Ringing of the three vespers bells in Verona Cathedral
The bell tower of Verona Cathedral is one of the most famous in Italy, as there is still a team of twenty bellringers ringing the bells during festive occasions. The enormous tower was rebuilt after the disastrous 12th century earthquake that destroyed the city's buildings. The base of the tower measures more than eleven metres per side, with a masonry thickness of three metres. The octagonal belfry was completed 1925, making the structure 75 metres high. The new nine-bell concert was built in 1931; the nine bells became 11 in 2020, making it the heaviest concert in the diocese.
On the first floor of the tower is a museum with antique bells, three of which are mounted on a beautiful antique wooden frame, enhancing the beauty of the medieval bronze. The bells rang because I had to make the video, so the ringing was because they were happy to have me as a guest, being an expert on history.
- Minor bell added and cast in 1803 (musical note B)
- Bell mezzana added and cast in 1703 (musical note A)
- Original major bell cast in 1384 (musical note F sharp)
In the 4th century, many churches were built in Verona, including two cathedrals next to each other and almost twins. The second cathedral was demolished and rebuilt in the early 9th century, becoming the city's main building. The beautiful building collapsed like all the others following the largest earthquake ever recorded in the area, which also destroyed buildings in Milan. The cathedral was rebuilt in Romanesque style and inaugurated in 1187 by the pope. The structure has remained the same, despite the many Gothic and Baroque additions of later times.
