    Good Director = artistic taste + production management sense + knowing how to play within film politics + timing and luck. All of these factors are important and have to work in unison.

    He says film politics in understanding the studio system and the producers and knowing how to manage egos and the like. Making allies and that sort of thing.

    Saul Cifuentes Film Politics is a huge part of being a successful Film director. Directors have to work within the boundaries of Producers and Investors. What you see on the screen is 95% of the time a compromised version of what the Director actually wanted to make. If you can't play that game it doesn't matter how good a director you are.

    Well, yeah. There isn’t some magic tip that will make you able to sneak into a career. There’s too much bullshit around ‘how to get into the industry’ instead of actually being honest about skill, persistence and talent that’s built over time.

    Hey my name is Tierra Richards and I am 16 years old. I have several movie ideas that are so amazing, but I just don’t know what to do with them, I don’t really have too much knowledge about films. These movie ideas are figured out from beginning to end I just don’t have the written script. I was just wondering if you could help me out or even hear me out with everything and decide from there. Thank you so much and have a blessed day.

    Hey. I'm 14 and only a year ago realized I wanted to be a cinematographer/Director when I became an adult . I'm pretty sure taking photography in my Highschool wouldn't hurt, but other than that I don't know what else I can do to help myself achieve my somewhat distant dream. Can someone give me some advice or gudiance on what I should do? Side note: I have an honors English class, and (not to seem...cocky) but I think I have a somewhat decent ability to write and tell a story. For as long as I an remember, in every video related project I've had for school, I've taken the roles of "director " "cinematographer" and editor. Mind that these are short videos for school projects, but nonetheless I think it helps me feel that I may have what it takes in the upcoming future. Does that count for anything? (another side note: PLEASE ignore all of the "content" on this silly little channel of mine, I have another where I post some other terrible content for the singular purpose of pointless pleasure, but this channel is almost 6 years old. I'd appreciate it if you ignored the fact that I made Minecraft/skit videos as a 12 year old.) Thank you.

    taking photography in school will definitely help you out a lot in the field you're trying to get into. that class helps you become familiar w/ different types of cameras, different lenses, even how to develop the film is a great start. sometimes the director IS the cinematographer, so knowing about which cameras does the best job w/ the right set of lenses can really give you an Idea on how to shoot a certain scene, and there's so much more that goes into it, but I recommend starting out small and maybe write some scripts for some short films you'd like to make. that's what I did, and I plan on making more. if you like reading, make sure to pick up "The Filmmaker's Handbook- A Comprehensive guide for the digital age", it's a wonderful book, it teaches you damn near EVERYTHING you need to know, and it's widely revered as the filmmaker's bible. so make some short films, make 1 a week, 52 weeks= 52 short films, and you'll do great.side note: you can do everything by yourself, directing, camera work, acting- but it's hard w/out a crew, so get some friends together. :)

    Why would the state owned not-for-profit BBC care if Scott was helping a commercial TV company? Why would the BBC think of them as competition"? What rotten system we had in the UK.

  • @williampope3503

    @williampope3503

    Not a commercial TV company, commercials as in advertising - commercials would play on other channels but never on the BBC, so it funded the other channels' existence. So by directing commercials, he was essentially helping / being part of the competition.

  • @Uppy21

    He didn't really say anything...So, just get a bunch of random jobs, toil away for a few years, 1:11 do that, and maybe someday, you can get a shot but you know, might not work. Oh, and work for the opposing company to the one you work for! Like, okay, bro. I know you're a respected director who made some big classics but that's your experience not the misleading title of this video. "How To Become a Director." This is "How Riddley Scott Became a Director."

  • @DuskAndHerEmbrace13

    @DuskAndHerEmbrace13

    Uppy21 Yes. There is no answer to the question “How to become a director”, just “How *I* became a director”. Directing is a sort of intangible career - like consultancy - that you can step up to after a more tangible career in a core hard skill, for example professional editing. And you can come up from different avenues, most commonly writing and editing. Therefore there isn’t a tangible career path/blueprint for it. It’s jumping the gun to try and formalise it.
