Rimworld : Work Priorities Tutorial : Tutorial Nugget

Ойындар

The Priorities system in Rimworld is incredibly important, it makes sure your pawns do the important tasks first like patching up the wounded before less important tasks like milking the cows. Having a decent framework or system allows you to specialise pawns that need to be specialised and use your more all round pawns to fill in the blanks. Keeping cleaning and hauling tasks at a universal level allows you to quickly prioritise these tasks when necessary. Limiting the use of level 1 priorities also allows you to crank up the importance of jobs like construction or planting when large amounts of that task need to be completed quickly, while also allowing you to return everyone's priorities to there pre emergency level with just one click.

This right here is the golden point. I've always made separate refrigerated animal dens for corpses, but every time someone has to go in there to treat an animal, bam, massive mood debuffs. Corpse shelves? So many problems solved!

Animal filth rate refers to their ability to produce "animal filth" (poo, basically). It's a different dirt item to "dirt". If they have 0 animal filth rate it means they won't poo on your floors, but they can still walk in dirt from soil or dirty areas like any human can.

Yeah, integrating this simple system earned me massive gains on my 401k. But in all seriousness, I went through and audited my workflow using this, assigned 1-2 primary jobs per colonist based on skill and passion, identified overlaps and overwork, prioritized the work, stopped overstressing and using priority 1 on everything, set anybody who CAN viably do a job to 4, and used 2's and 3's for primary & secondary tasks. Had colonists leftover as primary cleaners/haulers, so they went to 2, and set all colonists to clean/haul 4. Priority hauling for all is 3. Now I can raise all in a particular column by 1 to get more urgent things done, that requires a group effort. It finally all made sense. Now I can actually shift my focus to micromanaging the truly "Oh shit" issues, when needed. Thanks, buddy!

Since you mentioned mods here, a quick video on your favorite mods for "vanilla like" play would be nice. it seems like a pretty slippery slope where a lot of people who play with mods end up having hundreds of mods, and need mods just to manage all their mods. Having a "quick start guide" for mods that are just handy and not game-breaking could really help a new player. You seem to be a fan of "RimHUD" in addition to "Complex jobs" and "Numbers" based on the footage, so I imagine you have a couple mods you regularly use.

There is nothing cuter than puppies who do hauling. I usually make a meet farm by putting all my grazing animals in a small room and feeding them hay (50+ animals in a 5 by 5 area), the puppies so nicely come to bring food to the piggies. And then when my handler pawn slaughters piggy but forgets to haul the corpse the puppy comes feed on its friend. So cute ❤️

I know I'm a bit late to comment on this one so things may have changed for you too. But I don't use wardens to feed prisoners at all, my haulers do that by filling a shelf with packaged meals. Means you never have to think about it as they will feed themselves. The shelves are one of the best furniture items in the game for me, improving the efficiency of almost everything. Haulers keep all the import jobs materials within a couple tiles of their work bench so the workers graft consistently. For grow zones my animals pick up and drop to temporary stockpiles which the haulers then refrigerate and load shelves from that. I play vanilla

Do something simpler like, defeating the empire or leaving the planet by building the ship. There's a world gen mod that you can configure how grouped up settlements of the same faction are. This makes it much easier to wipe them out. Also mods that can be used to configure world size, if you want to do a nomad go around the world run it makes it faster and easier for a video series.

Another great tutorial! Did not know about the "shift+job" function! Any reason you use "complex jobs" instead of "Fluffy's Work Tab"? If you haven't used it, it's even MORE detailed. For example, it has sow, harvest, and cut under plants (great for using "sow only" or "sow and cut" to train up lower-skilled pawns or make use of non-growers at the beginning of the season). You can split up warden between talking to prisoners and delivering food, which I find super helpful for getting food delivered when my social colonists are needed elsewhere. Also really helpful: Construction includes a separate job for "deliver to frames," so haulers will haul materials to frames before doing general hauling. There's nothing better (well, maybe a few things...) than having your top constructor just constructing!

Just wanna say I have lots of respect to you for your style of playing and how you handle this game. Amazing difficult playthrough (without balance breaking mods, which is also a plus) followed by really good and straightforward guides which are very practical for endgame and high wealth colonies. You won't find content like this for rimworld anywhere else because people either solve issues with mods or lowering difficulty, instead actually tackling the challenge like you do. I am really hoping for similar playthrough but with royalty, which changes the game (for the better, in my opinion) in many aspects and adds so much fun stuff to figure out. Royalty is like a base game on steroids.

I prefer to use the work tab mod so I can more fine tune what priorities I want for example having low level pawns sow but not harvest having low level pawns butcher and brew but not cook (since food poisoning from beer is not a thing) and they still get training from the activity plus I can copy settings from one pawn to another (I don’t think that’s vanilla) if they have similar interests and enable or disable jobs depending on skill level.

  • @obuw1

Yes! It's a crucial mod imho. I can make it so multiple pawns can shear animals, and milk them as a low priority job, but only my best tamer gets to go around taming new animals. You can also move some priorities around, for example in crafting where there are like 30 sub-priorities. So you'll always have some people prioritizing your petrochem, some prioritizing smelting, some prioritizing component crafting, etc. Rather than everyone doing the same thing, then all moving onto the next, then the next.

Just in case anyone comes along who's using a more minimal-to-no mod setup: You could get some of the same effect in a less elegant way by using the allowed areas feature. For example, if a pawn's allowed areas say they're not allowed in the kitchen, but they can get to the butcher table and brewery, then they should butcher and brew but not cook even though cooking is one of their assigned tasks.

Then you showed how you click on the names of the work types to toggle everyone at once, either setting them all to a specific number or incrementing / decrementing them all by 1. That is so massively useful I never thought about doing it this way I never used my work page for mass orders like that.

Generalist with high adaptability are very valuable pawns early game and late game when in a crisis. Specialist pawns make everything so much more efficient but they take time invested in them to develop their primary skill ~ This can seem to happen at the expense of generalist pawns, this skill balancing dose not harm the generalist without the generalist the specialist could not have grown. In reality, we are like theses pawns and judge one another not understanding our value propositions in adaptability vs specialization arguments over time.

There isn't a reason to just have the first 5 tasks on priority 1. For example at the start of the video Digtastic has research on 2. If this were set to 1 he would still come to it after the first 5 and before the next level of priority. That way you could have an extra 'layer' of priorities in a way. :)

1: All Emergency services. Fire, medical, etc. 2: trained professionals for professions requiring high skill. Usually people with passions. 3: non urgent, non skilled labor for everyone: mining, farming etc. You need always a lot of farmers for cash crops. Last: cleaning and hauling in whatever order you like. Its usually better to keep slow, noncombat pawns in safe cleaning jobs first, also your master surgeons, and prioritise lifting things on your muscle-bound fighters who can handle a manhunting squirrel on their own. Its usually good idea to have caravan packing sites/pod launchers near where you keep your stuff, or dedicated trading stockpile near your packing place. This speeds things up when needed. Keep a food stockpile inside the prisoner barracks, this way you just haul s pile at a time and possible feeding times are minimised. Interacting with prisoners is specialist work for a trader or another "face" who needs the training and has best chances to succeed in converting them. Hunters also are your animal caretakers, and prioritise animals over hunting, since animals skill is hunter stealth capability. This, plus long range single fire weapon minimise causing manhunter accidents.

I know you said that Huskies are the best for Hauling, but why not use Donkeys? Donkeys have a greater carrying capacity (113 vs. 65), can subsist on veggies/hay, live twice as long, and they work as caravan animals. They don't breed as fast, but I haven't had any issues with them dying off or anything.

oh wow, I didn't know about the left-right system on priorities, that makes a ton of sense! Maybe I'll have less need for a work tab. I wanted to know about more vanilla stuff because I've been doing a pure vanilla, no cheats run (apart from save scumming, I'll be honest), and I wanted to get the most out of the vanilla experience as possible. I usually use tons of mods, (although not that many quality of life mods, surprisingly) and I kind of wanted to finish that vanilla run with no mods, just to see if I could enjoy it, and just to say that I finished a vanilla run by getting the ship, since on every other playthrough I've at least used rimfactory, a gun mod, or the steel extraction mod. Also, I didn't know that you could click on a work label, like "haul" at the top of the work tab, and increase everyone's priority on it, that just blew my mind, and that'll probably reduce my probability of getting carpal tunnel, so thanks!

For those who don't mind a little modding, I'd _highly_ recommend the miscellaneous robots mod to combat the cleaning and hauling problems. It gives you little roombas and drones to clean and haul respectively, and unlike a lot of other mods that try to do similar things this one feels really well balanced. It'll slot into any mostly vanilla playthrough without feeling out of place.

Put bedrest at 2, unless the pawn has an infection. Its pretty unlikely for a bruse or scrape to escalate to an infection and in an early colony where every pair of hands is key, it can mean a lot. I say that but on my last colony one of my 3 pawns lost an arm to infection in the first season.

If you don't have it on level 1, pawns with infections or diseases will get up and walk around, potentially killing them over the course of the disease. Additionally, while a pawn is recovering, some of their stats will be affected depending on what part is damaged. They may have weakened manipulation, moving, hearing, talking, etc. If it's moving, it's especially bad because your pawn is less efficient walking around, and he's now taking longer to heal because he's not resting. It MIGHT be more efficient overall to leave a hurt pawn off best rest, but I haven't done testing. It would sure make it a hell of a lot less convenient though I'm terms of diseases and infections.

  • @obuw1

To avoid hauling/building rushes not based on emergencies, keep your field sizes small and and do your construction in phases. Small fields with differing plants help by having a constant yet small amount of perishables to haul, instead of huge amounts at once. You can also have less dedicated planters than cutters. How does this help? As the plants grow, they start growing only after being planted, so since not all plants are sowed simultaneously, they dont ripen simultaneously. These tactics are especially useful on year-round growing seasons as the sowing and reaping is also constant and will balance itself to certain speed with time.

Horse/donkey good pack animals and haulers, horse is faster and holds more, donkey eats less and is more tame. Boomalopes, eat quite a bit and prone to "fun", but are an excellent source of chemfuel, specially on tribal starts where tech takes longer. Bear, good melee/hauler tame, eats a ton. But they also eat a lot and leave a lot of dirt if you let them roam around your base for hauling. Though dirt is manageable if you have warehouses with sandstone shelves and hay flooring. Overall you're better off having small animals for hauling in your base and keep bigger ones grazing on the next tile for packing, but you'll need to train them once in a while so they don't go wild the moment there's an ambush or you want to go back to base. You can also split your packing animals so you can use ones you keep trained in your base to do back and forth with the grazing caravan to exchange items. I found this very useful after stripping encounter maps of everything they have.
