@Cyrus Fidelio So using a video about the grief for a man who was adored by so many people to make a spurious point about liberals is the behaviour of a nice person, is it? Tarring an entire generation with the same brush? Lying about British people being on the brink of extinction? That's what a nice person does, is it? You may think you're nice, but you're coming across as an obsessive, insensitive bigot.

@Cyrus Fidelio And you think that a video about Ade Edmondson expressing his grief about Rik's death and a comments section with lots of other people saying the same is the appropriate forum for this bile you are spouting?

I cried the day Rik died, I grew up watching Bottom and the young ones, along with my siblings we still quote it and this is not hyperbole every day, ranging from something as simple as a noise or adapting it into our conversation, Rik and Ade are in my opinion the funniest comedic duo ad infinitum, there’ll never be anyone like Rik again.

A friend and I watched Rik and Ade perform many times at the Woolwich Tramshed in 1979. One night, as they came on stage, they saw that we were the ONLY TWO in the audience and asked if we wouldn't mind if they skipped their act since they knew we'd seen it all before. Instead they invited us for a drink at the bar which was great fun but the highlight of the evening was to still to come. A short while later at the train station (again empty except for the two of us) Rik's voice boomed over from the opposite platform... apologising that we had missed out and offering to do some of the act before their train arrived. Sure enough, within a couple of minutes, their train did arrive and we were left thinking - well that was fun while it lasted. As the train pulled out though, we were thrilled to see Rik and Ade still there and determined to carry on from where they'd left off. (Everyone who'd just got off the train must have wondered exactly what sort of poetry reading they'd dropped into.) Several trains later, both platforms were crammed-full of people watching and what had started off as a private performance became a full-blown Dangerous Brother's show. Forty years later, this all seems like a dream but the energy on that night was incredible. Thank you Rik and Ade!

Just happened upon this video and it struck me again how much I miss seeing Rick on the screen and still can’t comprehend his untimely departure. He was a real kingpin in my formative years of watching what was then called ‘alternative’ comedy. I used to tape the Young Ones on a cassette and bring it in to school and we’d all re-giggle huddling around a tape player listening to the audio of the last evening’s episode. Lord Flashheart, Alan B’Stard - the list is endless. Multi-talented and a downright great bloke. Ade Edmondson bravely held his head high in a fashion that would have made his late friend extremely proud. A deep loss to comedy and......just general FUN.

I normally don't give much of a toss when I hear of a celebrity death, but I was genuinely gutted when heard about Rik passing. Just to put the record straight... they were *still* best of friends when Rik sadly passed. The story in the media was hyped as usual, typical case of the gutter press digging for dirt where there isn't/wasn't any. Yes, Ade had a change of heart and decided he wanted to do some different things, no harm in that. After all, they'd been doing it for 30+ years. However, their friendship still remained. I won't tell you how, but please be assured that I know this to be fact. RIP Rik, you'll be very sorely missed sir.

Rik might have been miffed with the things that Ade said, and vice versa, but that doesn't cause a ruck in a friendship. As has been said many times, they have been friends for 40 years plus. Nothing more needs to be said.

I met him when working behind the scenes on the first ever comic relief. A roomful of us were typing pledges into the computers. A voice behind me said "This is the lady I'm looking for" I turned round and it was him, my hero. He gave me a big kiss on the cheek and then went to every girl in the room and have her a kiss. I asked for another one at some point and then, on his way out he came up and gave me another one. What a man. I think 2 other 'celebs' came in that night and they just stood at the door and waved. I'll never forget how genuinely lovely he was.

This still breaks my heart. As utterly heartbroken as I was when Rik died, I can't imagine the kind of pain those close to him were going through. Ade and Rik were brothers and best friends, and he had to deal with his own specific kind of trauma with his death. I was actually scared for him for a while, because I'd never seen him that depressed before and I wasn't sure if he'd ever be the same again. And it's not like he exactly was, but he was definitely strong enough to move forward with a new stage in his life. Never should have doubted his ability to do that. Rik wouldn't have.

I remember the trips to Amsterdam (I'm from Holland) to buy all the VHS tapes of Bottom. Every time I saved enough money I bought one part. They made me laugh so hard my parents came to my room to check if something was wrong. I really miss those care free days in my life now. Those days will never return. I miss the 90's.

I met Rick in the village of Kingsbridge on the south coast whilst he was shopping with his two little girls in the mid 1990s.He was kind enough to allow me to have a photograph taken with him and to this day it is one of my most treasured possessions. Unfortunately I’ve never been able to meet ade. Two Comedy geniuses that will forever live on in the hearts of many.

This is a very moving video. I'm from Barcelona and our region, Catalonia, was the first in Spain to broadcast all those subversive innovative Beeb shows (Who, Younc One, Black Adder, Yes Minister). I was only six when the Young Ones was first put on telly but it stayed with me and with many other people as well. We grew with them, they taught us about irreverence and the absurd. Even now, 30 years later we still remember those shows as a benchmark for all that came later. And believe if I say that many of us got extremely pissed off and even cried when we heard Rik left the building. So thanks for this lovely compilation of the things Ade had to say about his friend.

Still can't believe that he's gone, even after 6 years. Unfortunately, I never got to meet him, because you can't help thinking that he would have been an incredibly nice, down to earth bloke. The posting by Simonize41 thankfully confirms this. I remember hearing stories that he and Ade had fallen out because Ade didn't want to do anymore "Bottom", but, it would appear that this wasn't true. Like any good friends, it is possible to disagree about something and to be upset, but still remain extremely close despite differences of opinion. I have no way of knowing off course, but I'm sure that Rik and Ade loved and valued each other and would have remained friends whatever disagreements they had. It's clear to anyone that whenever Ade talks about Rik, he's still deeply upset and misses him terribly. As do we all.

this is a celeb death that people are feeling so much .. its like people genuinely loved him an felt they knew him personal .. he was a sensation a cult figure .. someone if u grew up watching u never 4got .. he was a true unique comedy genius .. his pressence .. his face .. everything about him was larger than life an took the watcher on his journey .. he came thru the screeen .. an the fact there was so much footage .. u can think things like .. What would Rik say or do in this situaion to amuse urself .. just like u could think that about people u known for years .. cos he gave alot of himself in the work ... ade an rik were the beatles .. them togeether was bigger than anything they could do apart .. if it aint broken dont fix it ... they have something magic together ... i was very excited when i heard rumours of a new Bottom .. but guesss it werent ment to be .. an I guess if u had worked with rik 218128219812891298days an nights then maybe u would need a break aswell .. i think ade had a lower stress tolerance an wanted to do things that wouldnt stress him asmuch 4 his own health an sanity .. proberbly needed to have a break .. he woulda came back to do the rik an ade show again in time though .. sadly he wont get the chance now .. an he proberbly feeels an element of guilt .. but no one expected this .. hence everyone is so shocked ... i guess its just a life lesson we all get when someone dies .. should do things when u can .. dont put things off too long .. cos u might not have too long etc ... an dont 4get it just cos u go thru a persiod where no one dies for a while
