It's a faction that can definitely appear to be a cult. You can eventually have different beliefs that will either make your colonists happy/sad. Stay tuned to see more on that.
I was not familiar with this game, but this video helped me get acquainted!

I have never seen a noob play rimworld this is so weird but cool. I just started a new tribal colony a couple of days ago
