It all depends how quickly you can reload. I can eject and load another cartridge in pretty quick time - less than 2 seconds - but I've had plenty of practice. Also, the No.1 shoots INCREDIBLY tight groups, giving me confidence in my shots and reducing the need for a follow up.

I wanted a Ruger No. 1 in .405 Winchester for a long time and finally picked one up last year, brand new. The .405 is good enough for anything in North America but I'd want something more if I ever wanted to hunt in Africa, e.g., a .450/400 or a .416 Rigby. They are such a GORGEOUS rifle and all sorts of fun to shoot, even if you're only punching paper.

there was Ruger 1 450/400 NE with about 100rds and reloading dies for sale a couple hours from me for $1800 a while back. If i knew then what i know now i wouldn't have thought twice about getting it. Alas, i was new to this firearms thing and "didnt want to waste money on a single shot rifle." I do have a Ruger No. 3 in 45-70 now that i need to put some lead through.

I don't think that any charge of BP can push that 400-gr bullet down a barrel without some catastrophic failure. If on the other hand you duplicate the original 450/400 Black Powder Express 3 1.1/4," use a 230-300-gr LEAD bullet ahead of about 100-gr of black. Please consult a reloading manual before trying it.

The collar is set in place by the Canadian government to track bears. When one is legally hunted, you take the collar back into the fish and game and they download the data.

I've heard of people who runs their Rugers at about 65,000 and they have apparently had a few problems. Edit: We run the Ruger at 62,000 psi
