Hi, old English drummer here. Regarding Zyn Cymbals, there were at least three types or grades. Zyn, 2 star Super Zyn and Five Star Super Zyn. The 5 Star Super Zyn were the same quality level as Avedis Zildjian (approximately) with the others being cheaper. I have heard that some of the 2 Star were great cymbals and I owned the low level Zyn myself as a youngster which sounded pretty good actually but were a little fragile and busted quickly. Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) recently sold his old Zyn cymbals at auction and claimed that he used them live and on the early Sabbath albums (go figure that one out). He didn`t specify which kind they were but I reckon he must have meant the 2 or 5 star which were the stronger instruments. Online I found a discussion with close up pictures about Ringos` possible hi-hat cymbal combination in the early days. The debate was about the bottom cymbal being either an Ajax or some kind of Zyn paired with possibly an Avedis top. Ringos` hi-hat sound with the Beatles definitely has a certain "dirt" to it whether open or closed that I have always thought must be due to such a pairing of different types (and qualities) of cymbals. So, as an experiment I put an old thick Ajax bottom under a vintage Avedis top and tried it. To me it sounds very close. Enjoy.

Ringo truly seems like a genuinely lovely man. That is awesome that you were blessed with the opportunity to meet him. I have had the opportunity (by shear luck) of meeting Julien Lennon and Mike McCartney at shows (behind the scene and one on one). Again, shear luck being at the right place at the right time. Lovely experience!

I grew up with a VERY similar story to Gary's. I studied everything Ringo LONG BEFORE the internet! It was a passion, a love. Fast forward MANY years, I make an inquiry with a very well respected drum restorer and reach out to him to recover my set in BOP. He sends me a bunch of literature, samples etc. In that packet is the story of the gentleman who owned Ringo's Ed Sullivan bass drum head of which he had made a custom display for. It stated the gentleman lived near me. How can I meet this guy! It would be so amazing for me being a super passionate Beatles gear nut! I am NOT the type to track down and bother people. I respect their privacy. A long time passes when one day, after a church service, a gentleman I knew walked up to me and said "I heard you were a huge Beatles fan" (everyone who knew anything about me knew I WAS a super Beatle nut). So, he proceeds and says "Hey, my neighbor is supposed to be some really big Beatle collector".......my heart sank. No way. Yep, it was THAT gentleman (whom I never discuss out of respect for his privacy). Long story short, my friend talks to him and arranges an opportunity to go to his home and meet with him. I was in heaven. It was not a matter of another Beatles fan going "wow", it was a matter of a life long dream of being so close to the actual Beatles gear/"stuff" that left me literally in awe. It was a dream come true. I have met with him on a few occasions but never asked to see the collection again. I was just grateful for the opportunity to handle such Beatles things (yes, he had this jacket-Ringo's Abbey Road jacket amongst other amazing things). I hope to meet with him again in the near future to just chat. It is a wonderful time just sharing the same passion with someone that has that too. I am so grateful for being blessed with that day and thankful to maintain a friendship with this gentleman who truly is an amazing guy. I've had the opportunity to help some drummers pull together a correct Ringo kit due to my knowledge, right down to the exact placement of the Swivomatic plates based on which year they have. It's a great joy and I've spent countless hours searching for and obtaining the correct gear for these fans. It's a passion, not labor.....well, it is a labor of love and it gives me so much joy to talk to these drummers and collectors and help them understand the minute details that make their set a true Ringo set. Do I wish I was in Gary's shoes? Yes and no. I am not jealous of Gary, but so thankful to hear his story. It is mine, minus actually working with Ringo. I get it. I love this. I had the chance to play drums in a band that was offered a major record contract but chose to pursue my goal of going into cancer research as it had plagued my family so much. After 32 years dedicating myself to help find a cure, I am now retired and enjoying focusing on my passion more again. It is wonderful hearing stories shared like this and I am grateful to Gary for sharing his experience and passion! If you haven't done so, I HIGHLY recommend buying the book he authored, "Beats and Threads" through Julien's. It is a true treasure. I bought a few copies of the Beats & Threads: Fashion of a Beatle (Signed Clamshell Edition & Video) as soon as it came out. It was like getting THE bible of Ringo's gear and "threads". Amazing........Peace and Love all..........

I love how it says 'Earwig' instead of 'Ludwig' on the bass drum of Ringo's equivalent in the Monty Python 'The Rutles' movie 😄 I'd once had a Beatles poster (from one of my Sister's teenie mags) in which it had actually only said 'Lu' on the bass drum; Now I know why! 😄 And this was great to watch and listen to! 😃👍 Thank you both! 😊

Gonna end the Bernard Purdie controversy... ATCO hired Purdie to sweeten the drum tracks on the album "The Amazing Beatles & Other Great English Group Sounds" Clarion 601. The 10 tracks include the 3 Tony Sheridan tunes that Atlantic had copyright, plus 7 tracks by the "Swallows" The songs covered by the Swallows were: She Loves You, I Want to Hold your hand, From Me to You, Please Please Me, I'm telling you now, Ain't she sweet and I wanna be your man. Who knows where that tape came from?? Copies are for sale on eBay.

My first drum was a red sparkle snare drum, plus 12" cymbal from "Santa"[actually spiegel catalog, where my family bought a lot of things],i sold the drum for some reason to my neighbor for $15 ,i guess it was when i got my first set, a MIJ white pearl set, 20-12-16,matching marine pearl snare,i was overwhelmed when my dad said yes when i asked him if i could have it, a neighbor a couple of blocks away had it for sale for $50,which was way way too much for me to have, i guess i was about 13...a couple of years later, i was at the local teen hangout, and i got to know a couple of the bands playing there, and i bought a ludwig super classic set from a guy, silver sparkle for $150,of my own money, when we went to pick it up he had covered it with some aztec print contact paper, so i did what i did with all my stuff-SPRAY PAINTED all the drums black,so they matched, sold the lot when i went to junior college.the connection with Ringo is that i have a Yamaha Rydeen snare that im in the process of painting the interior white and covering it with some black marble contact paper-the closest to Ringo's Jazz Festival that i'm gonna get!!! PEACE, MITT

Why were Ringo's toms mounted so strangely on the maple Hollywood kit? The toms are on a stand and the stand is in FRONT of the bass drum. How in hades did he even reach the toms?

So Ringo's Zyn cymbal probably came with his premiere kit when he bought it. It was common for low end kits to come with cymbals in the 1960s. I had a Sears kit and it came with cymbals (which were junk, but still something to hit). Having played drums for 50 years, I realize today that, ironically, the drums shells themselves were very good. Slingerland knockoffs (right down to the stick-saver hoops). I've always wondered who produced them. We bought them in 1968 from a Sears Outlet, meaning they were old, unsold stock. Probably produced in the 1964-1967 range.

I love Bernard Purdie's drumming, but since that interview where he stated that he drummed on Beatles tracks, you are the one other voice to cast doubt on that claim. Ringo has his own voice.

U did not mention the the mystery Ludwig White Marine Pearl kit that Ringo performed on for a very short time prior to performing on The Ed Sullivan Show . I have an old color Beatle card showing Ringo playing behind this particular set of drums . Perhaps this set was ordered by mistake or something . I'd like u to follow up on this drum kit while the boys rehearsed on the set of The Sullivan Show .

Bernard Purdie Played drums on the 1978 Robert Stigwood, Bee Gees Sgt Pepper Soundttack. He did not play with the Beatles. He never met Brian Epstein. Robert Stigwood worked at NEMS with Brian Epsyein. He left and started his own management company. He was the Bee Gees Long Time Manager. Bernard is convinced to this day that Robert Stigwood was Brian Epstein. It's absolutely not true. Check out the liner notes on the Bee Gees Sgt Pepper Soundtack. Bernard Purdie. I wonder if Purdie ever regrets making that statement. He's had a great career, but that one time he shot off his mouth has overshadowed his whole career. Instead of being known as the guy who played with Steely Dan, Dizzy Gillespie, and James Brown, the first thing you think of when you hear his name is: He's the guy who claimed he played on the Beatles' albums.

If Bernard played anything Beatles, it would not be a good credit to him. Here me out. Bernard is a groove master. Ringo is a song player. Both great at what they do, but it's like comparing signatures. If BP played on the Beatles stuff, I'm sure it was Ringo on the Aretha and Steely Dan stuff.

Disgusting to continue the cruel assassination of Peter best. Peter is a professional musician that got back stabbed and screwed by John. Is it just that difficult to say perhaps the boys weren’t chummy with Peter for whatever reason. I find Peter account credible. For what it is worth, George Martin wanted Ringo fired and replaced shortly after signing. So the idea that Ringo was necessarily better than Peter was here say at best. Ringo is a great drummer, his work speak for itself. He seems a very nice man.
