Rig Rundown - Jennifer Batten
Музыка
Article and photos: bit.ly/JenniferBattenRR
Jennifer Batten took a few minutes before her clinic at Sam Ash in Nashville to show Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger her rig and play some mind-bending guitar.
Batten travels with one guitar: her Washburn signature JB100. This guitar features a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and Duckbuckers in the middle and neck.
For added sonic expression, she uses a Fishman TriplePlay to give her unlimited weirdness.
Jennifer Batten designed her own mute system that attaches to the guitar’s headstock. Before that, she used a sock.

I honestly think she has been missed as a true Maestro and a true guitar genius. Seriously she is legendary in the field of guitarists and should be honored for what she has brought to the guitar player scene. She's insanely talented!
Love when the artists themselves do the rig rundown!
She is truly a great player, and really seems to be a genuinely great person to talk with. Good job.
She knows how to use technology creatively.
Jennifer is a hard working and extremely talented guitarist..Lots of luck Jennifer in your journeys.
I had the pleasure of seeing her media show in Sheffield about a month ago at our local music shop. All I can say is incredible musician very talented but more important a beautiful person with a great sense of humour. I was also lucky enough to drive her back to her hotel, she is a very special lady and humble human being.
Holy crap, she's still as good as she has always been!
This woman can play..you never get tired listening to her.Go on Jennifer!!!
I've been admiring John's two-part stance, beginning at 6:19 with the right hand on the hip and pectoral's pushed outwards, followed by the left hand on the right hand on the hip at 7:05 - beautifully executed, looks fantastic. I can't wait to try it myself.

An amazing person and player. She doesn't get enough credit.
Admired Jennifer's playing for a while. Never knew she had such a personality. Very entertaining, should be seen more.
Lots of love, I went to her guitar clinic when I was a kid at a local small mom and pop guitar shop. She is a fantastic person to talk to and the most fascinating guitar player of all time. Very underrated in our social network. Should be a household name!!!
One of my favorite rig rundowns. Ever!
Terrific interview! Entertaining, kept moving, and kept me interested right through.

+Jim Manson I agree. Good stuff!
She was the guest at this music camp I was at a few weeks ago, and she's an insane guitarist. I was really surprised when she said she played with Jeff Beck and Michael Jackson, and I thought that was awesome. She's actually really nice, I met her afterwards and I also got her to sign my guitar strap that I use with my Stratocaster

@@grandcru5690 Yeah, that came usually gets famous musicians to come in and talk to us (some of the other guys in the past have been dudes like Alex Lifeson, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Randy Bachman and Paul Gilbert to name just a few) and it was a really cool experience back then. I'm really happy I did it
Ms. Batten is always a pleasure to listen to, learn from, and watch! And Mr. Bohlinger is the best gear/artist interviewers out there!
Jennifer was always so cool. I felt she deserved WAY more recognition and time in the spotlight.
I'm digging the Jennifer! She seems like a real person with a very real attitude about life and the roller-coaster aspect of it all. More, she doesn't appear too fazed by the occasional 'troughs' in the ride....
Simply one of the best rig rundowns in history so far
Huge fan of Jennifer here and also love this and all the Rig Rundown videos. I learn so much from them Thank you! Because of this video I started looking for this Amp1 and Nanocab which has lead to my buying one. I have to say I love it so thank you again Jennifer for your forward thinking and practical advice. Much success in your future !
This is one of my favourite rig rundowns. Jennifer is sooooo damn cool, the interview has a really friendly vibe too.

Jennifer Batten is a time served guitarist who has paid her dues to her craft, she is a excellent musician. She has worked hard to achieve the standard she's at, equally as important as you can see from this rig rundown she is also a genuinely lovely human being, lastly yes she probably is one of if not arguably the best female guitarists in the world today. She gets my thumbs up👍
man you can't help but love her! what a super cool woman!
i had the pleasure to play with her in Italy last year! She is an amazing guitar player and a very nice person !!
I always love her style.

Bet your waiting for that Bowling For Soup rig rundown
One of the better and more entertaining Rig Rundowns I've seen.
This is one of the best Rig Rundowns I've seen in awhile, good job!
John Bohlinger gets props here - he is a superb interviewer, no interrupts and the interviewee stays on topic very well, which also says a lot about Ms. Batten! Two knowledgeable people who are on the same wavelength, and who have a good sense of what their listeners want to know - it doesn't get much better than that! And Ms. Batten actually plays guitar for the viewers to see and hear what she is talking about! How many of these Rig Rundowns has Premier Guitar posted where the guitar players never touch a guitar, so you don't know what they are talking about! Jennifer Batten is a sky high talent, who has both feet firmly on the ground!
I love how "Rock Chick" she is, even at nearing her 60s. - I will be meeting her tomorrow, which is kind of significant to me growing up as a little '90s Michael Jackon fan. He had her in his musical arsenal for a decade. - Seeing what she's like makes me a little less nervous. :P But I should probably keep in mind that MJ probably had the most easy going and genuine no-nonsense people around him, and I'm comfortable with anyone who was good in his book.
Loved it Jen and John - great rig rundown!
She would be like the most kick ass grandma to have lmao
one of the best rundowns so far, awesome
Wow she’s so humble and down to earth. Legendary guitarist, glad I found this video. Jennifer Batten has always been a inspiration, her days with Michael Jackson were epic!
Been my guitar hero since 1986. Started junior college that year and discovered the guitar magazine collection. First week in there was an article featuring Jennifer Batten 2 hand tapping sorcery. Same year Vinnie Moore did his Pepsi Challenge commercial. I was zapped. I HAD to learn what these fingerboard maestros were doing. The magazines had these little tear-out square-plastic records and I'd tear them out and throw them on the record player. (could slow them down) She was beautiful and terrifying. Perfect playing, power, speed, and articulation, like a guitar wielding nexus 6.
This lady is no joke. She is so impressive .Jenifer can really play her guitar. She knows all the tricks. Thanks for this post. She was the first technical female player in her own level and she's a joy to listen to . She and maybe Lita Ford , I remember she was performing with Michael Jackson and I just couldn't stop listening to her. I'm a George Lynch fan but I could listen to Jenifer forever. She is so impressive a true inspiration.
LEGENDDDD!!!!!! one of the best female guitarists virtuoso´s from all time! you listen to hear and you can understand HOW MUCH Orianthi, Nina Strauss and other female musicians needs to learn yet...love her sense of humor! Humble and beautiful person.
What a delightful talented artist.
the best rig rundown, jennifer is so cool
She is one awesome lady! Immensely talented, knows her shit. Love that she's into the technology of creating different sounds and moods. From watching her perform with Michael, she has a fantastic creative stage presence too, doing dance steps while playing, and really interacted with him to make the shows great.
Very cool rundown, you got to love Jennifer!
It's great to here how much Jennifer loves her RP1000. It is a great pedal. Great Rig Rundown.
She really is an awesome person and musician!!! Thank you!!!
That was simply awesome, great rig down. Jennifer you are inspirational .....
Jennifer Batten is a gifted artist !!! Very creative !!!
Jennifer is an extraordinary guitarist and a master of fx...... thank you John. Great interview😀😀
Love how, in an industry obsessed with "vintage" and "authentic", she just all out embraces modern technology. Cool lady, cool rundown.

This was very refreshing for me. I have been buying the BS for many decades and in 2005 I grabbed the Digitech GNX4 and really learned how to use it. I found the RP1000 to be a watered-down version so I bought another SIX GNX4s. The RP1000 has more robust footswitches than the the GNX4 so I control mine externally and keep it off the floor. I watch those other rig rundowns and shake my head at the vintage BS and the pedal boards with knobs and a zillion cables. I'm also one of the few who took the Peavey AT-200 guitar seriously. This guitar auto-tunes without motorized tuners. I flip from open G to standard tuning all the time and I do it in a heartbeat.

I think it's the collectors who obsess about vintage. Even the guys who play or own vintage instruments (because they've become collectors) have modern stuff. Joe Walsh, SRV, Billy Gibbons all appear in a bunch of different pictures with Tokai guitars. Santana, Gambale both show up in old ads with yamaha guitars. The reality with the older guitars is that they're not as reliable. If you have money and someone to keep them up to date for you, great. If you're playing night after night, you want a guitar with no squirrels in it that feels right. Sometimes that's the vintage guitar, and sometimes it's not. Personally, every vintage instrument that I've picked up has felt substandard to a new guitar unless it's been gone over recently. Not a new $400 guitar ,mind you, perhaps something that costs a couple grand and is done right. There was an LP Special comparison on here from someone, with the old LP special (a budget guitar) supposedly having some less than positive quirks and a price tag in five figures. You have to be interested in something other than the playing to buy an old LP special for that much and know that doing something like refretting it will hugely devalue it (despite making it a better guitar). If I were going for a top shelf vintage les paul, I'd probably fish around for a good recent tokai like an HLS 420 (they are not cheap), but even some of that kind of work - as good as it is - is just chasing details.

The chuckle for "vintage and authentic" comes up, too, when you see a player with a vintage guitar and about 10 thousand dollars worth of boutique pedals and some fully digital sound modifying stuff.

Also, Les Pauls have tons of issues. From tunning issues to the classic headstock or neck joint cracking because they used flatsawn wood for the neck on a thin neck that has an angled headstock. Recipe for disaster. This is one of the reasons why all Les Pauls come with the robot tuners. Keeping them in tune is a challenge. Also...The 400$ guitars we have nowadays run circles around old high end models. They're better built, have higher quality components and so on. And cost less. I'm pretty sure those old guys would've killed to have what we have now for the same price back then.
Those strings needed never alowed me to learn, and I tryed for years to learn. Loved this gal.
"You can't not have a whammy!"Cool gear, good rundown.Nice job, John - Thanks PG.
Jennifer is so cool. Loved this rundown.
Jennifer is fantastic and puts on a great show
I really like John Bolinger. He's goofy, but he's generally interested. He doesn't interrupt the artists at all like Perry does. I really hope ne (and especially Rebecca Dirks) do more of the Rig Rundowns from now on

That kind of comes through in the interview! Ms. Batten knows her guitar playing and tech down to the last detail, and she doesn't brag or boast about it, just tells it straight and with no embellishment. I would in fact guess - apparently it is true! - that she would be a fantastic person to know!
Her, Adrian Beluw and Vernon Reid together.....that would be an awesome future-guitar-tech match....
Great VIDEO. This is the way one should do a rig rundown.....
I saw her with Jeff Beck in concert in 2000, 2nd row seats. It was awesome of course.
I want a rig rundown of JOHN'S rig! I'm willing to bet he's got some pretty cool stuff hidden away!
23:50 'that is called jazz'..i died.. very good interactions by them two.awesome
She's so likable and a damn good player. Thx for this Interview.
Great interview, with some excellent questions
Awesome rig rundown, she's super cool!
I learned a lot about Jennifer. Sounds like a class act!
what a treat! Thanks guys!
Got one of her albums (Above, Below and Beyond) and love her playing and she's epic on the vids here on YT with Uli Jon Roth and Andy Timmons. Nice to see Uli's signature on her guitar (just below the woman's feet). Much respect.
I just met her today in the Netherlands. She's amazing. She signed my guitar, so happy me :-)
best female guitar player I've ever seen, better than most guys too, everyone talks about Nita Strauss, lita ford, Joan jett, this girl IS THE SHIT!!!

Jack Sack of hairy tirds - But that's because they're more current... Jennifer is like 59 by now, you know. Old school. - Not that it means she should be forgotten about, on the contrary. But her spotlight was the '80s and '90s, and people were talking about her back then because she was a pioneer as a female guitarist/musician. - She was an example to me as a child in the '90s, and becoming one again. - But girls like Nita Strauss are my generation, half the age, and are now the ones younger people see. And Jennifer Batten is probably an example to Nita Strauss. That's how it goes...

@@michaelangeloh.5383laughable, younger and NOT as good by any stretch and this many years later still suck compared to Jennifer
Hey hey Jennifer, thanks for the inside info. Aside from always seeking to play and write great stuff, I can never get enough of tones, effects and the art of capturing a heavy "WONK CONK CONK" sound on a track. Ha ha, that's how me and my bud Steve used to describe a metal sound. Really glad you talked about how you use your expression pedals to raise and lower the frequency. If I ever tried to lift "Catfight" I would've prolly would've gone out of my mind! Cheers love!
"Before that, she used a sock." Best thing I've read on the internet today.
Much love for John and Jen!
Long time hero. She's such a great player and with such a warm personality.
Best Batten interview ever!
I remember hearing her rendition of flight of the bumble bee as a kid. I was sold. Cool lady, hell of a player!
Beautiful personality Ms Jennifer . She is great musician. I respect
I saw her play with Jeff Beck and it was an amazing show. I'm still in shock and it was 15 years ago. Thanks Jennifer. They played A Day in the Life and everyone around me was crying [no shit]
Such a talented lady! It really surprises me that she has such an inexpensive rig. I have an RP1000 as well and it is nice to see someone pro use reasonably priced gear and get great tones.
Saw her with Jeff Beck at Roseland Ballroom in 2001. Totally fantastic guitar player. Complemented Jeff Beck perfectly!
What a lovely woman!
Wow, she is a badass guitar player. Love her whole vibe!
Ohh what a nice lady and superb player.. i really enjoyed this rundown a lot..
She comes across as so likable in this video. And she's a really good player.

beautiful guitar playing!!! she friggin rules...!!!
Jennifer might just be the coolest person on earth. She's definitely one of the best guitar players.
This is great stuff - Jennifer is great, and (although I've got no beef with the other Rig Rundown people past and present) JB is the best interviewer. Good vibes all over.

Really like this lady and her attitude and personality! Great video Premier Guitar. It says a lot that I can appreciate this sort of content too. My rig = Gibson 54 in to a Vox AC30 top boost. 3/4 channel vol. Boss tuner.
"I love the sound of slide, but I suck at it..." oh I can SO relate LOL
Love her playing. I particularly love that she does Jan Hammer's synth parts, when he was emulating a guitar on his keys, which she's now emulating. The (Star) Cycle is complete. That's pretty cool. I can only imagine how ace it would be to play in Jeff Beck's band (and MJ too if I'm honest).
Brilliant!! At the point where Jennifer mentions that she has a song called 'Cat Fight' and demonstrates some fretboard histrionics, all of my cat's ears went up....!!!
I wasn't really fond of Jennifer Batten, until I watched this video :D Time to find out what I've missed so far!
She's so cool and grounded and she kens her onions for sure.
Saw her live in the early 90s. Excellent.
awesome playing and she seems like a really cool person
Jennifer Batten is just a incredible personality and player. Thanks for sharing.... ;0)
