Carpenter and Glenn were first and second respectively, Glenn managed 150 seconds, but Carpenter did 171 seconds, almost doubling the previous record of 91 seconds. Carpenter was a SCUBA diver, which is part of the reason he won, I don't think Glenn was. The book said that Carpenter typically had the best performance on all the physical tests, and Glenn was usually a close second place. In addition to being a SCUBA diver, Carpenter had been a college gymnast, so he was the best natural athlete among the Mercury 7.

They're not holding their breathe. It is a technique called circular breathing. You breathe in through your nose while you simultaneously push out from your mouth air stored in your cheeks. The hard part is that pause when you have to stop breathing through the nose and fill your cheeks back up with air. That's why they have to maintain the ball between the lines. It is easy to push too weak OR too strong. This is a technique practiced by most horn players, for obvious reasons.

They're the only ones squeezing the rubber tubing, I guess to reduce the internal diameter, increase the pressure of their breath, so with less air used they equal the same pressure as the other men who don't squeeze their tubes.

1956-58, I'm going to El Toro school for kids of officers, ignorant. Don't all kids go to school at jet bases? Doesn't everybody hear several series of sonic booms every few weeks? Field trips to the base, the control tower? Sitting in displayed open-cockpit monoplanes (I tried to enable the machine gun, not successful)!
