This is lounge singing Shiina Ringo (no mole), which is still great, but nothing compared to 19-22 year old Shiina. When she started, Shiina Ringo really pushed her voice, probably beyond what humans are meant to produce. Then around 2002 she dramatically changed her singing style, either because of damage or she wanted to preserve her voice. Unfortunately her first two albums are not available in the U.S. and most of the videos from this time are not available to U.S. youtube viewers, so American Shiina Ringo fans usually only know the Tokyo Jihen and latter versions of Shiina (which is still great). I lived in Japan when Shiina Ringo exploded onto the Japanese music scene in 1998. The office building I worked in was next to a tv station and I was so fortunate to get tickets to hear prime Shiina perform on a variety show. The sounds that came out of that woman's body I've never experienced before or since. Shiina Ringo's vocal/dramatic tour de force is probably Tsumi to Batsu 罪と罰. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dap-zc-me7WsdNo.html is an early concert performance (still has her mole) in all her vocal glory. kzread.info/dash/bejne/h5-r0cxwaZCpcc4.html is a later variety show performance where she is obviously struggling. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hpp_s7GaZqethLA.html is a much less intense jazz version of the song. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iJ2lsqSMhdebaco.html is a relatively recent performance in the original dramatic style but where she replaces her vocal gymnastics with big band horns. All versions are great in their own way.

Mid-00s was where I would draw the line, if pushed, between the old and the new Ringo voice. It's like 2000-2004 she was otherworldly, able to push hard as she wanted anywhere top to bottom without a care and I never heard her go out of tune except for when literally screaming or doing something for effect. I think 2014 might've been where she struggled the most, and then since then she has been on an upward trajectory vocally all in all.

'Lounge singing' being known for it's big belted notes lol. Not quite as bad as those that call every kind of jazz (and sometimes some Latin American styles) she composes 'big band'.

Love your reaction! I was there for this live performance! It was insane! When she came out with her 1st single, I was shocked and threaten by her talent as a same age Japanese female musician. I am glad that her music is in my life for past 25 years.

Most versatile female composer of all time, capable of pop, rock, jazz, punk, acid jazz, electronic, samba, tango and more. Imagine being able to compose and perform stuff like kzread.info/dash/bejne/iaCXw8SLnb3Tm6g.html as naturally and authentically as composing and performing kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYyB28aMmdLUn7Q.html She's just an absurd talent.

I figure I should ask, do you know where I can find her “gekokyujyo xctasy” live show where it’s like a hospital theme? I saw clips of it before it was nuked from KZread. Especially if the piece, “Correct City”/“Tadashii Machi”. I’ve been looking for that specific version from that live show but I can’t find it anymore.

Hisaishi did a waltz or two, basically, and there's a section in this that's a waltz lol. That's precisely all there is in this piece of music that's Ghibli-like.

You just found 1% of charming of Ringo. She is 100x better than you can imagine. Ringo and Tokyo Jihen (she is the vocal) are the most talented musician I have ever seen. Just watch her live from 2000 to 2012, best of the best...

Among the popular songs of hers, "罪と罰 Sins and punishments" is the best. (I realizes someone had alreadysuggested, though) Songs like "本能 Instinct" or "歌舞伎町の女王 Queen of Kabuki town" are also the good ones. Song composes in her early carriers are dark and sexy and somewhat makes me feels like they are written by literal girl. BTW, Kabuki town is an famous and largest entertainment district and nothing to do with original Kabuki. : )

Written, Composed and Performed by Shiina Ringo. And that's the case w/ most of her stuff... she also does soundtracks and top10 hits for others. Material she doesn't perform or sing. Shiina is just ridiculous.
