,prevent weeds ,then add lots of green manure to the soil..increase your organic material, it'll hold more moisture too

I have planted some buckwheat in the past couple years! It did ok, nothing spectacular!

Step one.. wait until your dust bowl dry soil gets rained on to till. Trying to till dry dirt is like pi$$ing in the wind. Step 2... build up the nutrients (bio mass) in your soil by planting things like buckwheat, winter rye, brassicas, etc. these plants will not only build your soil, they’ll help break up that hard pan, compacted layer of dirt. In time, you’ll get better dirt. P.s. rule of thumb.. if you’re dirt is blowing away in the breeze.. stop tilling! Lol

Great words of wisdom, and yes been planting some cereal rye and brassicas, been looking to add chicory too, we hit a bad dry spell last summer and didn’t rain for like a month an a half...I had some resin in the forecast so decided to try and bust up the soil so I could get some decent germination with the rain...but didn’t rain lol!!

.you disc that when the soil is wet ,you'll just gum up that disc..I've got a groundhog max, put in several food plots with it..actually works better when the soil is on the drier side

If you haven't already, you need to check out Jason Snavely of Drop Tine Seed Co. and he also does Drop-Tine podcast that is pretty amazing. Mostly about food plots and soil health.. He started his seed company from messing around with food plot blends that contain a bunch of different plants that work together to address the micro nutrients of your soil. No till or fertilizer... . Great stuff.

@@swostillwateroutdoors I planted his Fall Reload last year and it did really well. It is pricey, but worth it. I am stuck working in Mexico this year, so it is probably going to be cereal grain this year for me. I find the work that goes into the land management aspect as much, or more, entertaining than the actual hunt.

@@Miguel_Travels Nice!! I like the idea of having high diversity like that, I am sure the deer enjoy a lot of variety too! Cant go wrong with the cereal grains, and yes, totally agree!! Working the land really is satisfying!

Planted some buckwheat this spring! Hit a bit of a drought so a lot of it didn’t germinate but there is def some growing!

Why not plant buckwheat

I actually tried buckwheat the summer before, had pretty poor germination, so tried something different!

Chicory and brassicas might break up your top layer

Buckwheat during the summer will naturally add nitrogen and become nutrients for your soil in the fall food plots
