So glad you're back, I've really missed the flawless blend of obscure theory, new music recommendations and dry humor this channel provides.

WHEEL has been one of my absolute favorite songs of the year so far. It is so brutal and in your face. The ending layer with the high pitched bell sounds added is just *chefs kiss* brilliant!

Beautiful, happy to see this video. I thoroughly enjoyed this album when it came out, it's amazing how much of this flows seamlessly for as complex as it is. P.S. editing your head onto a frozen still of your body is one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. Love it.

To me, it sort of sounds like what you have labeled as a Go could also be a D#7 to G#m movement (VI7 / ii). And then, what you have labeled as E#o could be a G#m6 to D#9 movement (ii / VI7). The thing is, usually including the secondary dominant VI7 pushes the harmonic 'center of gravity' towards the ii. But here, in its first appearance, we quickly move away into the A#m (iii), and in the second appearance, we never move back to the ii, instead going right from VI7 to I. I feel like this sort of subversion makes it sound as though the music is moving backwards, an unnatural and unsatisfying (not in a bad way!) kind of sound. But because these are kind of unnatural movements for these chord functions, I also think that voice leading plays a bigger role in giving it a sense of momentum, as you point out.

Just curious, have you heard of the band Rototypical? Their (so far only) album The Tactician would be right up your alley, very btbam inspired and extremely dense. Like PII, I feel like someone could do their master's thesis based on this album alone. Would be cool to see you analyse some parts of it

Victory over the Sun need more exposure. They create interesting and palatable music. The new release is killer. I don’t know much about music theory but have always had difficultly when listening to music like this to “find the time signature”. You talking about looking at rhythm/time additively is how I think I follow along to music. Curious to learn a bit more about it! Do you have a list of stuff you’ve been enjoying so far in 2023? I’m always looking for new music and think you’d have a great selection!
