Fun fact for anyone reading this The Slits lead singer was stabbed in the thigh before by some guy who was pissed off that she was gaining fame. She went to the hospital, got some stitches and ig.i understand right went back to play the show that night. Some badass shit right there.

in all fairness, a lot of the scene back then was DIY, as no professional photographers would dare shoot a punk show. therefore a lot of talented, yet wannabe photogs grabbed cheap equipment and used black and white film as it was easier to produce and enlarge.

Please tell me from your experience and reading of critical gender studies what you mean. And, no, things you learned on the internet don’t count. Bratmobile and Bikini Kill were badass back in the day. I loved seeing their shows. They were still punk and deadly serious but they had a sense of humor and tongue in cheek quality that a lot of the late '80s and early '90s punk bands just didn't have. Where a lot of the punk from that era got overly serious the riot grrl bands were a reminder that rocking out was supposed to be fun too. It was a shame they received so much shade from people that proclaimed themselves "real punk rock". Punk is a voice for the outsider, the oppressed, the other. Yet the scene never saw the irony of ostracizing women with the same aesthetic beliefs and philosophies of their male counterparts.

  • @johnmcmahon5225

    @johnmcmahon5225

    5 жыл бұрын

Most of the fans and performers of punk rock through the years have been pretty solidly from the white middle class, who are hardly "the oppressed". Yeah, Bad Brains, but they were an exception rather than the rule. The basic ethos of punk is "Screw society, I am doing my own thing.", and that attitude will make anyone professing it a willing "outsider". Punk was never about changing anyone's mind, which is a hippy thing. I would not classify any band like Bikini Kill that felt the need to issue a manifesto as a "fun" band, by the way. Also, I have never seen or heard of any women being turned away from a punk show, or ostracized as performers. Most of the Punk scene as performers, record buyers, or concert goers are guys, just like the Metal scene, the Jazz scene, and the Bluegrass scene.

I never saw any of that either and I've been active in the scenes since all ages HxC shows of the early 90s all the way to the third wave of Noise Rock of the 2010s. I always assumed that what I was experiencing was a result of the Riot Grrls' change for good but now that I have a bit more perspective, it's not like the 80s or 70s weren't filled with celebrated subversive female icons and I have a hard time imagining anybody putting up with their being abused, even back then. I'd like to hear what Lydia Lunch, Diamanda Galas, Yasuko Onuki, Kim Gordon, Siouxsie Sioux, Poly Styrene, Belinda Butcher, Patti Smith, Kim Deal, Blondie e.t.c have to say about it...

And it was Kathleen Hanna who inspired "Smells like Tenn Spirit" too !! She jokingly sprayed "Kurt smells like teen spirit" on Kurt Cobain's apartment walls after getting drunk with a bunch of friends. what she meant was that he smelled of Vail's deodorant that the two women were joking about earlier and he only knew about that after the song came out cuz he initially thought it was her praising his ideas after the previous night's discussion and Kathleen didn't tell him the truth when he asked for her permission to use the phrase.

4 years too late, I understand. lol This is my big problem with the video too, Lorna Doom, Exene, Tam from Sacrilege, and Wendy O Williams as well. Feels disingenious. Lots of women were very involved in various punk scenes. Not to say there wasn't awful shit that happened, but to say it was ALL sexist AND ALL against women before the lame riot grrl stuff happened is just a bold faced lie. 90% of the Riot Grrl bands are failed punk musicians that couldn't make anything of note so they just went off of their politics. I'll take X over Bikini Kill over any day of the week.

Note how the video focuses on the 'zines. They were cheap and slapped together, but they were a real physical object that are a reflection of the time period. A punk collective near me has a library of them. Tweets, Facebook, and blog posts will always be out there, but they will not age as well as a historical document as these paper 'zines.

Hello Polyphonic. I've been enjoying your videos for some time now, and I am particularly pleased that you chose to touch on the continuing influence on pop culture of punk rock via this essay on the Riot Grrrl subculture, which you call "the last stand of the punk rock movement" - which is one point of your video that I feel begs exception. I was deeply involved in punk rock in the 1990s and my experience in the movement was deeply and primarily shaped by the DIY ethos that had become a common thread in most forms of the genre by that time. We formed our bands, wrote our zines, booked our own shows and tours, recorded and pressed our own records, and so on. We filled fire halls all over PA, OH, and NY state with sweaty, writhing, pissed off youth that came together because they were desperately in need of community - and we did all of this before the internet was even a thing. The legacy of the bands that garnered attention and shocked the masses with their punk rock in the 1970s and 80s is the DIY ethos and the willingness to accept any others that are willing to stand together for the common cause. Since the common cause is transmutable, ever-changing, and since there will ALWAYS be youth searching for acceptance and people to stand together with, punk rock will ALWAYS be a tool with which the angry, intelligent, and MOTIVATED youth create their own sense of identity and a community of their own in which they can feel they truly belong.

A lot of people don't realize that back then, emo was actually cool. It had very little to do with cutting oneself or even really being emotional. The music was emotional for sure and that's what it was. Emotional music. All the really good emo bands that were around back then faded into obscurity though. There's the Get Up Kids and they're okay but all the really great emo bands are all just gone. It's like a thing that came and went and left it's residue behind. I'm fairly certain that the emos of today have very little understanding of what emo is or was supposed to be. The only reason I know anything about it at all is because there's this really cool little high school radio station around where I live and I remember hearing some really incredible music in the 90's.

The problem is that you mentioned mainstream rock and pop punk acts and not Punk bands. Those groups were very good, and influential in their own ways, but the Punk Scene wasn't listening to Blondie and The Runaways-- those acts were looking for radio play and tour dates. Punk bands fought against exposure like that because they were against the system to begin with. They played in small dive bars and in theaters that catered to their anti-authoritarian, anti-establishment messages and behavior. Riot Grrrl acts didn't aim to break into the mainstream, only to change the Punk Scene that they felt sidelined and diminished them despite their interest and contributions.

  • @Wisconsin222

Again its hard to determine this because well The Sex Pistols were considered as punk as one could get at one point of their career even though at the same time they are also as mainstream as can be. I've been on social media pages where some people actually considered the Sex Pistols as a boy band, I don't though. So with that said its hard to pick out Mainstream Punk and "Punk Punk" (as I like to call it because even some hardcore punk bands had some mainstream success).

Sleater-Kinney not only became an important figure in Seattle's riot grrrrl scene, but a group whose music transcended the scene itself. They kept the riot grrrrl spirit alive not only be reinventing their sound, but doing it while living through the alternative rock scene of the 00s, personal turmoil, and the Iraq war. All this and they've continued to maintain their relevancy to rock music as a whole, and not just as an important riot grrrrl band. They've ended up as, in my opinion, one of the greatest bands of all time.

Psy Op. Do you know that she was in the Army? Did you know her boyfriend Kris Kristofferson left a teaching job as Col. in the Army at Westpoint? The entier 60's music scene was full of people who did Military Intelligence, or Military Brats of all stripes. Do you even know Jim Morrisions dad started the Vietnam War?

I love the documentary but in the introduction you refer to the “21st Century” but are referring to the 20th Century. Confusing as I wondered if the subject is going to be about the legacy or the movement.

I think "redefined" is a bit of an overstatement. Riot Grrrl was great or fucking terrible depending on the band but it was just punk. There wasn't like a sea-change in the basic structure of the music or anything. It's not like they made fucking ukuleles suddenly acceptable or desirable in punk music or something equally outlandish.

This video is so awesome and really provides a ton of information about the movement I didn't know before. I'm actually writing a paper on riot grrrl for university and was wondering if anyone knows where to find the quotes from zines, particularly for the quotes from Sniffin' Glue and Jigsaw. I'm aware they were around long before the internet but thought they could be really interesting sources to use and I'd love to have a look at the rest of the zine as well. Thanks in advance!

In all fairness, there are some words that don't come off very well pronunciation wise. Hell, even I wonder if I'm saying Ask or Ass tbh haha. All depends on the tone and possibly accent wise but even so, This was still a pretty fun video on a movement I must admit that I notice too much on.

I think possibly Polyphonic is pronouncing the word "womyn" which is a feminist spelling of the gender, denying the usage of the suffix "man" or "men" because woman means of-man. Not 100% sure but that was my take and I came to the comments to see what people were thinking.

+Goldhawk I highly doubt that; Not once have I heard that term used before, and if he was indeed using it, I assume he would likely have included an explanation, either after the first usage or in the description. Because he does have a bit of an odd voice/general pronounciation, I would bet on him just mispronouncing "women".

Goldhawk I’m not saying you created the term but that’s honestly retarded. It doesn’t mean of man, it means of mankind. As in huMANs. It has nothing to do with the male sex
