RIM TO RIM: Guide to Crossing the Grand Canyon in 1 day

Life is too short to not see the Grand Canyon. But preparing to hike across it, especially in just 1 day, can seem daunting. So we're sharing our training, gear, food, lodging, transportation, and experience with the hike. This is by no means the best or only resource. This was our experience. We hope we can provide something encouraging or of value to you, and we hope you'll get to see the Grand Canyon someday.

At 34:20, Bret says many people don't run up the South Kaibab Trail because there aren't water sources or bathrooms. There aren't any water sources, however there are bathrooms.
Additional Important Information Not Mentioned:
- NPS recommends bringing a method to purify/filter water from natural sources, in case the water is off.

Great information and y'all are very entertaining. Love this hike, have done it 11 of the last 12 years. As you said, recommend getting through the box before the sun hits you. Left at 2:30am on my last hike and it still hit 100 degrees on my climb out.

Thank you for the video. Just a few comments. The North Rim Lodge does have a shuttle to the trailhead. The South Kaibab trail does have several bathrooms on it. The Tran Canyon Shuttle will transport a bag (for a fee) from the North Rim to the South Rim (or the other way) so you can take more clothes to wear before your hike. The Canteen at Phantom Ranch closes in early afternoon to prepare for dinner then reopens after dinner. You can get snacks and other stuff like tent stakes, Advil, sunscreen, water bottles, etc. at the Canteen at Phantom Ranch. You can buy 1 Oreo cookie for 75 cents.(At least you could in 2018)

Thanks for the things you shared. The biggest lesson we learned is to check the most up to date information. Such as if the shuttle is running. We were still bummed the shuttle station across from our campground wasn't open. Would've made things easier, but ah well. Good to know about the shuttle taking a bag back! Haha, that would've been helpful. I'm not sure if the North Rim Lodge shuttle was running or not when we were there....but we hit the trail so early, that even if it was, we wouldn't have been there.

Loved your video. I’m 64 and hiked R2R this year September 30. I started at South K at 6:30 and got to Phantom after 3 hrs of hiking. Then up to the N Rim. I prepared for heat in the canyon but the Lord blessed me with a perfect day. I chose my direction because I’m a better climber then descending. 10 hrs 20 minutes. Yippee. My hope was to turn around next morning and go back but I got a blister 😱. So I will go next year and do R2R2R. Maybe I’ll see you on the trail.

Thanks!! Isn't it great when you plan for heat and it's not there?? We absolutely want to hike it again. I'd love to do R3, haha, but not in one day. Maybe stay at the North Rim lodge again. Would be great to see you on the trail! :)
