Rig Rundown - Starcrawler's Henri Cash

In just five short years, two scorching albums, and hundreds of electrifying, shock-rock performances (think fake blood and straightjackets like Ozzy, Cooper, and Manson), @Starcrawlermusic has earned big-named fans like Elton John, Dave Grohl, Mike Campbell, and Ryan Adams. (The latter produced their 2018 self-titled debut featuring Beck’s daughter Tuesday on the cover. Both of them are fans, too.)
Much of Starcrawler’s glam-punk swagger is due to the peanut-butter-and-jelly relationship between singer Arrow de Wilde and guitarist Henri Cash. His prickly guitars and redlined Ramones rhythms flank her seething, sneering, sensual vocals making every second of Starcrawler’s 28 minutes a gas. And most of it was done on three strings.
“Having three strings allows me to just play,” admits Cash. “Half the strings, half the brain power [laughs]… I’m so used to the 3-string setup that it feels natural and I don’t think about anything.”
2019’s follow-up Devour You maintained the daring Stooges’ snarl, but incorporated slower tempos and B-Bender moans for the Let It Bleed-esque “No More Pennies” and dream-pop swirler “Born Asleep.” The result is still an overall good-time ruckus, but the occasional change of pace makes the faster-paced uppercuts hit harder.
In between recording fresh material for Starcrawler and a new project, gear-gobbling guitarist Henri Cash virtually welcomed PG’s Chris Kies into his L.A.-based tone zone.
In this episode, the sharp-dressed man shows off his main custom builds from Randy Parsons (including a 3-string ripper), induces serious gear lust with his collection of Fenders, Gretsches, and Gibsons, and shows off the degrees of burn bustling on his board.

Sixty-five year old Starcrawler fan here, Henri's guitar playing is a big reason why.
This kid is living his dream. So awesome!
I just discovered these guys recently - and instantly became a big fan. Henri is one of the most interesting and promising new guitarists on the scene in many years.

Starcrawler is the best new and true rock band I’ve heard in a longggg time
I like that he name drops R.L. and Billy Zoom. His band definitely has that youthful R&R energy that's needed. Excited to hear more from them and their sound to progress.
If you haven't seen Starcrawler live i urge you to make a big effort. They are awesome! Top 5 of the best bands I have ever seen.

Was in college. My musical engineering teacher took half a day of class to pick apart the guitar building scene. God damn...
I've really enjoyed Starcrawler, but I did not expect the depth from this kid. He knows what he likes and makes it work. Freakin' rocks that Digitech Drop pedal!
What a great rundown. Never heard of him or SC. Always up for some new material with real heart. I can dig it. This Cash kid's charming quirkiness and his somewhat punkish ethos and unique playing style tells me he's gonna be around for awhile and I see nothing but success and positive things down the road for him. I wish him all the best. Rock On Henri!

When I first listened to three Starcrawler vids, I was absolutely blown away...hark, a unique sounding band with a great singer. But that guitarist sealed the deal...the dude can play like no other. I know that's a bold statement, I'll define that Mr. Cash can integrate several styles without one saying I've heard that before. He is someone that guitar players will follow for years to come. Peace...

Once again, a great guitarist played drums at a young age. This is the key to developing an acute sense of tempo. Play the drums first. An entire world of instruments opens.

Great video. Henri rocks - as does Starcrawler - and it’s great hearing him talk about his gear and how he uses it to get his unique sound (the three string in particular). I was in L.A. recently and was fortunate to take in a show at McCabe’s in Santa Monica, at which Henri, his brother Bill and his Dad (and Carla Olson - The Textones) joined the great Peter Case on stage to play some Nerves and Plimsouls songs. It was a real treat to see such a great display of inter-generational musical talent and collaboration.

Love the band, love this guy.
Just saw these guys last night without ever having heard of them, they were fucking amazing! This guy is a pretty monstrous player, and he and their singer have ridiculously immaculate stage presence. I'm not sure if I was more impressed by how well they performed or how incredible of a job Henri's guitar tech was doing.
So cool to see someone interested in the sound of real instruments instead of plugging into a amp modeler.

The treble booster he is talking about is from a Gretsch 7632 Corvette Deluxe from 1976, it came in two varieties, either a treble boost or a fuzz and treble boost. Wonderful weird guitars. Fret nibs and a 0 fret, 4-2 tuners and a stunning maple neck with volute. You can see todays reissues of the corvette, they dont do them justice.

I have one of those old Fender heads. It's beat to hell and the corners are rusted from a long succession of drunken dive and club gigs. Stored it for years and it died. Had a $75 recap job done on it and it just sprang to life. Same groove tubes in it from the 80's. Sounds better now than I remember it. Does the J. Thunders thing. These 60's/70's era Fenders are industructible and techs love the simplicity when working on them and they rock. I put mine through hell, dimed it for every gig and practice and it's still blazing. Couldn't recommend a better starter amp for guitarists who are just starting to gig.
Really, really enjoyed this... He's so real its addictive...

What's wrong with being rich and not having jobs. I'm not rich and have been working since I was 16, my overall impression is that it sucks lol. Not their fault for being fortunate enough to have family already connected to the music biz.
Damn. I didn't know starcrawler had money like that.

@@SmartStr33t that depends on the style of music you play. Dearmond pickups are great for twang, surf and rockabilly of course. I play cowpunk, hickabilly style so they are perfect for me. The G512? Series had them. They are getting harder to find but they pop up every now and again.
Henri should record a solo record for sure. Country rock

Guitarists like Henri don't come along every day. I'll definitely be following his musical career as long as he has one (which I hope is an extremely long time). He has a natural talent as a showman that really impresses me.

I've been a fan since they blew me away, opening for MC50 a few years ago. I'd been debating whether I should skip the openers and show up just before MC50's set--so happy I didn't do that.

Jacky bam bam of 93.3 WMMR turned me onto this dude, I watched Starcrawlers material on KZread, This guy has star material written all over him, Im sure loyalty to Starcrawler is paramount to him at the moment, But if Starcrawler doesn't make it big, I guarantee you this guy is absorbed into an established band thats already made it, I had a dream the night I first watched a bunch of their material that he was the replacement for Mick Mars in Motley Crue !

pedal steel will sound GREAT on pennies! hope there is alive release or something with that version, c'mon throw the dog a bone already... lol perhaps one day I witness it for myself?

first thing I noticed when I heard this band pennies I think it was his guitar really stood out for me.. love itits fat as fugg and he seriously exploits it.. I love huis guitar work so many guys today are like oh wow man I just played 2,356 notes in 3 bars man if I finger tapped I could fit 132 more notes in there man which ios no big deal really but all those notes and they never have much to say and most feel like a devils thorn in the shoe.. lol sorry if you're that guy keep on pluck'n one day you'll win the race and will be able to focus on the music.. lol
