Both cameras have their pros and cons..check out the video for sample footage day and night.

I laughed when I read the reviews on Amazon for this camera. Almost everyone who bought the solar panel complained it is not stated anywhere the solar panel has to be mounted in direct sunlight. Some of the pics show the panel mounted up in a tree or under an eve. It blows my mind how many people do not have common sense.

Without any storage options battery is useless. A ups or automatic generator would be the only answer. Than again when power goes down half the time internet does also.
This is BY FAR the best comparison review I have found for these spotlight cameras. Thank you! It would have been a disaster if we went with the battery one as I live in a high traffic area and need more monitoring zone control.
Bought 3 spotlight Ring cameras after seeing your reviews. I appreciate the effort and details you put in your videos.

Great video! I’ve started buying the wired versions for differences that you touched on. Found out after buying five or so Battery Spotlight Cams that the wired versions are a must if you are mounting them on the exterior of your home. With the battery versions all you get are false alerts due the movement of trees and the limited motion settings. With wired versions I’m able to outline the areas around trees and shrubs and works perfectly. Thanks again for the great video. The side by side comparison was very helpful.

@lifehackster, any idea when we might see the next version of the Ring Spotlight Battery?
Thanks for taking the time to do this. There's actually a lot of difference between the two, but Ring don't seem to tell you that. This is about the only place I've found a side by side comparison. It's invaluable to be able to reduce false alarms and the settings on the wired version are far better from experience. Thanks again

Definitely the wired Ring Spotlight cam is better in motion detection.. it uses both the PIR sensor and the software algorithm and that is why it can notify you 3 seconds earlier as compared to the battery version.

The best review, answer all my question
Thanks for video. I tested both of these ring devices and i have to say the wired is much much better then the battery one. Picks up motion much sooner and catches all activity. The battery one actually mixed two different motions. Soo I’m returning the battery camera and keeping the wired. Just need to find a good way to plug and hide the wire. Thanks again.

Thanks for the information. Do you know if the ring battery cam will pick up motion from tree leaves? Because I need to mount it in a tree to see what needs to be seen at night. Can I turn off all lights on the camera so as the camera is not visible? Thanks.
So what do you recommend for outdoor wireless. Ring or eufy??? I currently have arlo and they miss so much action due to 10’second increments.
Thank you for sharing this video. Very informative and detailed. 👍🏻
Great video, thanks for sharing. It really shows how much they sacrificed performance to make the battery version. Hard to believe that having a dedicated power source can make that much difference. They must set everything for lowest power level to save battery life. I wish we had control of the power management. I wouldn't mind charging it like ever 5 days vs 2 weeks to get a little better video quality.

@LifeHackster

I usually don't test WIFi distance because there are a lot of factors involved like number of walls, wall thickness and interference but it will be a good topic to do a comparison between different brand of cameras. I know Ring will be one of the last ones. It has a weak WiFi antenna and it will usually need a WiFi extender.

Hi LifeHackster. So if you don't open the cam app on your cell phone, then the battery version cam only records for 30 seconds? But will it record for more than 30 seconds if you do open the battery version cam app? And how long is the shortest cool down time, until the battery version is ready to record again? And also, the battery version won't send you motion alerts during the cool down time, or it just won't record during the cool down time? Please respond because I am thinking about buying the battery version because it can be placed anywhere. Thank you.
@LifeHackster
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you don't view it from the app (live view), it will only record for 30 seconds and as long as your viewing live view, it will continue to record. Depending on what you choose on the "smart alerts" setting, the frequent setting, will start recording again after 30 secs. when the motion persists...so there is only a few seconds of cool down...

Any idea when Ring will release a new version of the wired spotlight cam? 🤔 They’re on sale at the moment, so I wondered if that was a sign we can expect a new version soon
How long does the battery charge usually last?
Thank you for this video, seems like the wires one is better how long is the cord ?
@LifeHackster

Yes, the wired spotlight cam or generally, Ring's wired cameras are better. The power cord is 20 feet in length.
Life Hackster, will a fiber optics internet work with a Ring camera?
Have always learned so much from your videos. Hard to believe this video is already 5 years old. It's fun looking back at old content. Anyway to convert an old Spotlight Cam Battery to a wired plug-in one? Looks like all the power cords do is charge the battery(s), is there a way to plug in a cord and make it work like a wired one, like the current models? Thanks!
Did you ever get the freezing issue resolved on the battery version. Mine is always freezing up to the point where it is better to just look at the event but it even does it.

Yes, my spotlight cam battery has little to no freezing now. It is in the same location where I had it before and the came connections so I am assuming Ring updated a fixed it. -> kzread.info/dash/bejne/pqCox9eFobLHeMY.html

You can but it will not have the features of the wired version.
I have a question. I bought Ring camera for doorbell, and after a month I found out I have to pay $3 a month or $30 per year for recordings. Are those two you showed in the video need the same payment or no?
How do I disable/turn off the light? Also since you have two Ring Spotlights, does that mean you need two monthly subscriptions for them to record in the cloud? Thanks for the video.

Debating on getting 2-4 cameras. I need one for the front and back yard. Front of house faces north, south side gets back sun exposure. However, I live in MI and it gets -30F in the winter and no sun. I have outlets outside. Suggestions on a brand or brands that would work for my concerns. No lag between movements, leaves blowing creating false alerts, sunlight making the camera unable to see. I'd prefer not drilling holes through my home or walls but ideally no batteries to change outside etc.
Great video! Is the mounting base for both cameras the same? I just had a wired version and am thinking about replacing with a battery version and hoping to not have to drill new holes. Thank you.

Have you done, or are you planning to, review the solar panel to determine what the least amount of sunlight is necessary to keep the batteries charged? I am thinking about buying one, but it would need to face North, which doesn’t afford the most direct sunlight.
@LifeHackster
5 жыл бұрын
I can tell you though as compared to other brands that I have that has a solar panel e.g. Arlo and Reolink, the Ring is the fastest to charge. Ring stated that the panel should at least have sun shining on it couple of hours a day to be effective.
How come you decided to use the wireless one? I’m considering one as I can’t hard wire the floodlight model.

I actually do have the 3 types of Ring spotlights..I purchased the battery one so that I can easily hooked it up anywhere without needing to think about power supply options...I have issues with freezing footage on my battery spotlight at this time and Ring is aware of this.. ring.com/share/6516490205887293920

Thanks for the great videos LifeHackster! Do you know what I can do if I need additional cable length for the solar panel on my ring?
@LifeHackster
6 жыл бұрын
You are welcome :) The Ring solar panel cable has a barrel type connector and not a micro USB plug... I'm not sure of the exact size though so I cannot recommend any extension cable or if there are any that is being made. The simplest way to lengthen the cable is to cut and splice with a matching wire.
Ever since amazon bought out ring things have went down hill. I've tried two solar panels with plenty of sun and no luck then added a wired charger but battery still runs low
When you all are talking about the wired model, is it wired for power only and the video feed is wireless or does the wire take care of it all?
I'm thinking of getting the battery cam. Does the backup battery have to be charged by the solar panel or is there another way? Also, I think those night lights will attract bugs. Will the bugs set off the light? I had that problem with a solar light I was using.
@LifeHackster
6 жыл бұрын
The battery can be removed to be charged..so, if you have 2 batteries...one is a backup and will not be used until the other one is depleted..then you can removed that battery to be charged via the USB cable ~8 hours or so..then just reinstall it which now, it becomes the backup battery. The night lights/spotlights are LEDs and they are not "on" that long to attract any bugs.
Does this camera only record if there is motion? No way of it recording all the time apart from live view?
Hi there I Thank You very. I like it a lot
