Ring Floodlight Camera + Electrical Wiring | DIY

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you're like me and you want a Ring Floodlight camera but have no existing wiring/floodlight, look no further. A simple wiring install is all you need. Adding on to your garage's ceiling outlet is a simple task and can be done fairly easily and quickly. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS if you aren't comfortable around electrical wires or aren't familiar with electrical wiring. Hire a professional in that instance. Leave a comment with any questions, concerns are alternate ways to wire this!

    You could just run the MC cable all the way to the power source. Conduit isn’t necessary in most cases.

    Great…so I don’t need a conduit??? I have the Romex 14/2 connected to my electrical outlet on the ceiling. It is a finished ceiling in the garage with a flush outlet. I am planning to just have the Romex 14/2 on the ceiling with electrical staples (Milwaukee M12 stapler with rated electrical staples). Then connect the Romex through a hole like in your video to the Ring outside. Is this ok???

    Great vid. Thank you. Contemplating to install mine in a similar spot, the only difference is brick outside and have receptacles on each sides of the garage doors. From my research to install by the code : 1. Light switch should be installed in between receptacle/power outlet and floodlight cam 2. should reach the light switch by hand, so installing on garage door ceiling would not work 3. Receptacle should gfci or connect in parallel to gfci

    Glad you’re researching about how to keep things up-to-code! This circuit is GFCI protected. And also I can’t find anything about floodlights needing to be on a switched outlet. Would also defeat the purpose of this particular floodlight. Mind sharing where you saw that?

    Nothing Blew Up!! LOL- Thank you Zach for sharing this video! I was looking for the proper video to follow and your simple approach makes absolute sense. I'm planning on using the Romex MC conduit to the box that you installed that is also shared with the external AC plug- very clever!! At first I was thinking of running an AC cord all the way to the plug from the Ring through the wall but I need to run it into a conduit for fire protection. Can't trust the sleeve alone as it will not contain any fire. Can you also use a hole saw to punch a hole into the wall? I'm glad you mentioned to look for a stud because if I blindly drilled into the hole without verifying the presence of a stud then it could affect the structure around my garage. Driling a hole through the siding and straight through should be easy I would imagine as the inner wall is just plywood.

    A hole saw is fine if it’s 1/2” to 3/4”. I found that using the hole saw first to make a clean cut on the siding then finishing with a same-sized spade bit was easier since too much debris would build up inside the dozer bit.

I have no idea why I didnt think to just run to the outlet that's already in the garage ceiling! lolsmh I have a question for you though.. I have a brick wall outside of the garage that I'll be installing the floodlight to. Do I need to use an electrical box for it as long as I apply sealant?

    I would recommend using a round plastic weatherproof box because you will want some room to stuff the wires in once you connect the wires together. Also, you will get better protection from the elements when using the gasket that comes with the floodlight. Good luck with your install!

    I am gonna try your method. But two things: 1. I am told that romex should not run through conduit. Is that correct? 2. Can we use siding mount instead of weatherproof box? If so, how will mc snap onto siding mount?

  • @workswithzach8219

    @workswithzach8219

    Жыл бұрын

    1) You are correct in that you should try NOT to run romex in conduit since it’s a pain to pull in especially in dense conduit or conduit with multiple bends. It is not against code from what I read. In this situation I just used what I had lying around. In hindsight I should’ve suggested/installed THHN tri-wire. 2) Yes, you could do a siding mount. I would run NM cable if that’s the case and put sealant around your penetration. The Ring floodlight has a weatherproof housing for your connections. Or you could install a simple old-work box if you have all the tools to cut one in. Both ways would work best using NM.

    All that was over kill for this installation. You didn't need to put a junction box at all. Especially if it is going to be getting power from inside the garage. All you had to do was get a three pron extension cord & cut the female side off strip the wires . Connect them to the camera wires. Then just plug it into the reciprocal were the garage door is plug into. Waste of money on buying pipe.

    Agree to disagree for installing a permanent floodlight location. Yes the temporary solution could be a basic extension cord, or the Ring brand extension cord for this floodlight, but for being up-to-code, the conduit/MC is not overkill.
