Giardini e i parchi circondano la parte vecchia (Vècriga), ma è anche il rispetto per natura che è insito nei cittadini, molto attenti alla pulizia delle strade. I posti piu' belli: la Chiesa di San Pietro, il Palazzo dell'Accademia delle Scienze, il grattacielo dell’Hotel Radisson e la Torre della TV. La parte antica è costituita da piccole viuzze acciottolate. I Lettoni sono in minoranza rispetto ai russi ma le cose cambiano appena ci si sposta fuori città. Gli anziani russofoni si sentono legati alla Russia e non ne vogliono sapere di imparare il lettone. Una caratteristica degli abitanti è l' amore per il canto. In ogni famiglia c'è secondo un calcolo statistico almeno una persona che fa parte di un coro, un gruppo musicale o che si diletta a cantare canzoni popolari.
Per Riga il 2014 rimarrà un anno decisamente particolare. Oltre all'ingresso nell'area euro, la città è stata nominata capitale della cultura europea. Per questo evento è stata ultimata la costruzione della Biblioteca Nazionale, sorta sull' altra sponda del fiume. Riga si distingue per la presenza di stili architettonici diversi. E' sorprendente constatare che un'intero quartiere racchiuda una delle più grandi collezioni dell’architettura Art Nouveau del mondo, capace di attirare un esercito di visitatori appassionati di storia dell'arte.
A circa mezz'ora di treno si trova Jūrmala, bellissima località di villeggiatura sul Baltico, con le sue spiagge, decine di chilometri di sabbia bianca e fine, le sue grandi dune e lunghe pinete popolate da vecchie case in legno ancora abitabili.
