    I am absolutely over the moon with the availability of these classic Hong Kong movies on bluray. The transfers are immaculate, but the HD images have only made the doubles more obvious. I saw the Above the Law cut on VHS growing up - both Cynthia and Yuen Biao survive at the end. From what I heard the HK audience hated the ending because Cynthia dies. Awesome essay

    I believe your original video was about Corey Yuen's choreography but you had to fact check righting wrongs finale which led to this video. i very much appreciate this breakdown and your effort to give us your insight during a action director change within the same film. The only other one that I know of is Kung Fu Hustle where Sammo started the choreo and Yuen Woo Ping finished the rest I believe. Thank you Eric, hopefully we get to see more of these essays!!

    Hsiao Hou should've gotten more chances to show his stuff in the modern movies like this. The dude was solid stuntman and an Ace acrobat. He was a mainstay in the period piece films. Sammo seems to have been giving him the most stuntwork jobs. Last film I saw him in was Iron Monkey as a henchmen.

    Wow This is an incredible video, super informative!! I used to believe that fast cutting was a disservice to good action, but the example that you bring up really broadened my perspective. Its not about the fast cutting ,its about how your action is shown within it . Thank you :D

Just a suggestion for a future video: Something about Sammo's Style of Action (and how he made the best Jackie Chan fight scenes) and it's evolution from the early "Iron Fisted Monk" days up until his latest work as in "SPL 3" or "Call for Heroes" would be very interesting!

    Great review! .. btw there is a great remaster by 88 films from UK and it includes all 4 endings. One in which YB survives but CR dies, one in which both die, one in which both survive and one in which only YB dies. The german version was the happy end version in which both survive. Whats interesting is that for CR to survive they had to end her fight differently, so this version has some small different fight parts and also different dialoge before the final fight starts. :)

    what you said about how close up and quick they cut was something i've been noticing rewatching. So many shots in tight, a punch or kick thrown just to cut to the foot or fist hitting the face in a close up. then like a couple moves shot in sequence and then it starts cutting around again. It's still really good but it makes the complaints of western action in some instances not warranted. The stunts and falls really get that wide and long shot and choreography is worked around like it always is.

    @@emptyblank099a no, movies like these don't get made 'cause of the financial politics of Hollywood actively blocking these movies out and trying to exploit the audience when\if it comes to market. Yeah, for me the obvious stunt doubles add to the charm. Sorta like spotting all the fake Jackies taking bumps in Jackie Chan movies. There was a great double moment in Yes Madam where "Cynthia" does a fall or a somersault off a staircase, and i don't even think they gave the double a blonde wig 😂 to me that doesnt take away from the artistry or choreography on display as much as say, wonky cgi (which is to say most cgi)

    Who doubled for Jackie in the Dragons Forever end fight with Benny the Jet? Not the kick you mentioned but the (degree) chest kick towards the end of it. Benny said that that Chan did it over and over, but that's not Jackie in the edit. Body shape is wrong. So is the hair. It actually looks like Biao, but that could be fan boy eyes...

  • @devalarees9987

    @devalarees9987

    Жыл бұрын

    I think it was the same guy, Chin Kar Lok. I believe Benny when he says that Chan did it over and over, probably because none of the takes looked good enough for Sammo's exacting standards, so they ended up going with a take of Chin Kar Lok doing it that looked better than Jackie could do. Not knocking Jackie, of course he was an incredibly talented performer, but that particular kick was a very tricky skill (also a left-legged kick, typical of Chin Kar Lok; Jackie would've done it with his right). I believe Chin Kar Lok also doubled Yuen Biao in the Dragons Forever end fight, where he does a side flip over a rail. Chin Kar Lok was really one of the most acrobatically skilled performers in the history of the business, mostly relegated to doubling rather than acting roles.

  • @kaukui

    @kaukui

    @@devalarees9987 Thanks for the reply. I think you're right. It's not that Jackie didn't do it (..'probably did it over and over), it's just Chin did it better. I might have to look in to more of his work. A bit like when I found out Jet Li's was Xiong Xin Xin from The Blade. I love it when stuntmen double for other stuntmen.

  • @LegendaryOn99

    @@devalarees9987 many believed it was Yuen Biao early on (since he was on set), but as eric said, chin ka lok is a left kicker, so im definite it was him. yuen biao did the 540 kick in righting wrong and twinkle lucky stars with his right leg.

  • @devalarees9987

    @devalarees9987

    Жыл бұрын

    @@LegendaryOn99 Also, this is really getting into the details, but the back elbow that sets up that kick looks a little weird. In the shot before, Jackie slips to the right, setting up a left elbow, which would've set up a right-legged kick, with Jackie's face open to camera, just the way Yuen Biao does the kick in Righting Wrongs. But then it cuts to a right elbow, which actually doesn't quite make sense in the edit. It sets up a left-legged kick, with the double's face closed to camera (this is probably why they used Chin Kar Lok, who could do it left-legged, instead of Yuen Biao).

    And as super not overly relevant but something to note thing is; most Sammo fights are filmed in 4:3 so when you see them in 16:9 they are, unfortunately cropped. Sammo seemed to like 4:3 over 16:9. Most films don't suffer too much but they are better, if you can still find them, in 4:3. I have this on VHS as "Above the Law" (the "happy ending one" with no Yuen/Rothrock deaths) in 4:3 and the fight is a little more pulled back, so the close quick cuts are even less jarring. Edit: Did I mention 4:3?

    I dont know why, but i feel Sammo Hung always find a way to make his fight scenes, well feel more like a fight, dont remove the stylized violence element, but doesnt feel "unrealistic". Not sure if any of that makes sense.
