  • @RiskOfBaer

    @RiskOfBaer

    As a person who has been a victim of this exact situation: this is the sad reality of it unfortunately. It's even worse when you KNOW something is a bad idea, your coworkers know it's a bad idea, and you actually try to convince people above you about it to avoid a train crash. And nobody listens, or their heads are too far up their own behinds to see past their own points of view and notice. Been there too. Me and one other guy tried for a good half a year to steer away the company in a different direction before eventually giving up and just doing what they wanted us to do. And by that I really mean we tried: we created business cases with actual data, did market research on what we were trying to do, actually managed to convince one of the executives at a company, and presented all of those things to other execs and even the CEO at one occasion. But nope, they all thought they knew better because in their own circles they all talked about how all of this is great and will be fantastic. Completely out of touch with the actual people on the ground. You see this mentality way too often, the whole "Metaverse" nonsense is probably the biggest profile example of this very thing that happened relatively recently. Nobody actually wanted this, but every CEO has convinced themselves about how fantastic idea it is and how it's the future by talking to the people from their own echochamber who think the exact same things... Well, at least you get to enjoy some schadenfreude when it all eventually crashes, and you get to say "I told you so" with a smug grin as the company is forced to fire people ot stay afloat. You included.

    Legend's point about Hyenas probably being cancelled ages ago makes total sense in hindsight. The Hyenas YT channel has been dark for almost a month (not that the were huge posters to begin with), their twitter page that used to regularly post once every couple of days has been silent for almost a week and the huge long winded marketing campaign they had going on suddenly died in the arse two weeks ago, with barely any marketing to be seen since then. It almost feels like SEGA pulled the plug and then the Hyenas team said "wait wait wait just let us do some marketing. It'll pull through honest." And then two weeks ago SEGA finally said "Enough. Your marketing failed. We're canning the game."

    Alien Isolation is an excellent game, but it was also kind of a niche title- didn't sell enough units for Sega to consider it as a success, since the audience for horror games isn't as big as the major looter shooters and there's less recurring spending when you can't ram in some microtransactions and in game currencies. Excellent game, considered a flop by the publisher since they're only in it for the revenue.

Since although they're certainly taking in more per sale, the lower number of sales due to that higher price could still mean they're making less overall or even just roughly the same amount as before. Meaning that the new price gouging phase they're going through might not be gaining them that much in exchange for the large amounts of good will they've been loosing.

    There's another reason. Rare to see, but it does happen. Look at the history of the Everquest IP, and the reason for the canning of EQ3. The devs assembled the whole game (it had been worked on in a modular fashion), and called it 'anti-fun'. With that statement, EQ3 died on the spot, after years of fairly high profile development and many millions of dollars.

Millions of humans have dedicated billions of hours of effort, trillions of calories of energy, all on efforts that resulted in predictable failure. People have died building walls that didn't keep the enemies away, spent their lives working on chemistry formulas that lead nowhere, designed countless inventions that work incredibly well but didn't have market appeal, leading to destitution. I'm sorry for the Hyenas devs, all I can hope is that they didn't put too much of their heart and soul into what was always going to be a silly for-profit venture, not a product that was probably ever intended to be "good" or worth spending time on.

Every update that CA puts out on bugfixing the game gets hundreds and hundreds of comments wishing for the game to die. If CA decides to abandon the project, they're honestly just giving the vocal part of the community what they've been begging for for the past months. The people spamming hostile verbal abuse against CA instead of providing calm and reasonable feedback need to drop the pretense that they ever wanted the game to get better, because in reality they're just happy to have found an excuse to vent all of their daily rage and frustrations and think it's more fun to burn shit short term than to wait for things to improve. It is sad and pathetic that the content creators didn't take responsibility for whipping the community into a hostile frenzy sooner. We should all want the game to be as good as it can be, but instead every upvoted comment just wants to see shit burn.

The problems those publishers and studios have are not automatically fixed by throwing MS money at them, because money doesn't 100% fix creative bancruptcy. Bethesda for example comes accross like a football player way past his prime still getting a ton of money from a Saudi club. Most gaming companies feed and thrive on nostalgia these days.

    It was both and political. SEGA was intending to increase prices anyway, the reason for this was they need to start making money for the Rovio/angry birds deal. Another was Sega japan personally invested in Hyenas separate from the usual budget CA gets. CA went with it and set the price because they thought the DLC could save Hyenas as the reason SEGA started spending a lot on CA was to do with TW consistent success. They were hoping the DLC would sway the decision and prove they still can deliver. If we can sell TW DLC this successfully imagine how successful HYENAS can be, kinda thing. Three things killed that game. DLC didnt sell well. The lack of gamer interest. The rovio deal has upset costs so they need to cutback in order to save money and HYENAS was the biggest game production outside SEGA japan and CA the largest Sega european studio. Because the entire consumer division made less money everything is getting cut in order to please the stock holders and the market who was against SEGA buying rovio in the first place.

    The true reason this game got cancelled was to do with Rovio. SEGA spent a lot on buying Rovio apparently against the share holders wishes and in order to make them happy they cutting back on european operations because new titles like COH 3 didn't perform well and that studio got hit with layoffs and restructuring. Since Creative Assembly is the biggest Sega studio in europe they were going to bare the brunt of the cutbacks. If SEGA wasn't investing in various projects that are very expensive like the upcoming super game projects, the casino resort they planning in japan, i dont think this game would have been cancelled. The alpha and beta tests was unusual for SEGA to be so public about which most likely indicates that this was CA's attempt to show SEGA japan that there will be customers for the game. When historically SEGA and their divisions have never been open to public opinion during game development. They would just test the game inhouse, show previews to the public and then release it. So clearly Sega japan was looking into if this game was worth being saved or not because it is the closest one finished. People who are celebrating think this is going to be normal like it was before think again, the TW pricing was probably to do with the Rovio situation. They were trying to make a quick profit margin in order to save HYENAS because Sega was going to cancel it, and because Total War always performed well for SEGA which was the reason SEGA invested more money for CA to grow and make other games in the first place, CA thought if the DLC did exceptionally well it could help in their favor. So it wasn't to do with resources being taken away from TW. Also the report said restructure of the entire europe division which means cutbacks from across the board. For those who don't know when SEGA closed the deal to buy Rovio, Sega Sammy borrowed the money from a Japanese bank to make the purchase. Now they have to pay back that money with interest and because the european side isnt making as much buck outside Football manager and TW and that the money was allocated for Sega europe to buy rovio in the first place they were going to get hit especially with the recent market environment. I suspect that its not just cancelled games and job losses that will happen but the possibility of studios that sega purchased may be closed down or sold off. The report said the consumer division which means SEGA's entire games division from japan america and europe made less profit. HYENAS was costing a lot in development and licenses used in the game didn't help, ingame advertising in the game that was meant to happen also was a factor as that could have helped had that been secured. Anyway this isn't just about Hyenas its a regional corporate shake up. This is a case of SEGA overspending and exceeding profit that the games and other stuff under the consumer division made. SEGA buying Angry Birds basically killed HYENAS and other titles.

    Thanks for this, I've always suspected that a lot of the bad decisions coming from CA are actually the result of SEGA pulling the strings. They have a particular way of doing business, remember what they did to Totalbiscuit? He never did get an apology either.

    Hi Legend, I have some insight into the situation at CA. Staff, or at least some staff, were only told TODAY (28th sept) about the cancellation of Hyenas. Your points about CA knowing in advance may not be completely accurate. This is obviously an incredibly crappy thing for the dev teams and brand personnel that were doing their jobs. Please update or let people know that many at the company had NO priory knowledge of this before it went public Thanks, love the content etc x

    This adds a lot of info for understanding why the DLC price went up so much and why Pharaoh is not labeled as aSaga game. Only hope is that they move a lot of people into the teams working on the next historical game and maybe Total War 40K.
