Can anyone tell me what could happen if someone enters a ringing chamber with the bell in the "up" position say they tried to ring the bell?

Hi Junior, if someone were to pull the rope slightly and let go, then the rope would just start flying in all directions. If they wouldn't let go, they would end up on the ceiling... and if they pulled too hard, then this might happen: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lHhm0Nt8nJzVnLA.html

The convention is that bells should be left in the safe “down” position. In my “home” tower they’re so heavy they’re usually left up between Thursday practice and Sunday ringing. There’s a sign saying the bells are up and the ringing chamber is locked because if an uninitiated person pulled a rope there’d be out of control rope flying everywhere. When you start ringing a bell up you should put your hands on the Sally and tail in the position as though you’re about to start ringing and check it’s actually down, indicated by being possible to gently swing it.

I ring at 3 towers regularly. There’s probably 100 towers within 20 miles of where I live. In Eastern England there’s far more bells than people proficient to ring them.
