Rig Rundown: Dance Gavin Dance's Will Swan

Will Swan has celebrated and elevated radical guitar music through the course of nine frenetic, volatile @DanceGavinDance albums, a pair of releases with his psychedelic post-hardcore side project Sianvar, and the creation of his @BlueSwanRecords label. The common thread is his hue of beautiful dysfunction and his ethos of pushing the instrument (and its sounds) forward.
Make no mistake, Swan can play the guitar. His style is equal parts violence and grace, with pit stops at all points between. He terrorizes the frets as well as he tenderly dances on them-and the results can be chaotic or calming. But what most excites him about guitar is making it not sound like a guitar.
“I really like those tones that take the guitar far away from its normal sounds,” Swan explains. “I like to layer those with typical guitar tones, and to mix cool sounds with interesting-playing parts. I need both of those elements to enjoy the experience.”
“I’m self-taught, so I don’t know music theory, so when I’m writing I don’t know what things are going to sound like. I’m just messing around and seeing what catches my ear. It’s similar to the way I explore pedals. I don’t quite know what’s going to happen, but if I come across something that I enjoy, I’ll use it and don’t question it.”
The afternoon of Dance Gavin Dance’s headlining show at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works, Swan detailed his signature Kiesels (and the other Kiesel he’s been preferring), explains how the Friedman Small Box is (phenomenally) filling the void of his favored vintage Rockerverb, and breaks down why his pedals help him embrace the textures and tones of other instruments.

Will Swan is modern guitar and songwriting genius who never gets enough credit.
The fact that this man can casually bust out the Chucky lick mid-convo like it's Smoke On The Water is still baffling to me. One of the best players ever without a doubt.

It’s mainly a bunch of pull-offs on an open string which isn’t really hard.
His tone literally sounds the same as the recording. So inspiring
I love how down to earth and low key he is. He loves playing music and gets play what he loves and how he wants to. No crazy theories or philosophy.

Will gave me a marijuana pipe once at a house party/ show. DGD van broke down, my friend caitlin let them stay at her house in highland CA. He Was a cool guy, very chill and down to earth.

Though he's one of my favorites also... That's just wrong haha. They toured with animals as leaders. You can't top tosin abasi. If we're talking talent.. I'm positive tosin could play any dgd song there's ever been written lol. I can't say the same about will swan playing aal songs. He def out talents like 95% of them, but tosin is tosin lol Edit:okay so idk if they actually toured with them, apparently animals as leaders dropped off the tour.. but their was replacement polyphia lmao.. yet another band with an absolutely ridiculous guitarist

Incredibly excited to watch this! Been looking forward to a proper Rig Rundown with him for a LOOOONG time. I know Will usually buys like 4-6 new pedals every album cycle to invent new sounds/tones so I'm curious what makes the cut for a touring pedalboard!

When he got to the part where he’s says that he is self taught and doesn’t understand music theory makes me appreciate Will that much more. That’s exactly how I am and how I write music. What’s weird and strange is that I had a very similar conversation today showing someone my new demos. Guess I’m just gonna not question things and stick to the songs I’ve got working. Thanks for the added inspiration Will

I enjoy the all the rig rundowns, but it’s really special when the guitarists themselves do the rundown and they give demos of the sounds.

Friedmans really are special. I've seen folk rock bands/ pop bands and Will Swan play them and they always sound so crisp but have that vintage feel.
