Rio Antirrio Bridge - Bridging the Gap

Ғылым және технология

The Rio--Antirrio bridge (Greek: Γέφυρα Ρίου-Αντιρρίου), officially the Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge after the statesman who first envisaged it, is the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge. It crosses the Gulf of Corinth near Patras, linking the town of Rio on the Peloponnese to Antirrio on mainland Greece by road.
The 2880 m long bridge dramatically improves access to and from the Peloponnese, which could previously be reached only by ferry or via the isthmus of Corinth in the east. Its width is 28 m - it has two vehicle lanes per direction, an emergency lane and a pedestrian walkway. Its five-span four-pylon cable-stayed portion of length 2252 m is the world's second longest cable-stayed deck; only the deck of the Millau Viaduct in southern France is longer at 2460 m. However, as the latter is also supported by bearings at the pylons apart from cable stays, the Rio-Antirrio bridge deck might be considered the longest cable-stayed "suspended" deck.
This bridge is widely considered to be an engineering masterpiece, owing to several solutions applied to span the difficult site. These difficulties include deep water, insecure materials for foundations, seismic activity, the probability of tsunamis, and the expansion of the Gulf of Corinth due to plate tectonics.

I remember. I was small kid when they built up the bridge. My father is from small village 50km away called Vardas and even from there bridge can be seen

Wonderful piece of engineering but a very costly white elephant in my opinion. Not only built understandably to withstand earthquakes but also high enough to allow large ships to pass under. What large ships? Ships, even ferry boats cannot proceed east towards Athens due to the Corinth Canal and thus they go no further than Patras. On the north side of the Gulf of Corinth, there are no large populated towns, so just who is going to use the bridge? Look on Google Earth and at the time the photo was taken, there are only 17 vehicles heading towards Patras and not a single one heading north. 800 million Euros, spent in a country that has one financial crisis after another does not make sense to me. By the way, I love Greece and have had more than 40 holidays there over the years and will be back in the Peloponnese again in September.

Butch 78 smartass ..first of all it is not allowed big ships to cross gulf by the international navy law and i think 50m height is quite enough ..secondly the bridge connects Peloponese with western Greece ,not a small town on the other side but a bundge of cities and transportation ..very crucial, more than 61.000.000 million vechiles in 15 years have cross the bridge. So try to be aware before writing bullshits. P.S. We don't need your empathy, we don't care if you love Greece you are not welcome don't come ever again.
