    This is the best video ever if you plan to do this hike. I watched it several times before I actually hiked it - was invaluable. And the fact that Chris held that camera for the entire hike is incredible.

    Hi Cris, I just want to thank you for all your helpful videos on the R2R in the Grand Canyon. I completed a solo hike from the south bright angel up the north kaibab trail in a day, what an incredible experience, humbling for sure. I just watched your video going down the north rim which was amazing since I felt like I missed it going up because all I wanted to do was reach the top. Again, thank you!!! Safe and Happy trails

    Just did So Kai to No Kai yest 10/5/22 - your guide helped SO MUCH esp as I spaced and forgot my map! Ran into several people along the way (I soloed) incl a nice guy we did the final 2 mi together, when it got to be one of those trails where for every step you hike, the trail extends a foot! It was beautiful - oh me gee the stars at Yaki Point were amazing! Was scared to headlamp it but trail was clear to follow though lots of monsoon puddles. It was magical seeing the first light come over the North Rim, then the alpenglow! Made very good time down to Phantom Ranch and through the Box, which gratefully was still in shade, cool, and with a light breeze! Just kept moving, eating and drinking mindfully, even in steeper parts just went slower and the hot, no shade, long slog up the post-Box canyon again paced myself and kept taking single sips of water (with electrolytes). Geo was just amazing on the hike and the sheer wonder of going back in time millions if not billions of years! So so blessed to be able to do this hike, and can't wait to go back when the water is turned back on in the spring, as it's close to turn-off time now. Thank you so much!

    Hi, Chris Just found your channel and signup for it. I'm coming in September on my first trip, hoping to do the R2R, and 2R if I can pull it off. Mostly I am looking forward to the magnificent views, and beauty of the path, the mileage is the cherry on top. Thank you for your postings and your channel. Leticia N.

    Hello - Awesome videos !! 3D is just genius! I just found your channel today and it is so informative and detailed as well as your website. I plan on doing my very first hike in Grand Canyon in March. Which airport do you recommend flying into and will the weather in March be suitable for the hike? I want to start preparing for my first hike, I plan on the South Rim. Thanks and peace.

    Ah that's great, thank you, and glad the guides have been helpful. So Flagstaff is the closest airport, but usually you have to switch planes, in which case you can prob get a better flight into Phoenix and just drive up the interstate through Sedona, which is a nice 3.5 hour drive. Have fun!

    Best video on an R2R hike I’ve ever seen. Thank you. I’m planning, and am prepared, for this exact hike, solo, next week. If you don’t mind, may I ask: What time of year did you do this, where did you park your car on the South Rim for overnight, and how long did the hike take you? Thanks!

    Since there is a water problem now at north side..what is the best water filtration due to the virus too? I have never used a filtration system

    Sawyer Mini is a good one too - lots of PCTers use it as it's small and light. Just need to get a collection bag or use an empty water bottle to filter.

    Great video! Super excited to do this next month! QUESTION: do you think my New Balance Hierro v6 trail shoes will be “grippy” / technical enough to tackle this? They’re a great intro trail shoe but wondering if I’d be better off with something like the Hoka Speedgoat 4s? They’re a bit grippier and more technical. What do you think? Thanks in advance!

  • @Hikingguy

    @Hikingguy

    I haven't tried the Hierro, but for this trail, you can pretty much use anything decent. A trail runner of any sort will probably give you better footwear than 50% of the other folks doing this hike. I'd just go with whatever is most comfortable, 20+ miles is the big challenge here.

    Hi Cris, hope you and your family are having a great start to the New Year. I have a big favor to ask. I’m planning a solo hike from the South Rim to the North Rim in the Grand Canyon in May. I’ve watched your videos on doing the hike which have been helpful so thank you! My question is what hotels did you use on each end of the rim. I would love easy access to the trail the morning I leave from the south kaibab trail. Any helpful is much appreciated.

    I've stayed at different places, but generally I like to stay at the North Rim lodge (there's a shuttle to the trailhead) and ideally one of the lodges on the South Rim. Did you check out the guide on the website? I have a pretty deep dive into accommodation there, it might be helpful.

    I know you prob did your hike, but for others - I am staying at Yavapai Lodge on South Rim and Kaibab Lodge on North. Both reasonably priced, and really nice staff on the phone!
