The only teas I rinse are pu'erh and stuff I've gotten from vendors I know nothing about. I've gotten into an expensive habit of buying and drinking mostly high quality leaves and it feels like I'm wasting flavor and aroma--and money!--if I rinse.

I've been enjoying the smell of dry leaves in a warmed vessel for a little while now, and I realized I must have picked this up from you! I think it is a much more interesting smell than the rinsed leaves.

I agree, I prefer the dry leaves in a warm vessel.

It would be interesting to see the report from a study of the amount of insecticide left on dry tea leaves. I suspect it would be quite low. If insecticide is commonly left on tea leaves there would be a higher incidence of illness associated with tea drinking.

It also depends on roasting, which greatly affect pesticide residue. Entering tea session with this type of mentality is offputting

I usually rinse Oolong, and Mao Cha /Pu Ehr. To smell the leaves I pre heat the pot, then rinse and smell those leaves again. Then what I like to do is drinking the rinse that I poured in a cup or a Gong Da Bei when it has cooled down. I don't rinse Hong Cha though, as it looses some aroma in my opinion 😁

I am in the habit of rinsing the tea so the leaves become wet. I guess it takes a few minutes for the hard dry leaves to absorb the water and become soft. I let the wet leaves sit for a few minutes before I pour my first cup. I think they need some time to hydrate. I have never heard anyone talk about the hydration of tea leaves before brewing the first cup. This is why I rinse my tea. What do you think about this?

Hi Scott, I have not done that but I will try both ways and see what differences I find. Some teachers talk about consistent heat when we brew tea, so some people might not like the idea of waiting that long. The temperature cools down. But I will get back to you later.
