For anybody wondering about those sprinklers, they are spraying water. It is not de-icing, but to make sure the snow can't be powdery and blow up and stick to the undercarriage of the trains. They were having problem with snow blowing up and sticking, building up, and turning to ice balls and then falling off at speed. They could damage underbody tanks and also smash hard into the ballast causing rocks to shoot out and ricochet around even hitting some train windows and breaking them. Before this, they had to run trains much slower through snow. Otherwise, they plow snow normally. And at some station stops manually inspect under the carriages and manually blast away any stuck snow with wands with high pressure water jets. But those automatic sprinklers are just to change the nature of the snow.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! I was wondering if it might just be water but I also wondered if it might then stick to the train as ice. Not enough to cause problems, I guess! And of course it would have to get really cold for water to freeze in the seconds before it runs off the train :)

I haven't been to Japan yet, but if I compare the train system there, according to your videos, with the German one... What a difference. For me it's ok, if a train is delayed, because it drives slowly - safety first. But as per what I see on this video: The train is still clean inside, light and heater are working and therefore I'd consider it a pretty comfortable travel. The "Deutsche Bahn" is always surprised again every year in winter, that it's actually COLD and that there could be SNOW. 🤣🤣 Watching your videos makes me kinda jealous. I hope, one day I can have similar experiences when I have a chance to travel to Japan. Thanks for sharing and all the best for the New Year from Munich 🍻

i was on the 11:10 Kodama shinkansen from Kyoto -Tokyo last Sunday, Dec 26th. The delays were already in place by that time and although it was bright sunshine in Kyoto I was expecting the snow around Maibara. Sure enough, it was a mini-blizzard at times in Shiga and we were held at Maibara station for a good 10 minutes. The scenes at Maibara are fantastic, I wish I'd jumped out to take some pictures. But I was in the green car with a delicious bento so I stayed put. We made up a little time between Nagoya and Tokyo and were less than 10 minutes late arriving at Tokyo Station. no inconvenience at all, it meant 10 extra minutes in a comfy green car seat. I too loved looking at the snow from a warm shinkansen seat. Japan knows how to run a railway.

I've ridden that line in 2018. It was February, and luckily, there was no snow. It was one of the BEST high speed railway journeys I've had in my life.

In Hikone City 8:25 (Maibara City, Maibara Station), the snowfall is 70 cm, but in a straight line distance At Kyoto Station 9:09, which is less than 50km away, there is no snow. The elevation difference between the two cities is almost none, less than 30m. Nagoya in front of Maibara is also 0 cm In such a narrow range, the climate and temperature will change, and the agricultural products that can be produced will also change, making local special products. This shooting day was a special heavy snowfall day, but if you live in Honshu, Shikoku, or Kyushu, you can swim in the sea in the summer and ski in the winter. Can be enjoyed by traveling less than 150km.

Lovely weather conditions, not ideal for running railways but for short term the snow adds beauty and interest to the day. I do hope to see snow this winter, it used to be a frequent visitor but not so these days, I'm in the south east of England just over 1 hour by train from London. Thanks for sharing and enjoy whilst it lasts!
