    It's more than that. In the current form, it's the root cause of the decline that would eventually lead Malaysia to a failed state. I'm not against a quota system as it's a key factor in the social political stability. However the current quota system must be revamped to place only maximum 20% of resources under the quota system whereas the balance 80% should be placed under a fully merit based system. For the poor performance of MYR hasn't the World Bank Advisor for Malaysia provided the reasons for the rot? If I'm not wrong the answers are high debts including those created by Najib 1MDB fiasco.

    In a way I do agree with both of you that the reason for the falling of the Malaysian Ringgit is due to the high interest rates in the US and other factors also. I however is an advocate of a different view as I believe that the Malaysian economy's fundamentals also need to be strengthen as well. You see the Malaysian economy is also a very export oriented economy, most of these products are produced in factories in Malaysia. The biggest problem about this is that to produce these products, we have to import majority of the raw materials from overseas. This ultimately gives a big chunk of the revenue to anther country. As a double jeopardy, majority of the workers in these factories are also non-Malaysians as well. If you understand the mentality of these foreign workers, then you will know that a majority of the money earned by them is sent home to the countries of their origin like Bangladesh, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, India, Pakistan and Cambodia. Therefore if we are able to strengthen these fundamentals and these money earned not leaked back to another country then Malaysia will be in a much better position.

    This is a hot potato issue. 12 million stakeholders as contributors are concerned. Most contributors expected about 6% dvd as EPF had good returns for 2022. One noticeable feature is that shariah compliant savings improved from 4.7 to 5.2 % vs 0.1% for conventional savings. Looks like many may switch to shariah compliant savings that is improving much in terms of dvd rate in due course. Invite CEO of EPF for his inputs at this podcast. Many members are still ignorant what is shariah savings scheme? What do they invest in as opposed to the normal savings scheme to enable to increase its dividend rate payout this year and the future outcome.

  • @LoC28C

    @LoC28C

    no basically I believe the fundamentals of the economies in our neighbours are stronger as compared to us. That is also a very big contributor towards the development of their economies. You see, the manufacturing and the agricultural industries in our neighbours are done by the local people there. The manufacturing and agriculture industries in Malaysia are manned by people from our neighbouring countries. Therefore a huge chunk of the revenue earned from these industries will be channeled back to our neighbouring countries too. Here you may also want to bring up the issue about Singapore. My rebuttal on this would be that in Singapore, they are attracting higher value workers and they not only attract these talent to work in Singapore, these people are also offered citizenship too. There is a huge mechanism in Singapore to attract and retain these talents as citizens. Contrary when you look at the Malaysian's policies we are encouraging our local talent to go abroad and stay there because we are not offering them the opportunity for Malaysian talents to grow or the remunerations is just too low compared to our neighbouring countries.

I think DSAI knows how to close the gap with SG but it takes time. SG has 60 years if trial and error to reach this point. Msia should prepare to wait at least 20 years to see result.

    The ringgit foreign exchange rates depend on 2 aspects namely (1) The ratio and number of young people mainly unemployed and underemployed used to buying foreign source goods mainly on credit with the frightening implications on the drain on our financial reserves and the balance of payments (2) The drastic reduction in the production of services and goods due to the sources. The ratio of the sources fall to the fall in unemployment and underemployment is about 5 to 1 so the fall about 10 percent in sources wrecks the employment numbers about 50 percent because many people in Malaysia have two or more jobs. (3) The reduction in sources dashes our prospects of earning from exports while the goods are services are reduced in prices although facing shortages all around

The part on independence of bank negara, you could try to sell to investor it is not based on political pressure but it is hard sell. Shouldn’t bank negara just raise the OPR by 25 basis point to 50 basis point to signal its independence to cushion the tanking Ringgit? The idea of blaming the government for the fall of Ringgit is actually coming from the Ex Opposition Leader (Previous Ketua Pembangkang). I think the crucial issue for the current government is to manage the perception, especially toward what they have said while being an opposition. It is very easy to talk rather than execute. I believe people in Government now understand that policymaking is not something as easy as thinking. Despite we currently see very quiet or unfunctional opposition, from my point of view, they actually learned that when you talk too much, then it will haunt you back later. For the Government side, I hope that they will have the courage to make changes, especially in policy, and stop thinking about how to stay in power (playing politics). If they start to think that this might be the last term, then just strike the best as they can so that people will remember them as the best government ever or at least the blessing for the whole Malaysian. Fair policy and reformation of institutions will be a dream for all of us (since 2018) !

    In addition to subsidy rationalisation to give us more fiscal head room, shouldn’t we be considering lowering our OPR considering our GDP growth is lacklustre (2023: 3.7%) and inflation is under control (2.5% - 3%)? Might cause a short term depreciation in MYR against the USD, but more fiscal space to invest in high multiplier projects and a looser monetary policy will be better for the MYR in the long run. Of course this is a very idealistic statement. OKM, any thoughts?

    As mentioned previously, here and also in Keluar Sekejap, the EPF dividends are paid only from realised gains, meaning only when the investments are sold, the profit made, if any, will be used to pay for the dividends. Paper gains, like value of a stock bought at $100 now valued at $120 but not yet sold, are not realised gains. My guess is that the EPF did not sell much of the conventional investments for strategic reasons. KS also mentioned that the EPF do not have to pay all of the gains as dividends. They may keep an amount as reserves to as cushion for investments that may not perform well during tough times. All these could explain the lower than expected dividend for last year. The substantial increase in dividends from shariah investments could be due to EPF selling more of the investments and made realised gains. It is also easier to give higher dividends because of a much smaller base. Having said all that, until the EPF publishes their investments in detail, which they are not obligated by law, we would not know for sure and could only speculate.

    Talking about tourism and MM2H … Malaysian are more concern about bak kut teh and worrying foreigner taking over the country ! Please lah … how to progress? China today is not like China 20years ago. No surprise 20 year later, India will be much developed than us also.

    If any of you do read up this comment. I just paid my electricity bill today..I am very dissatisfied with TNB for rounding up my bill. Shouldn’t “rounding figure not applied when I am NOT paying by cash but online payment? TNB took 1 cent from me, can you imagine how much this so expensive electricity company is and now we have to pay additional 2%? Imagine how much they will earn when there are millions of household? You may say it’s only 1 cent but it’s still not right and fair when they are charging so much !

    Think the current govt is missing the point by just focusing on reducing subsidies and imposing higher taxes and burdening the rakyat. Instead think outside the box on how to increase/diversify govt collections. For example, petrol prices in Sg is roughly rm12/l for Ron 98 whereas Msia is rm3.47/l. That is more than rm8/l gap. Why don't the govt consider increasing the Ron 97 prices for foreign cars to say rm10. It's still a win win price for both Msia and SG as they still will enjoy cheaper prices yet our govt will enjoy higher revenues without adding more burden to the rakyat. S'porean still also enjoys cheaper food and shopping here. Roughly I can envision billions of additional RM income from implementing this simple plan. Yes there will be capex needed inplaced for the monitoring but for the returns it's more than worth doing. Plus u can also incentivise the kiosk owners by giving them some returns ie 1/2 cents/l extra for monitoring this. This can also be implemented for foreign vehicles from the north. Y always choose the easiest way to tax the so called rich, isn't the govt suppose to elevate overall rakyat income n not bring down the T20 level to B40? Our economic advisors should not be sleeping n think of such simple yet effective solutions.

    Improve public transportation and change these to EV first. It takes hours to recharge an EV compared to filling petrol which takes only a few minutes. Set up adequate EV stations first. No point to have an EV but need to drive to a mall to recharge. Besides I heard EVs are not environmental friendly.

    US interest rate Up and down is part of the equation in global trading system. We cannt blame US. We are the price taker; businessman need to manage his fund in international trading. Just like Mr.Money say Demand and Supply. What are the supply-side things that lead to less demand?? Are other countries have better Supply-side things and business policy? If you are the buyer, what are the factors to look for? Would buyer keep holding the Ringgit if he does not see the values? As for supply-sides, what are the goods you are producing that meet the demand?

    Anwar's weakness. 1) Full of motherhood statement. Very little in implementation or even monitoring body to make sure policies are implement. Worst than Najib in this case. 2) give serious businessman impression that his only reason to become PM is to avenge his imprisonment by former PM. 3) Have no idea how economy works. Don't know the strength and weakness of Malaysian DNA. IN this case, Najib is very good at it. With his MRT projects and MM2H, Najib able to tap into the wealth of mainland chinese wealth. 4) More likely to implement Robin Hood like economic policies. Rob the rich and give to the poor. He forgets that successful businessman are a rare talent just like top scientist and top engineers and doctors. Driving big wealthy tycoon away by continuing protecting bumiputra business such as preventing the sale of Boustead plantation and land own by SP Setia. 5) Bad in choosing the right talent for minister position. Basically, generally bad in putting the right people in the right place to affect changes in Malaysian economy. 6) Still want to become Malay hero. Shouting reformasi for 20 years and yet hardly any reforms in GLCs, GLIC and goverment agencies.

    Anwar only thinks about revenging his imprisonment by Mahathir, Daim and Najib. So Anwar has to get these things done. But by only taking revenge, he will not able to heal these economy. The GLCs like Boustead plantation can't be sold to a non-bumi entity, and the land own by SP Setia cannot be sold to a non-bumi entity. These 2 events already show to most non-bumi business to invest overseas. And these non-bumi business has plenty of money to invest in Sg or USA or Japan.
