    Regarding 19:14 - It is an often-uttered error that in the 2nd age only Allatar and Pallando were in Middle-earth. Gandalf also stayed in Middle-earth - twice before his known stay in Middle-earth in the 3rd age. This follows from two late notes by Tolkien (he kept revising the lore). His first sojourn was around the year 1050 of the 1st age, there he (as Olorin) accompanied the Vala Orome and led the newly awakened elves from Lake Cuivienen to Valinor. Then he was - according to a late note from Tolkien - again in Middle-earth (Tolkien did not give an exact time) and traveled through Eriador, Gondor and Rhovanion, where he learned a lot about the people there and other beings on the great river, but also taught wisdom (!) - so it's clear: with the quotes ("when in doubt, Elanor Brandyfoot - always follow your nose") it sure is Gandalf!

    @@TopnessReactions Well, true... in the beginning I think you were going with the fallen comet Istar as Sauron. But that's only because the show is REALLY good at their misdirections, plotting and pacing. The whole sigil thing is really brilliant IMO. You caught onto that really fast. I think when you edited episode 1! 👏 I think one of the best examples of the great ideas + plotting that the shows had is watching the show back and seeing things through Halbrand/Sauron eyes. What comes off as entirely one way when not knowing it was Sauron becomes something totally different. Again, you were already on top of that misdirection. 👏It was when Galadriel reveals Sauron killed her brother. And Halbrand says he's sorry. At first, it's a "sorry" that's said for hearing bad news of a friend. But, no, this is a "sorry" that he actually did kill or have to kill her brother. It's so great! LOL. You are so good, I would think you might be Fizban.😁 You must read a lot (or just read the books I've read). As, I'm not sure if those books are "popular" anymore. It would be incredible to see Tanis, Raist and company in a movie - done well. Like LOTR. Altho, I'm still mad at Kit, and will probably always be, at what she did to one of the company. I'm not sure I want to see that.

    I loved this episode and season as a whole, and really appreciate your reactions and analysis. It’s such a pleasure to come across another deep lore reader who has the openness to take this story as it’s told, and seek out the correspondences and subtleties tying it back to Tolkien’s deeper themes. IMO RoP is doing a better job of it than any adaptation to date.

    I have to say that they are challenging my understanding of the lore, for sure. However, contrary to most perhaps, I think they are hitting way closer to the mark than we give them credit for. To say I might have the lore but I missed the meaning of it somewhat describes what I mean. I think if I challenged my understanding of it balanced against what they have presented, I might come to the conclusion that they have assembled the top experts. Loved it for this reason!

  • @pyropulseIXXI

    @pyropulseIXXI

    Жыл бұрын

    @@TopnessReactions They haven't assembled any 'top experts,' and RoP destroys the lore multiple times in every episode. This should be obvious to anyone that has read the Silmarillion and LOTR. I'm not saying the show cannot be good, but if anyone is claiming it follows the lore or respects Tolkien, then that is objectively false. I don't think this matters, though, as the show should just be its own thing. They only have the rights to the LOTR appendices, so that alone is going to cause massive lore contradictions with the Silmarillion. For one, the 3 elven rings were forged last, Annatar was with the elves for centuries forging the lesser rings, as lesser arts into ring crafting Gandalf didn't Lucifer fall into middle Earth and showed up well after the rings were already made, since Cirdan gave Gandalf Nenya when he got off the boat. Ar-Pharazon was never his title or name, as he took the old style of Tar and went with Tar-Palantir. This alone is a massive insult to the lore, because the change has significant meaning This is but a super small sample of everything they mess up, and most of it insult Tolkien's work, as they clearly don't understand it

    I don't think the dweller is a maiar. There is precedence in the lore for non-maiar sorcerers. 1) The mouth of Sauron was a black numenorian and learned sorcery from Sauron. 2) The witch king of Angmar was a powerful human sorcerer before he was corrupted. 3) Some of the Nazgul were also described as human sorcerers. 4) Saruman suspected that the necromancer (Sauron) in Dol Dulgur was a human sorcerer 6) The blue wizards were corrupted in the east and were said to set up cults of sorcerers I think the most likely scenario here is that the three are human sorcerers that are part of some sort of cult that worshipped Morgoth.

    Technically, the Ainur are not the only ones capable of using magic, but the type of magic they have displayed, like shape shifting and such is not something humans are capable of. So they "cultists" are either maiar of some form serving Morgoths (and now his heir) or humans who have been imbued with his power by Morgoth (which would seem strange given that he had plenty of more powerful servants to choose from - but theoretically possible).

  • @TopnessReactions

    @TopnessReactions

    Жыл бұрын

    They appeared for a moment as wraiths, which do have the potential for magic obviously. However, the magic used in Tolkien has always been very subtle and more likened to an almost background occurrence. Shooting fire from one’s hands isn’t even something the dark lord does.

  • @Thedeepseanomad

    @Thedeepseanomad

    @@TopnessReactions It is true that magic in Tolkiens work often is more subtile in an instrumental way. But Gandalf conjured fire on more than one occasion in the books and projects radiant energy towards orcs, killing them. But of course, he keeps it to a minimum as he is forbidden to use his powers to dominate, only to aid others. Elves can also use magic, although most of it is related to them crafting objects. However, Finrod, for example, used songs of power against Sauron and Galadriel hardly used her physical might to "throw down the walls of Dul Goldur" and "Laying its pits bare".

    Gotta say, even though it was blatantly obvious, and I hoped against it, I was surprisingly very satisfied with the Sauron reveal. The Stranger's rebirth among Hobbits alone makes me believe he's Olorin/Gandalf. It's not an accurate choice, sure, but I don't mind it, since we're hard compressing the timeline of everything. That said, it all might just be nods to the Istari we are most familar with, and he may get blue robes at some point. The Blue Wizards are almost entirely a blank canvas, so it will be interesting to see where they go with it. With that said, can he really be a Blue if they want him to eventually converge stories and join the main driving conflicts in the west? As they don't go west. I'll believe it's an earlier incarnation of Olorin, until he gives/is given a name, or chooses what colour his actual robes are to suggest otherwise. It also comes down to what Amazon has the rights to, they only have the Lord of the Rings and the Appendices, which is a very huge deal that not many consider. They can't talk about the First Age much, and that pisses a lot of people off who hate watch this, yet they can't without getting into a legal bind. I went into this show with zero expectations and really enjoyed it. It's not mind-blowing amazing top five show of the decade TV, but I'm thoroughly entertained and along for the ride, and looking forward to the future seasons. My biggest complaint is that it was only eight episodes.

Our position, "Exsurge Tolkien" (published 25 March 22, and available for review on our channel), remains the most comprehensive analysis (and foreshadowed) of the Anti-Tolkien agenda of the ROP enterprise as declared by the showrunner's own words. We now see what the corporate machine theyocracy has wrought on Professor Tolkien's legacy: heresy, catastrophe, and disaster. Even the most ardent ROP supporters have weighed the show on the scales and found it wanting, "Auta i lóme" and "Aurë entuluva."

    I am not as huge of a fan of lotr movies and its universe as I am of star wars, so I thought I could easily enjoy this show since there was less of a chance for me to be taken aback by some of the narrative and storytale changes that were made. (In my opinion the way Tolkin wrote was at some points extremely capturing and quite boring, which is exactly how the movies were, very epic and a little stale at many different parts). But after completing the show I thought that this was at its bottom an alternate universe and storytelling of lotr. It feels like the exact opposite of the force awakens which completely tried to copy the story of A new hope. Instead, this show I think tries too hard to not fit in the story and the narrative of the original movies and that makes it not as enjoyable as it could be. Also some of the acting for its budget is subpar in my opinion and it makes it more clear that some characters were made and some actors were cast either too quickly or for divesrity purposes which ruins the immersion that the show offers at some points. Whoever this could also be due to bad editing and writing so I am not that sure that the actors are the only ones to blame. I have no problem with what ethnicity or gender the actor is, as long as they embody the character they are playing and know how to deliver a scene without making it about them. Some great examples of that from star wars was mace windu, leia, finn, live action ahsoka and fennec shand. In conclusion, this show feels rushed and mid quality in writing like Kenobi and with lack of vision from it's creators. However the story is still intersting and saveable. P.S. Please someone recast Galadriel to a better actress, I don't even care anymore if she is of a completely different gender or ethnicity, just someone who can convey some emotions and please change her script to not end up like the Almighty Rey Skywalker. Also subtract some of the villainous traits that she has and make her more mature and likeable like the original movies, because the mental aging of elves isn't like the yoda's species, so she should have grown to a mature adult like 4950 years earlier. #RECAST_ORLANDO_BLOOM_AS_GALADRIEL_AT_THIS_POINT_SMH
